Uppsala is a place with an extensive history. From the 3rd century AD, Old Uppsala (Gamla Uppsala) was an important religious, political and economic centre. In fact, remnants left by the Viking forefathers can still be seen today. Legend has it that an impressive pagan temple once stood at Gamla Uppsala and great sacrificial rites were performed to appease Thor, Odin, Frey and other Nordic deities. Three of the pagan kings were buried in Gamla Uppsala 1500 years ago. – 9 – UPPSALA Every year, thousands of new students from around the world arrive in Uppsala to begin their adventure as a university student. In Uppsala, you can get involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities and be part of a thriving student community. Uppsala is the fourth largest city in Sweden and just a forty minute train ride from Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. The large number of students makes Uppsala a lively, exciting and progressive place. Uppsala University has teaching and research grounds spread throughout the city, and the student nations play a dominant role in Uppsala student life. Here, you can enjoy Uppsala’s charming student traditions and at the same time find all the opportunities of a big city. Since the 13th century, Uppsala has been the religious centre of Sweden. Today, Uppsala is the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. The Uppsala Cathedral (Uppsala Domkyrka) is one of the city’s most impressive landmarks. Located centrally, it is the tallest church building in Scandinavia. Like the church, Uppsala University has a historical place in Swedish na- tional identity, and is an important symbol of continuity. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture originated in Uppsala, such as the white student cap.

The train was once used for industrial purposes, hauling coal, lumber and other products from the countryside into Uppsala, but nowadays is strictly a tourist attraction. Arkiverande studenter Om arkivhanteringen vid studentnationerna i Uppsala Mikael Larsson Institutionen för ABM Uppsatser inom arkivvetenskap ISSN 1651-6087 Magisterexamensarbete, 15 högskolepoäng, 2010, nr 64 Författare/Author Mikael Larsson Svensk titel Arkiverande studenter – om arkivhanteringen vid studentnationerna i Uppsala English Title Archiving students – on the archival management at the Student Nations in Uppsala Handledare/Supervisor Reine Rydén Abstract The purpose of this study has been to examine the archival management at the 14 Student Nations in Uppsala. This may be relevant to study to extend the research in the field that Berndt Frediksson calls “empirical archival science”. Another reason is that the Student Nations hold a unique position as organisations and their archivists holds a unique position from a professional point of view as they mostly consist of students without professional archivist training. I have mainly focused on why the archival management at the Nations looked as they did. The main method that was used in the study was semi-structured interviews where I interviewed the archivists at all of the Nations. The functions of the archives of the Nations were the same as for other societies, with the exception that these archives also were used by officials and other members as a support for finding ideas about how to run the Nation today in several ways. The archival regulations and practices that were generally followed by the Nations were the same as for societies in general, that is, among other things, the use of “Allmänna arkivschemat” (the Swedish standard archival finding aid subject heading system) and other Swedish archival standards.

ZESZYTY NAUKOWE UNIWERSYTETU JAGIELLOŃSKIEGO MCCLXXXVI OPUSCULA MUSEALIA Z. 15 2006 Conference proceedings: Awarness and Action - University Museums Today, September 25 - October 1, 2005, Uppsala, Sweden LARSBURMAN Department of Literature, Uppsala University, Sweden University museums as a strategic tool: on communicating university values Ladies and gentlemen, Who is Alma mater? What is she? What does she believe in and how do we come face to face with her? And what is the role of university museums in producing and passing on her knowledge, ideas and values? As you know, we are in one of the oldest university buildings of Uppsala. I suppose that you have already heard that it was the remarkable professor Olaus Rudbeck who redesigned this house in the seventeenth century. When Rudbeck built the Anatomical Theatre (II. 1), he wanted to create facilities for teaching and research, but I am quite convinced that his main aim was to create an impressive house, conveying authority and communicating values. Rudbeck himself wrote that he wanted the building to im press foreigners. The university should stand out in all its splendour, and thus make a statement about the importance of learning and science in a northerly but powerful European state. Buildings, collections, and the people of the university play symbolic roles in the drama of contemporary society - this was true in the seventeenth century and is true today. Alma mater is not a secluded monastery any longer. The universities are big; they are in continuous contact with society at large, constantly negotiating between the eso teric and the exoteric - between complicated theories of modern science and the open ness of a diversified and democratic educational system.

In my view the university museums play an important role both within the universities and as a sort of interface between the academic world and society. But it is of overriding importance that there is a dynamic collaboration between the museums and their universities.
