his month we have two events of a contrasting nature! The first event, featuring organist Paul Jacobs, will be the continuation of the organ recital series which we are co-sponsoring at The Kimmel Center. Paul has strong Philadelphia connections, having studied here for five years at The Curtis Institute of Music. This is a wonderful way to welcome him back and to feature one of "our own." Tickets are $28, but a reduced rate is available to our members for $23T by contacting Judy Bell at [email protected] or 215-860-6664. A dinner will be held after the recital at The Franklin Inn Club located at 205 South Camac Street. The cost is $30 per person (a real deal!!) and includes hors d'oeuvres, dinner and dessert. Those who were present for dinner after Cherry Rhodes' recital will remember what a great time we all had and what a wonderful meal Continued on page 4 CRESCENDO, the official bulletin of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Guild CRESCENDO of Organists, is published monthly, September through FEBRUARY 2007 VOLUME LXIX, NO. 6 June. All material for publication must reach the Editor 2 by the 1st day of the month preceding the date of issue, DEAN’S LETTER i.e. November 1 for the December issue. This must be type written and e-mailed (text supplied in an Happy belated 2007, even as you’re looking forward (maybe) to attachment), or mailed. A hard copy should be included Valentine’s Day, another Hallmark moment. On to the business at hand… for display ads. Submissions become the property of the Philadelphia Chapter of the AGO and will not be returned Congrats to Katherine Reier on another astounding January JumpStart! unless accompanied by a self-addressed and stamped Thanks also to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and Jeff Brillhart for envelope. CRESCENDO reserves the right to make hosting the event. The great availability of space and two marvelous editorial changes and to shorten articles to fit space organs makes Bryn Mawr an ideal location for the JumpStart. The Jeff Fowler limitations. Articles in Crescendo reflect the views of the Philadelphia Chapter has a history with BMPC, and it’s wonderful to writers and not necessarily those of the Guild. All continue it. Now onward to an even bigger and better JJ in 2008! advertising must be arranged through the Advertising Manager. Organist Paul Jacobs is the featured event for February with his recital in the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall on the Saturday the 10th at 3:00pm. I will be sending you an email Advertising Rates early on which I encourage you to send on to those on your own email list, such as choir members, family, Camera-ready: One-Time Season and friends. It would be great to pack the house for this! Paul, a legend in the making, is not to be 1/8 page: $40 $285 missed by anyone with half an interest in the Art of the Organ! A dinner at the Franklin Inn Club follows 1/4 page: $70 $530 the concert. See the details in the cover article to make dinner reservations and to secure the best seats at 1/2 page: $85 $630 full page: $140 a reduced rate. The chapter is also making tickets available to students at an even lower price. Our plan Professional card: N/A $60 is to make this concert available to every young organist who is interested. (members only; no phone numbers) Then, just for the social heck of it, there’s a Mardi Gras party at Roy Harker’s place in West Philly on Composition/Design, add $95 per ad Monday, February 19 at 7:00. Details about this may again be found in the cover article. An abbreviated Executive Committee Meeting will be squeezed into the schedule at Roy’s too. If you are a new to the Editorial Board chapter, you are especially invited to join us, but even if you’ve been around for sometime, come to the Carl Gedeik, Editor, CRESCENDO party. Sometimes I get the feeling that some of you are too shy to join us. We really are a friendly group! 215-247-6827 If you can’t make it by seven, come when you can. email: [email protected] I have been associated with the Philadelphia Chapter since about 1974 (with a hiatus in the 80’s in Ann Roy Harker, Publisher Arbor). It’s been said that some consider the Philadelphia Chapter aloof and unfriendly while others may 4514 Chester Ave, Philadelphia PA 19143-3707 actually be intimidated by the group. Balderdash! I have never met a more likeable and sociable group 215-222-3831 of people! We share the same interests and concerns. We speak the same language and appreciate the email: [email protected] same things. Yes - it is true that the chapter is made up of people of extremely differing levels of skill and interest, but if you didn’t know, you would be very hard pressed to guess who is who. Our members are Katherine Reier, Circulation Coordinator all genuinely real and kind to the person! The Philadelphia Chapter is an incredibly nurturing and caring 215-517-4160 group, and those of us on the inside know this for a fact and enjoy it! email: [email protected] That’s the message of this month’s letter: the genuine humanity of our Chapter. For some of us, our Calendar of Events mission is a lifelong passion and a full-time commitment. For others, it may be an avocation, a hobby, or Timothy M. Evers, Coordinator just as a fan of the organ. But put everyone in the same room, and we get along famously together! So 215-348-4004, x117 don’t just sit at home watching the tube on the 19th!
