For this purpose total 60 representative soil samples were collected from 30 villages and two soil samples from each village of Washi tahsil were collected according to their representative depths. From each village 2 soil samples Vertisols (>30 cm) were collected. In physical analysis Bulk density, Particle density, Porosity were studied. Average bulk density, particle density and porosity was ranges from 1.24 to 1.95 Mg m-3, 2.00 to 2.96 Mg m-3 and 13 to 55 per cent respectively. In chemical analysis viz., pH, EC, organic carbon, free calcium carbonate, macronutrient and micronutrient were analyzed. Available N, P and available K were varied from 62.50 to 619.00 kg ha-1, 5.30 to 44.80 kg ha-1and 142.20 to 944.60 kg ha-1. Exchangeable Ca++ and exchangeable Mg++ content ranged from 20 to 53 cmol (P+) kg-1 and 2 to 28 cmol (P+) kg-1, respectively and available S ranged from 2.99 to 67.94 mg kg-1.

  • Land Conflicts and Attacks on Dalits: a Case Study from a Village in Marathwada, India R
FIELD REPORT Land Conflicts and Attacks on Dalits: A Case Study from a Village in Marathwada, India R. Ramakumar* and Tushar Kamble† The right to own property is systematically denied to Dalits. Landlessness – encompassing a lack of access to land, inability to own land, and forced evictions – constitutes a crucial element in the subordination of Dalits. When Dalits do acquire land, elements of the right to own property – including the right to access and enjoy it – are routinely infringed (Centre for Human Rights and Global Justice 2007). In 1996, a nongovernmental organization undertook a door-to-door survey of 250 villages in the state of Gujarat and found that, in almost all villages, those who had title to land had no possession, and those who had possession had not had their land measured or faced illegal encroachments from upper castes (Human Rights Watch 1999). …the distinction and discrimination based on caste still prevails in Maharashtra. A slight provocation like a dispute at the water pump leads to polarization as Dalits and non-Dalits; non-Dalits attack Dalitbastis , destroy their houses and even kill them…The Dalits are not supposed to assert their rights and equality before the law. If they do, they have to pay a price (PUCL 2003). Landlessness is a pervasive feature of Dalit households in rural India. Landlessness is foundational to the existence of Dalits as a distinct social group in the rural areas; it forms the material basis for the domination and exploitation of Dalits in the non-economic spheres as well. The caste system thus contains elements of both social oppression and class exploitation.

  • Department of Atomic Energy
DEPARTMENT OF ATOMIC ENERGY The vision of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is to empower India through application of nuclear science and technology, and to provide better quality of life to its citizens. During the period from May, 2014 till December 31, 2014, the programmes of the Department achieved impressive growth in various segments and domains. These are described below. In Nuclear Power generation,Unit 1 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project-1 (KKNPP-1) of 1000 MWe commenced commercial operation on December 31, 2014. With this, the total number of operating power reactors is 20 with an installed capacity of 5680MWe. The second Unit, KKNPP – 2 is also in advanced stage of commissioning. During the calendar year 2014 the highest ever generation of 37146 MUs was recorded which is 10% higher than last year's generation. The Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS)-5 recorded a continuous run of 765 days which is the best in Asia and the second best in the world. Consent of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) was obtained in October 2014 to establish the Gorakhpur AnuVidyutPariyojanaHarayana (GHAVP) Units-1&2 (2x700 MWe PHWRs). In the area of uranium exploration, over 16,535 tonnes of additional Uranium Oxide (U3O8) reserves have been established in Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya and Jharkhand during the year thus taking the country's uranium resources to over 2, 14,158 tonnes of U3O8. The Tummalapalle uranium project is readying for commissioning in 2015-16. The mine has achieved the desired ore production capacity and adequate ore has been stockpiled.
