ROE VALLEY NEWS (HTTP://WWW.LONDONDERRYSENTINEL.CO.UK/NEWS/LOCAL-NEWS/ROE-VALLEY-NEWS) Albert displays a piece of Sentinel history

FIRST editions are often highly sought after and tend to fall into the category of 'collectibles', but for Waterside man Albert Smallwoods, recently finding some old newspapers in the attic filled him with a touch of nostalgia.

Mr Smallwoods was having a clear out when he happened upon the papers, the first was colour-fronted Londonderry Sentinel, of tabloid size, which featured Her Royal Highness the Princess Margaret on her visit in June 1963, as well as an edition of the Sentinel from July 20, 1933, in almost pristine condition, which is in broadsheet format.

"As you get older the day will come when you won't be able to go up into your attic and, therefore, I wanted to have less clutter to be cleared out by someone else so I decided to clear out a lot of the stuff there.

"I came across the 1933 edition which was given to me by Sir Michael McCorkell, which commemorates the opening of Craigavon Bridge, and the Cathedral Tercentenary Gates, as well as that, the Lord Mayor of London was here and the paper also covered the visit of the then King and Queen."

Asked how he came to have that particular edition, he said: "I asked Sir Michael six or eight years ago if he would he have a photograph of his uncle, Sir Dudley McCorkell, who in the 1930's served as Mayor of the City, as I have an interest in the St John Ambulance Brigade, and Senator Sir Dudley McCorkell was also the Commissioner for the West of ," he said.

"I came upon the copy of the paper featuring Princess Margaret in a shop in town. Usually we bought all our newspapers in Orr's shop on Spencer Road, so its possible I bought it there. I bought it because it was traditional to buy the paper every week, and decided to keep it because, to my knowledge, it was the first time the paper was printed in colour on the front."

Indeed the front of the Sentinel that issue shows the Princess talking to Lord Snowdon on the steps of the Guildhall, with the Mayor Commander Anderson, and Sir Basil McFarland, Her Majesty's Lieutenant for the City, and what looks like could be the Mace bearer from the Guildhall, who is in profile to the right hand side.

Mr Smallwoods added: "There are two other intersting things that connect me with this picture. In1968 I met Princess Margaret, shook hands with her and had a cup of tea with her. She was Commandant of the St John Ambulance Cadets and Wales were celebrating 60 years of the formation of the St John and they held a camp in Swansea and she was visiting the camp and I was the leader of the Northern contingent.

"Commander Anderson's family owned Deanfield Estate, off Limavady Road, where I now live. It used to be it was just one house but the estate is now populated with housing, while the original desmene is now a nursing home."
