Hernández also founded Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles® – America’s first all-female Mariachi ensemble. In 1991, he started a children’s music foundation called the Mariachi Heritage Society. Hernández feels that maintaining the spirit of culture is as important as giving children the tools to succeed in any endeavor. More than awards and credits, it is the passion and love of the Mariachi tradition that is at the heart of Hernández’s efforts and music. Although he has played for heads of state, it is not surprising to see him perform at the famous Cielito Lindo Mariachi restaurant. Arranging and writing Mariachi music is a legacy that Hernández respects and loves. “I am a fifth-generation Mariachi musician,” said Hernández. “My father came here in the 1940s when there was only one place in Los Angeles that had Mariachi music and the band had to pay the restaurant owner 25 cents per song to make up for the lost jukebox quarter. But my father always said that the day Mariachi music is work is the day you die.” Founded in 1994, MARIACHI REYNA DE LOS ANGELES® captivates audiences with a vivacious spirit. Enriching the Mariachi forum as America’s first all-female Mariachi ensemble, the group brings sensitivity, beauty, warmth, and an attractive perspective to the realm of Mexico’s musical heritage. The documentary Compañeras, which aired on PBS and KCET, profiles America’s first all-female Mariachi group in a cultural and musical tradition that has traditionally been male-dominated. Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles® has recorded two successful albums – Solo Tuya (Yours Only) and El Mejor Mariachi Femenino del Mundo (The Best Female Mariachi in the World) – produced by Hernández. The ensemble’s latest album, Compañeras, is a collection of traditional Mexican songs. The dance troupe BALLET FOLKLORICO DEL PACIFICO brings to life the legends, myths, traditions, and richness that define Mexico. In a spirited showcase of lively tunes, colorful costumes, and exuberant dances, the ensemble takes the audience on a whirlwind musical and visual tour of Mexico. With intensive training in Classical Ballet, Modern dance, and Mexican Folk dance, performers combine the three genres to create a dynamic and theatrical style of move- ment that consistently captivates. n

18 ENTER THE REALM OF THE DRAGON

Imagine a wall dividing the West from the East. The mystery of that which lies beyond inspires a strangely exciting curiosity. As the fog parts, a single opening, round as the full moon, appears in the barrier. A lone figure stands silhouetted in the portal. An obstruction? An invasion? Or, rather, perhaps an invitation? Yes, that’s it. His lighted staff becomes a beacon, welcoming us to another world, another point of view. With slight apprehension and yet great anticipation, we enter the Moon Gate. The rich culture and traditions of the Chinese people have inspired every aspect of this production. Mostly, however, it is inspired by the performers. In basic form, the acrobatic acts and martial arts were created centuries ago and have been improved and perfected over time. We set out to complement these traditional visuals with a contemporary style of stage direction, at once preserving the time-honored traditions inherent in the material and also making the material accessible to audiences spanning diverse cultural and generational perspectives. ~ The Producers Biographies THE SHAOLIN DISCIPLES hail from Henen, THE IMPERIAL ACROBATS OF CHINA hails China, home of the world-famous Shaolin Temple, and from the Beijing Acrobatic Troupe, which is located near Shandong, China, known as the birthplace of all Chinese the ancient Imperial palace known as the Forbidden City. martial arts.
