The business applications, like online shopping, advertisement, web designing, search engine optimization, of eye movement studies in real world scenarios have started to dominate as well. Tracking of eye movements can communicate the underlying mechanism of visual perception and dynamics of humans’ cognition that are of prime concerns for a number of social, economic, and scientific purposes. In this study, we conducted a series of eye tracking experiments to verify our hypothesis that during human eye movements, the visual focus of attention dynamically associated relevant constituents of artistic portrait. We collected the eye movement data of participants who regarded artistic portraits during active viewing. The trails produced from eye tracking system during portrait viewing traced connected focuses of attention in eye movements based on relevancy in visual contexts. These experimental facts validated the hypothesis that visual focus of attention actively associated relevancy in eye movements. Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh. -

Observing or Using Van Gogh’s Bedroom: New Approach to Attracting the Art Audience Dr. Dejana PRNJAT* ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to examine a successful example of using arts in creating promotio- nal campaign that expands the concept of museum experience. It is a campaign conducted by the Art Institute of Chicago, in order to introduce the wide public to the coming exhibition which, for the first time in North America, exhibited all three versions of van Gogh’s painting The Bedroom. The institute, advised by the leading marketing agency, created and advertised for rent a room identical to the one van Gogh painted. The results of this paper confirm that it is to use an uncon- ventional promotional approach in order to attract the attention of the general public to an art event. The basic method in this work is the case study method, and also it is used content analysis as empirical method of data collection. Key Words: Van Gogh painting The Bedroom, the Art Institute of Chicago, art audience, promoti- on, INTRODUCTION We are exposed to a large number of promotional messages every day, and it is hard for an average person to notice and remember a specific one, therefore the advertising professionals make every effort to attract attention of its target audience in alternative ways. Events of high art, which generally do not have a large audience, are particularly at risk, and as a rule they are promoted by information about time, place and participants in the event coupled with a brief description. -

The artist is also consistent in referring to himself as “Vincent” as he signed all of his works “Vincent” rather than “van Gogh”. Similarly, in the personal correspondence with his brother Theo, he signs “Vincent.” This decision will also help the flow of the thesis as it avoids confusion in reference to other members of the van Gogh family. -

In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. However, he was not commercially successful and his suicide at 37 followed years of mental illness and poverty. Born into an upper-middle-class family, Van Gogh drew as a child and was serious, quiet and thoughtful. As a young man he worked as an art dealer, often travelling, but became depressed after he was transferred to London. -

At last I have a landscape with olive trees, and also a new study of a starry sky. Through the iron-barred window I can make out a square of wheat in an enclosure, a perspective in the manner of Van Goyen, above which in the morning I see the sun rise in its glory. One is the countryside that I glimpse from the window of my bedroom. In the foreground, a field of wheat, ravaged and knocked to the ground after a storm. A boundary wall and beyond, grey foliage of a few olive trees, huts and hills. Finally, at the top of the painting, a large white and grey cloud swamped by the azure. Then yet another that depicts a field of yellowing wheat surrounded by brambles and green bushes. At the end of the field a little pink house with a tall and dark cypress tree that stands out against the distant purplish and bluish hills, and against a forget-me-not blue sky streaked with pink whose pure tones contrast with the already heavy, scorched ears, whose tones are as warm as the crust of a loaf of bread.
