Welcome to Country - Lexodius Dadd

Macquarie University is situated on the land of the Wattamatigal people who form part of the Darug Nation. We pay respects to our Elders both Past and Present and to honour our Ancestors for without them we wouldn’t be here today. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you, what a welcome to country means. There are over 250 Aboriginal countries and more than 500 language groups within Australia. Boundaries were respected you didn’t have the right to just walk onto or pass through country unless you were welcomed. Traditionally a Welcome was to allow safe passage for visitors to pass through unhindered, in order to hunt and gather food or to meet for business to discuss important matters. Visitors would light a fire and wait for the traditional owners to come and ask of your business thus the welcome to country. Most times a corrobee or celebration was part of the welcome. Learning is a vital to the continuation of our cultures. Macquarie University carries on this tradition. Aboriginal people have shared knowledge in the telling of stories, in their art and dance. We have kept our cultures alive through the passing on of knowledges. As students of Macquarie University, you will continue in this tradition. Your journey will be difficult but with the support of family, friends you will succeed. I hope you will come to view the staff of Warawara as your extended family as I have. Today our land looks much different to what it used to prior to colonisation, though this does not mean it has less significance for our people today. The land is still our Mother and we show her much respect. She gives us everything that we need so while you walk on this land think of the old people and show respect to one another through humility, patience and trust. I am hopeful that you will continue learning these lessons as you move through your degree. I would finally like to take this opportunity to wish you the very best in your studies. Worremi, Welcome to Darug land didgergaw.

Kind regards, Lexodious Dadd Senior Darug Community Representative

Elder Welcome

Firstly I would like to acknowledge the Wattamatigal people and Darug Nation, pay my respects to the Ancestors of that Nation, their descendants and Elders past and present. I feel very privileged to work at Macquarie University and to have a close and respectful relationship with the Darug people and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff who work here. As Elder in Residence I would also like to welcome you to Macquarie University and encourage you to utilize the facilities that are available at Warawara. The first year at university can be daunting and present a number of new challenges both personal and academic, the sharing of those concerns and challenges can often be the difference between failure and success. Warawara can and does provide that safe environment for you to do just that. The Student Support staff are available to help and assist you to make that transition into University life as easy and pain free as possible. We do understand how it feels to be a first year student, we have been there and done that, some of us are still studying and working towards degrees, both undergraduate and post graduate. The Academic staff are very approachable, but very busy, so if you have a concern or issue that you feel can only be resolved by speaking to one of them, remember to make an appointment either through Kylie or email directly to the Academic you wish to speak with. Like everything in life, university is all about balance and choice, balancing your study and workloads with social and family commitments and making the sensible choice regarding time, not always the easiest thing to do. When you have settled into a routine that suits you I would suggest you explore all the social events, team sports and student groups that are available here at Macquarie University and become involved in the areas that interest you. This is another way of meeting new people, fellow students and provides an avenue for sharing of ideas and fears. Finally, when university, study, personal life and its trials get you down and you feel like it is all ‘too much’, remember what you want to achieve in your life and why you chose to come to university. Remember also that there are people here at Warawara who are able to help you get through those times, we are here to help, listen and present options to you as well as celebrate your achievements and enjoy getting to know you. So come on up and say ‘HI’ to the Team and make it your home-away-from- home whilst you work hard to obtain your dreams.

Regards and Respect, Aunty Elaine Chapman Elder in Residence

I have just completed my first year of an Undergraduate Bachelor’s degree in Ancient History. At the moment I am not quite sure where I would like this degree to take me but I absolutely love study, which I believe is the main picture. I have built amazing friendships with both staff and students at Warawara and I couldn’t imagine what I would do without mid-study breaks for a yarn in the common room. Without a doubt I can say the friends I have made will stay with me forever. I couldn't have made it through my first year without tutors through ITAS which the staff at Warawara helped to set up.
