On Golden Pond is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory—but still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger, and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together. They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiancé, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the "grandchild" the elderly couple have longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness—and slang—in return. In the end, as the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by the incidence of a mild heart attack. Time, they know, is now against them, but the years have been good and, perhaps, another summer on Golden Pond still awaits. PAGE 5 APRIL 2019 The Sacred Three Days (Triduum)

“One ongoing day of prayer” The Triduum (Latin for “three days”) is comprises the three-day period of prayer leading to the Easter feast, the fulfillment of the whole liturgical year. The Triduum is a symbol and sensory rich event, helping us to accompany Christ to his death and celebrate his return from the dead. Fire, water, and incense take us beyond our intellect in to the ancient and beautiful roots of our faith. Holy Thursday The first day of the Triduum begins on Holy Thursday (also called Maundy Thursday), as the Church celebrates the Lord’s Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. The word “Maundy” stems from the Latin word mandatum, meaning “commandment,” and refers to the new commandment of love that Jesus gave his disciples that night. It commemorates the institution of Eucharist and the priesthood. You may notice that the Gloria is sung during the Liturgy, after being silent throughout Lent. Bells are rung throughout its entire recitation to give honor for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Holy Eucharist and the Holy Priesthood. All are encouraged to bring bells from home to join in this joyful tradition! (Even a jingle of a set of keys will do the trick). At the conclusion of the Gloria on Maundy Thursday, the bells will no longer be rung until the Easter Vigil Gloria; this somber note reminds us of the fact that after the Last Supper, our beloved Jesus was “betrayed into the hands of sinners,” as He Himself had predicted. And since His betrayal was made by the treacherous kiss of Judas, the kiss of peace is omitted to remind us of the insult offered Our Lord by one of His Own chosen Apostles. Another tradition on Holy Thursday is to gather a collection for the poor. This action has been driven all throughout Lent by a desire to grow in Christian discipleship. During the presentation of the gifts of bread and wine, everyone will be welcomed forward to the front of the altar to place their offering for the poor in a basket. Therefore, come prepared with a monetary gift (your Rice Bowl) or non- perishable item as your offering. After the liturgy, the Blessed Sacrament is transferred to an altar outside of the Church and kept in the tabernacle of repose. All are encouraged to sit awhile in adoration. Spend some quiet time with the Lord as the building will remain open until 10 PM. Good Friday The second day of the Triduum is filled with the silence of the tomb. Good Friday is the only day of the year on which Mass is not celebrated. The altar is bare, and the liturgy consists of proclaiming the Passion of Christ from the Gospel of John and the veneration of the Cross. As you come forward to venerate the Cross, not only does this serve as a sign of reverence, but also as a rite of commitment to “take up your cross”. Easter Vigil The third day of the Triduum is filled with the wonder of the resurrection. The Easter Vigil is the highest point of the liturgical year. This service reenacts the passage from death into life. On this night, we keep watch with the church, a fire is lighted, Scriptures are read that tell the story of salvation, the elect receive the Easter sacraments and all present renew their own baptismal promises. The liturgy begins in darkness. The drama of the lighting of the new fire, the blessing of the Paschal candle, and the Easter proclamation in the candlelit church set the stage for the recounting of the story of salvation in the Scripture readings. Then the altar candles are lighted from the paschal candle and, in a blaze of light and triumphant music, the first Easter Eucharist begins. Our risen Lord comes, in word and sacrament, into the darkness of our lives with the light of his risen life. Following the Liturgy of the Word, catechumens (those who have never been baptized) and candidates (those who have been baptized in a non-Catholic Christian denomination) are initiated into the Church by baptism and/or confirmation. The congregation, too, joins in the renewal of baptismal promises. Thus, is recalled the time when we “died and were buried with Christ” and were raised with him to newness of life. The Easter Vigil concludes with the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the reception of Holy Communion. Easter Sunday marks the end of the Triduum and is the first day of the Easter Octave. The celebration of the Triduum concludes after Vespers and the great fifty days begin. Forty days of fasting yield to fifty days of feast!
