Candidate Information Brochure Candidate Information Brochure Interim Estates Manager About Sedbergh School The School Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, Provost of Eton, is an Independent Co-educational Boarding School. The Headmaster is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference. Set in the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park, the School also benefits from fast motorway and rail access to the rest of the UK. The School is a vibrant, demanding and supportive community which encourages pupils and staff to be involved in as broad a range of activities and interests as possible. Art, Drama and Music are especially strong, and the School has a national reputation for Sport. Sedbergh has its own Prep School located approximately five miles away at Casterton. The Principal, Mr A A P Fleck BSc, MA, acts as the “Chief Executive” of both Schools and is supported by a number of senior managers. Mr D J Harrison MA (Cantab) is the Headmaster of Sedbergh Senior School. Mr W R Newman MA is Headmaster of Sedbergh Prep School. The Chief Operating Officer, Peter Marshall, is responsible to the Headmaster and Governors for the management of all the administration and support staff. The COO has responsibility not only for the finances of the School, but also for the extensive land and buildings, maintenance department, grounds & gardens, catering, housekeeping & domestic staff and all other support staff, as well as running the commercial trading arm of the School, Sedbergh School Developments Limited. The Position Sedbergh School is seeking to appoint an Interim Estates Manager for a minimum of 3 months to cover a period of absence of the current incumbent. Reporting to and working with the Bursar (Operations), the successful candidate is expected to have experience of property and grounds management and maintenance. Excellent interpersonal, IT and administrative skills are essential as the post holder is expected to ensure that the school is compliant with standards in relation to estates and buildings and relevant Health & Safety legislation. Safeguarding Safeguarding of Children Safeguarding the welfare of children is of the highest priority to Sedbergh School. Every employee of the school has a responsibility to: Protect Children from abuse; Be aware of the School’s safeguarding procedures; Know how to access and implement the required procedures; Keep a sufficient record of any significant complaint, conversation or event; Report any matters of concern to the Designated Safeguarding Lead; Attend annual in-service training provided by the School. Duties & Responsibilities The Interim Estates Manager is responsible for the daily maintenance of the Senior and Prep School’s property, grounds and assets, together with all the mechanical, heating, ventilation and electrical plant therein. They will provide support, direction and guidance to personnel in these areas. Key aspects of the post are: To provide support and direction to the Clerk of Works and Head Groundsman in the day to day management of the grounds and buildings; To ensure that the School is compliant and appoints appropriate specialists to cover inspections and surveys for: fire, asbestos, radon, legionella, gas safety, electrical; To provide advice on planning applications; To oversee management of health and safety within the estates department, ensuring near miss, accidents and RIDDOR incidents are reported in a timely fashion; To monitor the use of utilities; To ensure that records are maintained and up to date; To oversee project management including the preparation of the major repairs and renewal plan for this financial year; To maintain oversight of Estates Departmental budgets. A more detailed job description is available on application, however the interim post holder is expected to focus on the aspects of the role described above, during their time here at Sedbergh.     December 2014 www.thelakesschool.com Dear Parent/Carer Has it really been a whole year since I started at The Lakes School? 2014 really has flown by and I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside such a talented and committed team of staff who work relentlessly to provide so many wonderful opportunities for our students. During the year, I have spent a lot of time visiting classrooms and have been so impressed by the range of activities taking place in lessons - students are engaged in their learning, benefiting from the fantastic relationships they have with their teachers. Every day, students embrace the fact that we are a caring school and politely interact with staff and each other, with many of our Sixth Form students taking time to look after the younger students. I have received so many positive comments this year from visitors to the school who have been overwhelmed by the good behaviour of our students and the family atmosphere that one visiting teacher said ‘pervades the school’. Trainee teachers have flourished whilst working with our students and temporary teachers have said how much they love the school and would like to teach here permanently. I’m sure you will agree that this is a huge testament to the ethos at The Lakes School. During the year, we have made a number of changes to help improve our service to students and parents, including changes to our reporting schedule so that we now provide a more regular update for parents about their child’s progress. We have introduced our Attitude to Learning standards which clarify exactly what we expect from our students in lessons and we will continue to report on your child’s Attitude to Learning throughout the year.

    NEWSLETTER TO PARENTS and CARERS December 2014 Trinity School CO-HEADTEACHERS’ LETTER Dear Parents and Carers Here is the final newsletter for 2014, a busy and eventful year for the school. Thank you for your support and encouragement this term, for the work you do with us to ensure that our students become the best they can be. The key question we have posed to students this term, with reference to both Walt Whitman’s poem and the late Robin William’s performance in ‘Dead Poets’ Society’, is ‘What will your verse be?’ It is such an honour to witness our students as they take up the opportunities that are offered to them and ‘write their verse.’ We will be sad to say goodbye to two staff at the end of term. Mr Lythgoe, Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Pastoral care, leaves us to become Principal of Deyes Studio School on Merseyside. We are very grateful to him for the excellent work he has done to ensure that our students are well cared for in his time on the school’s Senior Leadership team. We also say goodbye to Mrs Parker, second in the English department, who leaves us to become Head of English at St Benedict’s School in Whitehaven. We will miss them both and wish them well as they take up their new posts. We have made a number of appointments to cover the staff who are leaving. Mr Charnock joins the Senior Team as Assistant Headteacher for Behaviour and Safety. Mr Hall, Head of Nile House, will also work with the Senior Team for the remainder of the year, whilst continuing as Head of House, as Senior Project Leader with a close focus on classroom conduct.
