Rambach and the Dogmatics of Scholastic Pietism Richard A. Muller Associate Professor of Historical Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary The Pietist movement of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries reacted powerfully against the dogma- tism of late Protestant Orthodoxy. Spener and those who fol- lowed him protested loudly against the dry, rigid formulae of Lutheran scholasticism and against the reduction of religion to the acceptance of a system of carefully defined theological propositions. This is certainly the standard view of the re- lationship between Pietism and Orthodoxy, and it contains, undeniably, an element of truth. ^ Orthodox Protestantism did tend to debate the finest points of doctrine and to assume that deviation from the orthodox position even on secondary issues was tantamount to an attack on fundamental doctrines—and Orthodoxy could, all too often, appear to equate acceptance of a detailed confessional statement with right religion. Against this historical truism, however, several writers have argued the piety of the Orthodox Lutheran theologians and have noted the emphasis of Orthodox Lutheran dogmatics on the Christian life. -

Holmes University of St Andrews ’…the most relevant and beautiful problems in dogmatics begin at the very point where the fable of “unprofitable scholasticism” and the slogan about the “Greek thinking of the Fathers” persuade us we ought to stop.’1 Abstract: It has been commonplace for over a century to argue that the distinctively Lutheran form of the communicatio idiomatum leads naturally to kenotic christology, divine passibility, or both. This argument has been generally accepted as a historical claim; it has also been advanced repeatedly as a criticism of ‘classical theism’ in the literature, and it has featured significantly in almost all recent defences of divine passibility. I argue that it does not work: the Lutheran scholastics had ample resources drawn from nothing more than ecumenical Trinitarian and christological dogma to defend their denial of the genus tapeinoticum. I argue further that this defence, if right, undermines a remarkably wide series of proposals in contemporary systematic theology. Rich brine springs led to the intensive extraction of the salt as early as the late Bronze Age and again in the early Iron Age. After the fall of the Thuringian kingdom Slavonic tribes made their way into the area. Einhard's Chronicle reports that a Frankish army under King Karl, son of Charlemagne, laid out two fortresses: the first mention of the name Halle (806). In the early 10th century Heinrich I had the Giebichenstein fortress enlarged and brought into his extensive system of fortifications. The Giebichenstein March with castle and settlement along with Halle itself with its salt production, to the south, were granted by Otto I to the Monastry of St. Maurice in Magdeburg in 961. In 968 Otto founded the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, which received the rich gift in its turn. The burghers flourished in the second half of the 11th century as a result of their rights of market, coinage, customs and outlawry. The high yield of the brine wells led to the growth of what was for the Middle Ages a major industry. 12th and 13th centuries A defensive wall ringing the town was built with the help of the burghers at the beginning of the 12th century, enlarging the area of the settlement fivefold. -

It was sparked by the 1517 posting of Luther's Ninety-Five Theses. The efforts of the self-described "reformers", who objected to ("protested") the doctrines, rituals, leadership, and ecclesiastical structure of the Roman Catholic Church, led to the creation of new national Protestant churches. The Reformation was precipitated by earlier events within Europe, such as the Black Death and the Western Schism, which eroded people's faith in the Catholic Church and the Papacy that governed it. This, as well as many other factors, such as spread of Renaissance ideas, the spread of the printing press, and the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, contributed to the creation of Protestantism. The Roman Catholic Church responded with a Counter-Reformation initiated by the Council of Trent and spearheaded by the new order of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) specifically organised to counter the Protestant movement. In general, Northern Europe, with the exception of most of Ireland, turned Protestant. -

This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: “Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as 1 often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” I. During the past couple decades, questions about the frequency of Holy Communion have been raised quite often in conservative Lutheran circles. 2 One example is in the “Lord’s Supper” issue of the Good News journal, where we read in the “Questions & Answers that Clarify” column: Question : How often should one attend the Lord’s Supper? Answer : At the time of the Reformation, the Lutherans continued the universal practice of the Church since Biblical times of celebrating the Sacrament at least every Sunday and holy day. (AC XXIV 34) 3 The Good News editors draw our attention to Augsburg Confession XXIV:34. This passage, and the two sections that come after it (35 and 36), read as follows: Now since the Mass is not a sacrifice for others, living or dead, to take away their sins but should be a Communion where the priest and others receive the sacrament for themselves, we celebrate it in this fashion. -
