FROM 1903 TO ABOUT 1933 The following list of the first sail yachts in the Club cannot be said to be complete, nevertheless it provides a record of the better known vessels and was compiled from newspaper files of The Province, News-Advertiser, The World and The Sun during the first three decades of the Club activities. Vancouver newspapers gave very complete coverage of sailing events in that period when yacht racing commanded wide public interest. ABEGWEIT—32 ft. aux. Columbia River centerboard cruising sloop built at Steveston in 1912 for H. C. Shaw, who joined the Club in 1911. ADANAC-18 ft. sloop designed and built by Horace Stone in 1910. Bristow, Chair “The Fabian Child: English and American Literature and Socialist Reform, 1884-1915” intervenes in current scholarship that addresses the impact of Fabian socialism on the arts during the fin de siècle. I argue that three particular Fabian writers—Evelyn Sharp, E. Nesbit, and Jean Webster—had an indelible impact on children’s literature, directing the genre toward less morally didactic and more politically engaged discourse. Previous studies of the Fabian Society have focused on George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, and Beatrice Webb and Sidney Webb to the exclusion of women authors producing fiction for child readers. After the Fabian Society’s founding in 1884, English writers Sharp and Nesbit, and American author Webster published prolifically and, in their work, direct their socialism toward a critical and deliberate reform of ii literary genres, including the fairy tale, the detective story, the boarding school novel, adventure yarns, and epistolary fiction.

    Historical Evaluation of the Tugboat Enchantress (45SK369) Anacortes, Washington Submitted to Port of Anacortes, Washington Submitted by Gretchen Kaehler and Gail Thompson, Ph.D. Seattle, Washington June 2008 Executive Summary The Port of Anacortes contracted with Historical Research Associates, Inc. (HRA), to conduct an evaluation of the tugboat Enchantress (45SK369) for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Enchantress is a derelict Miki-class tugboat that has been abandoned on state-owned aquatic land since 2000. The Washington State Department of Ecology considers the Enchantress a risk to public and environmental safety. The tugboat is constructed of and/or contains hazardous materials such as lead, hydraulic oil, tin, and mercury, among other substances. These materials may be leaching into the waters of Fidalgo Bay currently or may be released if the tug continues to deteriorate and/or if it breaks apart during a storm. The vessel is over 50 years old and the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) requested that the tugboat be evaluated before removal. HRA's evaluation consisted of archival and literature review, oral interviews, and a field visit that included the involvement of maritime architect Jim Cole, to assess the physical integrity of the Enchantress. The history of the vessel was obtained through archival research and oral interviews with people who had either worked on or skippered the ship as well as others who had knowledge about Miki tugboat construction and usage. NRHP nomination forms as well as Washington Heritage Register (WHR) nomination forms for other vessels from similar construction periods were also examined to determine what types of appliances or historical records were necessary for integrity and subsequent eligibility.

Hereford Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Susan Casteras Art History This dissertation examines representations in art of the Victorian woman in “altered states.” Though characterized in Victorian art in a number of ways, women are most commonly stereotyped as physically listless and mentally vacuous. The images examined show the Victorian female in a languid and at times reclining or supine pose in these representations. In addition, her demeanor implies both emotional and physical depletion, and there is both a pronounced abandonment of the physical and a collapsing effect, as if all mental faculties are withdrawing inward. Each chapter is dedicated to examining one of these distinct but interrelated types of femininity that flourished throughout British and American art from c. 1850 to c. 1910. The chapters for this dissertation are organized sequentially to demonstrate a selected progression of various states of consciousness, from the most obvious (the sleeping woman) to iii the more nuanced (the female Aesthete and the female medium). In each chapter, there is the visual perception of the Victorian woman as having access to otherworldly conditions of one form or another.
