CROSS COUNTRY 1964

The 1964 Bulldog harriers have achieved another success ful season under the coaching of Mr. John Cassell. The team’s record was eight victories and three losses, including a loss by one point to Blair Academy, an outstanding team. Unlike the last three seasons, Coach Cassell was without a lead man and had to develop a balanced team of five men of fairly equal ability. Captain Dan Lupfer and Tom Grillo, both seniors, combined for five firsts to lead the harriers to their eight victories. Lupfer was named the most valuable with Grillo as the most improved. Filling the remaining positions were Ray Oesterle, a senior, and Tom Crownover, Keith Stewart, Dick Crane, Richard Pernice and Ray Hooper, all juniors. The season was highlighted with a victory over Lawrence- ville Prep and a fourth place finish in Group II at the Central Jersey Championship. In the dual meet finale, the Bulldogs romped over Highland Park, 18-45. The J.V.’s record was two and one; the freshmen, one and one. Tom Crownover, next year’s captain, and four other lettermen will be the nucleus for another successful season in 1965.

The 1964 Bulldogs astounded local rooters and area sportswriters by piling up five victories in their first six games. One pessimistic sports- writer wrote: "George Conti’s squad is so limited that he had best give up any thought of intersquad scrimmages. Should a Bulldog first- stringer be injured by his own men, there just would be no one to replace him. It might be a long season for Metuchen fans.” In retro spect, Metuchenites will agree that the season was three minutes too long. The team finished five and four; with a few favorable bounces of fate, the record would have read seven and two. A 24-yard touchdown run by Harris, with only two minutes remaining, highlighted the 14-7 upset of the South River Rams. A fumble recovery by Sudzina and a pass interception by Muha brought the Bulldogs from a fourth period 7-6 deficit to a 20-7 win over the Roselle Park Panthers. A 75-yard quarterback draw by Meyers turned one of the defensive battles of the ito n p art of tlu

year into a 6-0 victory over the Carteret Ramblers. A torrential down pour and mudbath helped the Contimen heap a 12-0 defeat on the Caldwell Chiefs. The last victory was a 7-0 squeaker over the Keyport Red Raiders. Special recongnition was accorded Mike Sudzina who was named as a first-team all-state Group II tackle; also Jerry Meyers, quarterback, and George Muha, end, both of whom received all-county mention. However, the successes of this 1964 edition did not lie exclusively with these three men. Squad seniors included Kevin Adams, Lee Behrens, Ted Bocra, Calvin Gross, Gary Harris, Rick Priscoe, Jeff Snyder, and Wayne Tagliaboschi; underclassmen were Chuck Bisogno, Lenny Dowhie, Bill McDuffie, Lawton McCombs, John Newcomb, Gary Stura, Scott Still, Pat Jasina, and Jack Skelding. Muha was selected as most valuable; Behrens as most improved.

41 Not too much noise on the bus, except for a few questions on assignments. The sun, coming through the window, was bothering me; it seemed like a long ride. "How you feel, Suds?” We were at the stadium; now the ride seemed short. At the field we broke down into our specialty groups and loosened up. I held a few for George — tricky wind, tough on extra points. Then I took a few punts. The warm-up was begin ning to drag. Let’s get inside; I’m ready. Walking under those stands always seemed peculiar. I was the last one in and felt a silent intensity as I approached the locker room door. Then pow! The noise broke loose. What s happenin ?

^Jurhey < 2 )at/ ’65

Today was the day! The feeling was there, like an electric spark, charging the whole squad. Past performance didn t mean a thing. Only today counted. I had heard many famous athletes attribute vivid memories to their last high school game. Now my own high school football career was drawing to a close — four years of hard work and hard play; the sweat, the blood, the countless little injuries, the bumps and the bruises. What I had learned for four years would be tested today. Every thing. What about the enemy? They’re flesh and blood, school boys like us; no reason we can’t beat them. Will the four years of sweat and blood end in sweet victory or in utter emptiness? The team had met at an early morning hour; yet no one was drowsy or sluggish. I was usually bothered by previous injuries, but this morning I felt good. Real good. I undressed casually and began reading an article written by Jimmy Brown, while waiting to be taped. The article concerned his most memorable moments in football. The first two occurred during his last high school game. Now it was happening to me. Both ankles were wrapped tight and felt good. "Forget the knee this morning. It feels okay.” Now it was happening to me.

Aw, MAN! Tough, really tough. "BEAT HIGHLAND PARK" on our brand new jerseys. So there’s where that $3.60 went. I found my number and suited up. The rumble quieted and Mr. Conti stood before us. He spoke. He didn’t have to say more to get us up. We were up! Out on the field and ready to go. Baby, I’m ready! "Come on, Joe. We win; we defend this goal. Right? That means they’ll probably want to receive.” They win the toss and decide to receive. We get what we want anyway. "W e’ll defend this goal.' Shake hands, the ref said. They’re too confident. I saw it in their eyes. Those H.P. glory boys. We’ll kill 'em.” Let’s go, baby — we’re ready. "Georgie! Put it down there, man. Okay, Joe, you ready? This is it.” We stop the kick-off return and dig in on defense. "Let’s get ’em, Guilla! Hon, Boc!” Oh, brother, the first play I wreck my knee! Penalty! Man, 1 can’t even stand still to talk to the ref! Walk it off, kid, keep walking. Get McCombs in there for him. Okay, fourth down, H.P. Punt receiving — that’s me. Yeah, I’m all right. Yeah, yeah. Come on, ball, come to poppa. Out of bounds — lucky for them. We take over and move them all over the field. Score, baby, score. "Move ’em, Jerr. Let’s go! These guys are punks, real punks. We’re going to slaughter them! Fumble? Darn! Defense!

The second half starts and we receive. Boom. Here comes my man down the field like a train doin’ 90. Man, will that fat punk ever learn? Hit him in the knees — pow! Over like a ton of bricks. Hit him again. Pow! Okay. The game progresses and Metuchen still dominates play. We’ve got ’em by two but we have to hold the ball. Let’s move it, let’s move it. "Come on you guys, get tough. They’re gettin’ too much yard age.” Just can’t hold; got to get the ball and move it. They take over. Policastro drops back. "Screen, screen!” Too late. That fat boy is rolling. Get him somebody, get him. No, no, no! We do nothing with the ball in the remaining minutes. It’s possible to score. "One T.D., baby. Let’s go!” No unit spark, time’s running out. The last high school game. Now it has happened to me. I’m standing next to Pancza after the gun goes off, and he offers his hand. "Nice game,” he says, "too bad you lost.” I pull him back and say, "Yeah, it was too bad. Right?” His smile fades and glory-boy looks a little more serious. I turn in disgust. The ride home was miserable; the showers were miserable. Leaving the school was miserable, and now it has happened .to me. — Jeff Snyder "42”

"We’re stoppin’ ’em. They can’t move us. Here they come, kid, trying to sweep your side. Get up, get up! He hooked your leg again. There goes the knee! Snap! Out again! Darn! Young Conti tell me to move it in circles. Okay, okay, feels a little better. All right, all right — a score! Get in to hold. Extra point on two, on two. Make it good, Newc! Good! All right, baby, kick-off team. Defense. They score. Hell!” The game wears on and we take the lead. By half-time I was thinking: Little puny Metuchen, huh? We’re kicking their tails all over the field. They look bad. We’ll take ’em. "Hey, Gary, hang on to that ball, huh? Who’s picking up Panza on that spread pass pattern?”

43

Though I’d seen twenty-odd seniors move to midfield for the toss of the coin for the past five years, it had never meant so much to me. I loved those "Beat Highland Park” jerseys. This time, as Jeff and Kevin and George and Mike and Calvin and Lee and Teddy and Jerry stood out there, I felt sad but, more im portant, very proud. These were the guys I’d grown up with; the guys who had teased me in grammar school and copied my home work in Junior High and who were now playing their last inter scholastic game. We didn’t win the toss, but when George kicked-off high and deep as usual, I was sure that no Metuchen man was going to lie down and hand the Maroon and Gray an undefeated season; not those seniors!

of QLry

All during that ride to new Brunswick’s Municipal Stadium on Turkey Day, I kept hoping sheer pride and an overwhelming will-to-win could get the boys "up,” way up, up high enough to win. I knew it wouldn’t be easy. Every sports writer in the state had picked Highland Park by at least 21 points. The most optimistic commented that Metuchen "might not give up easily.” The nerve! Didn’t the experts realize, as I had, that we had one big thing going for us — that Highland Park had to win? A loss would make their first eight wins meaningless. A loss might even cost them the Central Jersey Group II crown. Since no one had given us a chance to win, we had nothing to lose but mediocrity.

By the third set of downs my hopes were confirmed. Poli- castro went back to punt and Chuck Bisogno went into a rush. Net result — one blocked punt, one bruised Policastro, and Metuchen’s ball on the H.P. 37. Although we didn t score on that break, or on a second when another punt netted only 12 yards, giving us the ball inside the H.P. 40 again, the mighty, invincible, indestructible Owls had made two bad mistakes, more than they had made all season. I suspected even they knew there were more to come. And, sure enough, the mistakes or weaknesses, perhaps bred by overconfidence, continued to mount as the "mediocre push overs” from Metuchen held Pancza inside the two-yard-line and weren’t fooled by Simcsak’s fake field goal attempt. Finally the errors reached their peak when George hauled in Jerry s 33-yard pass for a touchdown.

46 A Muha Touchdown! I’d been saying all season that he was a great end, one who could block, tackle, and catch better than any other in the county. Now, how could anyone doubt it? He added the extra point and it began to look as if we’d witness a reliving of the 1937 game when George Muha, Sr. scored all of Metuchen’s points for an 18-0 win. Perhaps, just perhaps, this was an omen. Owl coaches must have yelled like all get-out after that. One could tell they couldn’t stand losing, especially not with a team which had been on the short end for only three minutes all season long. Two successful passes put the Owls back on top, 12-7. It just didn’t seem fair that two plays could break our backs. Our boys bounced back.

Only three minutes were left now, and a typically tremendous Muha punt had them on their own 20. W e’d hold; I just knew it. We’d come too close; we’d played too hard; we’d refused to give up too often to lose it all now. A running play yielded nothing; a second, only two yards; and then that screen to Beno — that stupid screen to Beno. Only Muha had a shot at him. He got a leg but Beno pulled it away and the referee signaled . . . touch down. With a little over two minutes left it was 18-14, H.P. By the time we got the ball back, only 30 seconds remained. Yet no one had thrown in the towel. Jerry still faded back to pass. George, Lawton, Gary, and Patty Jasina ran deep, but the gun sounded. It was over. The scoreboard read 18-14. It was over and my heart sank to my feet. Highland Park had its undefeated season and all Metuchen had was a handful of dust; but I knew, as everyone from Coach Conti to that sophomore halfback who had guarded the Goal Post Trophy knew, Highland Park had met its master. So, as the tears filled my eyes, I said to myself, "W e’re the Class of ’65. We’re the toughest ones alive. We’re the Class of ’65. We beat Highland Park!” — Maryann McDermott

Lawton carried to our 40; then Jerry did it again — a 58-yard pass to Lawton. All season long some Sunday morning experts had been saying Jerry couldn’t throw if his life depended on it; but on two plays he had proved that he could. After a one-yard plunge, it was 14-12. We were ahead going into the rest period. I looked over to the east stands then. It was still there. Sue Borden and Linda Rosenberg weren’t cheering (they must have been in a state of shock) and the alumni must have wished they could go out there and help. Nothing like this had ever happened when they played. Yet the entire fourth quarter was left, and the Owls were getting hot. Twice they got down deep. Once they got in, but a penalty brought it back. Finally, Policastro tried to run wide, only to have Jeff hit him low and hard and make him wish he’d let someone else carry the ball.

The big win over Highland Park saved an otherwise mediocre season for the 1964-65 local cagers. The official record was three wins and eighteen losses. Counted on for next year are Barry and Lawton McCombs, Bruce Dangremond and Glen Collins. The JV ’s attained a 6-12 record; the freshmen were 3-16. Kevin Adams was selected most valuable; George Levin, most improved. Metuchen vs. H. P. . . . V icto ry

On February 9, Election Day in Metuchen, the Bulldogs’ cagers elected to give Highland Park a sound drubbing by a 65 to 58 margin, chalking up only the third victory ever by the locals. In 1958 and again in I960, under the guidance of Coach James Kelly, the Metuchen varsity beat Highland Park’s. Since that time there has been a conspicuous famine. Entering the game with a one and twelve record, the game was played minus the presence of Coach Bill Blindow. At the end of the game, Kevin Adams had the distinction of phoning the happy news to the ailing Mr. Blindow. During the game, Mr. McDonnell filled in. In a discussion some weeks after the triumph, several of the players remembered the game in roughly the following manner: Adams: "W e were really up for that game, more than any other. On the other hand, Highland Park seemed over confident.” Roger Keaton: "They were over-confident all right. Boy, it was tough sitting on the bench most of the game. We all wanted to play. I finally got in for Dangremond.” George Levin: "Coach McDonnell helped us get up for the game. He talked to me during the school day.” Ken Kiesser: "He spoke to me, too. He reminded me that it would be my last chance against Highland Park, things like that.” Adams: "W e played a different game than usual. We shot more. Our instructions were to shoot when we got clear. We did and the ball started dropping through the hoop.” Levin: "W e played more like a unit than ever before. They tried to press us but it didn’t work. But that Policastro was tough. Think he hit for 21 points.” Kiesser: "We all got scared when they started catching up to us at the end. We thought we had the game locked up. We started throwing the ball away. That’s when Coach McDonnell called a time-out and told us to hold onto that ball and only shoot when we had a good shot.” Keaton: "The crowd helped. Their yelling and screaming for us kept the boys at their peak.” Adams: "Those foul shots we sank at the end saved us, I’d say. With that big lead in the third quarter, I thought we had it.” Levin: "Have to give those guys lots of credit for not giving up. Finally, when we were five points up with 50 seconds left to play, I figured we had it sewed up.” Keaton: "We did well under the boards. Dangremond helped a lot there. Too bad he can’t play today, but he’s in the hospital.” Adams: "Lawton McCombs played a good game. He thinks we should have done better. Me, I’ll settle for beating those guys, that’s all that counts.” Levin: "McCombs says we’ll slaughter ’em in ’66.” Kiesser: "We beat Carteret two days later. This time with Mr. Blindow there. That was a big game to win, too.” Adams: "Yeah, good thing. Our team got better as the season went along.” Keaton: "Just slow starters. Next year, we’ll have to go strong, right from the gun.” At that point, Kiesser, Levin and Adams regretted that their high school career was over and wished Keaton good luck for the next season. They agreed that they would not soon forget that Big Election Night when Metuchen High School fans gave them a big vote of confidence.

This season’s varsity grapplers defeated teams from Edison Town ship’s John F. Kennedy High School and St. Mary’s of Perth Amboy. The locals lost nine meets. Under the tutelage of Coaches Faeth and Rees, the squad consist ently demonstrated excellent spirit and superb conditioning. With only three seniors on the squad — Jeff Snyder, Fred Weinberg and Bill Errickson — the wrestling picture should continue to brighten. Strong individual performances were produced by 168-pound Den nis Kerr, a junior who placed fourth in the district tournament; and Jeff Rule, a 98-pound freshman who placed second in the novice tourna ment at Piscataway. Weinberg, Kerr and Dick Crane posted winning season records. The team selected Kerr as the most valuable and Fred Keeperman as most improved.

JUNE

IJLi ere weren t many surprises when the Senior P o ( ( ivcii announce\d ; w e d l, not too many:

The Best-Looking were Judy Reeder, our Miss Merry Christmas, and George Muha with his Southern charm (South Side of course). Janice Hodes’ beautiful sweaters and Terry Moyer’s collegiate "air” helped their election as BEST DRESSED.

Tom "The Met” Cheche, our perennial master of cere monies, and Eileen O’Connor, mistress of spectacular bon mots, are the W ITTIEST. Jay Rose of harmonica fame and Carol Grushewsky were chosen TEACHERS’ TORMENT, though many vied for this infamous reputation.

Ruth Grant, National Merit finalist, and Ron Mikulak, our paper’s editor-in-chief, are the MOST INTELLECTUAL. Barbara Behnen and Barry Vozar are the SHYEST, despite what you may hear to the contrary.

Our MOST ARTISTIC are Georgene Dicker and Bill Drew who have worked on countless backdrops and show cases. B ill Clausen, trumpeter, and Peggy Lodge, pianist, are the MOST MUSICAL. B ill deserves a special citation for w ith standing Mr. Paley’s jokes; we understand that Peggy has "Sleigh Ride” under control after three years.

Cheche scores again as MOST D R A M A TIC along with Karen Motylewski. Both could be frequently observed on our stage. Of course, Tom is "on” most of the time.

Dan Isbit, student council president, merited his election as DID MOST FOR M.H.S.; elected with him was Maryann McDermott, whose extraordinary school spirit was evident at

100 athletic events and on the staffs of publications. Understand ably, Danny and Maryann were acknowledged to be the MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED.

M.H.S. sports fans w ill recognize the name of Kevin Adams; a three letter man, and his feminine counterpart, Carol Lo- Castro, and can understand why they were voted MOST ATHLETIC. Carol’s prowess lies not only in athletics, but in many other fields and Danny Isbit’s talents range from acting as "Prez” in "Pajama Game” to president of the Student Council.. No wonder they were voted MOST VERSATILE.

If you were to ask anyone who the CLASS COUPLE was, they’d answer Marie Toth and Ray Oesterle. Seldom seen with one person, on the other hand, are the BIGGEST FLIRTS, Judy Zimmerman and "Buzzy” Blyer. "Tothie” was also voted CUTEST, along with our baby-faced wrestler, Billy Errickson. Another obvious choice was Kate Cotton and Rick Priscoe as MOST GULLIBLE. Kate would believe anything you told her about Murray the K and Rick is noted for his lunch table antics.

Possibly our best known seniors, Suzy Perpente and Jeff Snyder, were voted MOST POPULAR. It just goes to show that "good things come in small packages.”

So ends the saga of the Class of ’65.
