Stewart, D. Crane, D. Lupfer, R. Pernice, R. Oesterle. Standing: C. Dietz, R. Hooper, T. Crownover, T. Grillo and Coach Cassell. CROSS COUNTRY 1964 The 1964 Bulldog harriers have achieved another success ful season under the coaching of Mr. John Cassell. The team’s record was eight victories and three losses, including a loss by one point to Blair Academy, an outstanding team. Unlike the last three seasons, Coach Cassell was without a lead man and had to develop a balanced team of five men of fairly equal ability. Captain Dan Lupfer and Tom Grillo, both seniors, combined for five firsts to lead the harriers to their eight victories. Lupfer was named the most valuable with Grillo as the most improved. Filling the remaining positions were Ray Oesterle, a senior, and Tom Crownover, Keith Stewart, Dick Crane, Richard Pernice and Ray Hooper, all juniors. The season was highlighted with a victory over Lawrence- ville Prep and a fourth place finish in Group II at the Central Jersey Championship. In the dual meet finale, the Bulldogs romped over Highland Park, 18-45. The J.V.’s record was two and one; the freshmen, one and one. Tom Crownover, next year’s captain, and four other lettermen will be the nucleus for another successful season in 1965. Coach Cassell talks informally to budding dalers. 26 Dick Crane SCORES Tom Crownover Metuchen Opponent 30 ____ Edison __ ________ ...... 26 20 ____ South Brunswick ... ...... 43 19 ____ Roselle Park 43 THE STATE MEET 23 ____ Lawrenceville Prep. ...... 34 28 ____ St. Mary’s (P.A.) _ - - 32 38 St. Benedict’s Prep. ___ 18 19 _ _ South River______ ..... 44 25 .....- M adison________ _— 36 25 ____ South Plainfield___ — 36 28 ____ Blair Academy____ ___ 27 18 ____ Highland Park____ ...... 45 The beginning of the race Captain Dan Lupfer 2 7 VARSITY SQUAD 1961 — Kneeling (L. to R.): J. Oesterle, J. Wells, D. Lupfer, C. Dietz, T. Grillo and Coach Cassell. Since 1961 I have been associated with some of the best cross During that season, the JV s — Chris Modla, Ray Oesterle, John country teams ever to run for MHS. During my freshman year, Lydic, Neill Wells, and I — turned in an impressive 5-1 record. the varsity squad proved to be one of the youngest and strongest In my junior year, Konopka, Craig Conover, Jim Crownover and teams in the state, with Ed Lynn as the only senior on the team. Dan Lupfer were the returning lettermen. The team, also including Tom Muenger and Jerry Konopka, the team’s most valuable and Ron McHale, Oesterle, Lydic, Tom Grillo, Wells and myself, most improved runners respectively, captured first and second place racked up a 9-4-1 record, continuing the succession of impressive in the majority of the meets.
