Bass, three-time GRAMMY® nominated singer and conductor, is Director of Choral Studies at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA and Associate Conductor & Director of Education of Seraphic Fire . He was previously on faculty at Western Michigan University and the University of South Florida in Tampa, where he served as Artistic Director of Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, the official chorus of the Florida Orchestra . Bass received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Miami-Florida, where he was a doctoral fellow, and received his Master of Music and Bachelor of Science from the University of South Florida . He is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy . Bass was selected by the master conductor of Amsterdam Baroque Soloists, Ton Koopman, to be one of only 20 singers for a presentation of Cantatas by J . S . Bach in Carnegie Hall, and was an auditioned member of Robert Shaw’s workshop choir at Carnegie . Bass was appointed choirmaster for the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria . In its inaugural year of recording, Seraphic Fire and PCI received the GRAMMY® nomination for Best Choral Performance for their recording of Johannes Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem . During his tenure as Artistic Director for Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, he was responsible for five recordings and three world premieres . At UM he taught experiential music courses, manages directing, marketing, and recording services for the choral studies area; and served as the senior teaching assistant to Director of Choral Studies Karen Kennedy . Nielsen holds a Master of Music from East Carolina University with concentrations in Choral Conducting and Voice Performance and Pedagogy, and a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Virginia University with concentrations in Voice Performance and Theater . Nielsen also collaborates in a variety of capacities with some of the country’s leading vocal ensembles . Currently, he is Seraphic Fire's conducting apprentice as part of the ensemble's partnership with University of Miami's Frost School of Music . He also serves as Artistic Coordinator with Santa Fe Desert Chorale where he works directly with Artistic Director Joshua Habermann in coordinating all artistic operations as well as supervising the artistic wing of the community outreach program . While attending the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey, Mr. Melendez performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center in New York City with renowned musical figures such as Dr. James Litton, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, Yo-Yo Ma, Andre Previn, Wynton Marsalis, and Kurt Masur. As a conductor, educator, and sacred musician, Mr. Melendez has led choirs, taught seminars, and has been a guest artist for churches and music programs throughout the country. At only fifteen years of age, he was named the music director of the San Angelo Singing Boys of San Angelo, Texas. Two years later, he was named music director of St. Mark Presbyterian Church, San Angelo. He has founded several choral programs throughout the country as well as a Vocal Music Institute designed to provide young, dedicated singers an advanced level program in which they can progress in their efforts to becoming musical scholars. He has been music director of churches throughout Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. As director of music ministries of First United Methodist Church in San Angelo, TX he led the Sanctuary Choir on a tour to New York City, performing in Carnegie Hall with world renowned composer/conductor John Rutter.

Prvi festival održan je 1971. godine. Od tada se u mnoštvu dvoraca i crkava krajem rujna i početkom listopada, razliježe barokna glazba hrvatskih i svjetskih glazbenika i ansambala. Od 1992. taj je državni festival pod pokroviteljstvom predsjednika države, a organizira ga Koncertni ured Varaždin. Die Varaždiner Barockabende wurden 1968 ins Leben gerufen und basieren auf einer reichhaltigen Tradition der in Varaždin gepflegten Barockmusik. Das erste Festival fand 1971 statt. In mehreren Schlössern und Kirchen erklingt seither alljährlich Ende September und Anfang Oktober in dieser Gegend die Barockmusik, interpretiert von namhaften SolistInnen und Ensembles aus Kroatien und aus der ganzen Welt. Ab 1992 genießt dieses staatlich geförderte Festival die Schirmherrschaft des kroatischen Staatsoberhauptes. Organisatorisch wird das Festival vom Konzertbüro Varaždin betreut. Varaždin Baroque Evenings were founded in 1968 on the rich tradition of Varaždin Baroque music. The first festival was held in 1971. Since then, in late September and early October, the music of Croatian and international musicians and ensembles has been heard in many castles and churches. In addition to this overall survey of research at the institution, perspectives are provided on the performance of individual faculties and departments. Further statistical perspectives on research output and the nature of research activities are presented in other publications of the Division of Research Development, i.e. Research @ Stellenbosch; and Perspectives of Stellenbosch University. As in the past, a variety of persons and organizations contributed to the University's research programme. Stellenbosch University wishes to express particular recognition to the statutory research councils and commissions, government departments, private enterprises, foundations and individuals for their continued support of our research. As far as research funding is concerned, researchers at South African universities are increasingly dependent upon new sources for research funding. This includes national and international opportunities alike. Stellenbosch University therefore attaches great value to regional cooperation and substantive scientific agreements with other universities local and abroad, and to bilateral research and development agreements between South Africa and other countries. Apart from the active support of research by the University's management, a variety of internal support services provide assistance to researchers. These include the library and information services, capacity building workshops, information technology, infrastructure, the maintenance of laboratories and equipment, central analytical services, and support from the administrative and financial divisions, without which it would be impossible to conduct research of this calibre. We acknowledge with appreciation the dedication and excellent contributions made by Stellenbosch University staff members to the institution's research output.
