AUTHOR'S NOTE

In putting a dramatic conception of Abraham Lincoln before his own American people, I may perhaps be allowed to offer one or two observations. Of the merits or lack of them in the play as a drama, it is clearly not for me to speak. But I should like

Ed Wynn "The Perfect Fool"

Coming in New Musicale

Those of the good o',d general public who feel their existence on this terrestrial sphere is too devoid of hilarity can take heart, for it is announced that A. L. Erlanger in association with B. C. Whit- ney will present Ed Wynn, ''The Perfect Pool," in a new musical delight at the American Theatre, Sunday, November 12th, for a limited engagement. The new production will be distinctively Ld Wynn from beginning to end, for the ^. star not only wrote the lyrics and music, he also thought up the jokes, picked For[^or AdvertisingSpace pace out the performers, and arranged the order of the scenes, of which there wi1 Call be nineteen, divided into Olive 5535 And then, by way of fair measure, Wynn himself will contribute a lot of new stunts entirely different from those F YOU ARE lie has done in the past and, in addition, for the first time in his histrionic career I thinking of in- he will sing and exhibit his skill as an acrobatic dancer. This latter stunt, vesting money, incidentally, is a side line which the comedian long has been holding out, for let us give you it is a talent that very few of his inti- mate friends even have suspected he pos- the benefit of our sessed. Wynn did not paint the scenery exactly; but he did tell the artists just knowledge and what he wanted and he turned over the direction of the dance numbers to Julian experience. Mitchell. Antonio Bafunno will again wield the baton for "The Perfect Fool," and an augmented orchestr'a. Besides Ed Wynn, the principals in- elude Janet Velie, Flo Newton, True Rice, Johnny Dale, Jay Velie, Cass Burt and "That Girl" Quartette, which comprises Harriette Keyes. Loretta Ferrati, Ivey Kirkwood and Jeanette Fielding. The Meyakos—Clever Japanese trio—seen here with the Ed Wynn "Carnival," are in- troduced effectively in new surprises, and the principal dancers will be Estelle Pen- ning and Anita, Furman, with Belle Gan- non, Marjorie Grant, Edna Hamel, Peggy Ellis, Brooks. it to be remembered that it is not the dramatist's business to com- pete either with the historian or the biographer. The story of the American Civil War and of Lincoln's personal career have been told exhaustively and exactly. My purpose has been to select from these in such a way as to give, it may be heightened signifi- cance to a certain strain in Lincoln's character and to ascertain movements and tendencies in the human mind that lie led and directed. I have not attempted to state everything, but to state something with imaginative lucidity. So that for this artistic pur- pose (and by the example of the greatest dramatists), I have adapted the events of history to my needs; feeling justified in shaping literal fact to the service of essential truth as 1 saw it, or in the invention of a fictitious character, such as Burnett Hook.

Precise records are preserved in many volumes; any hope has been to add a little to the spiritual interpretation of these. In the same way, it is clear to me that a writer does most honor to his subject in writing as well as he can of it. And he can only write as well as he can by using an idiom to which he has been bred. In the very few instances, therefore, where a phrase in the play falls unfamiliarly to American cars, I should like to suggest that it is not charged against Shakespeare, for example, that lie slid not write Caesar in Roman speech. In the present instance, however, the differences are so trifling that they are hardly likely to be noticed. For the rest, I can but wish that the play might serve, beyond its chief function of interesting an audience in a theatre, to help American people to realize the fun- damental meaning that their greatest figure has to an h;nglish mind,
