  • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

  • The Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S
June 23, 2020 Honorable Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House 1236 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Honorable Kevin McCarthy Republican Leader 2468 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Speaker Pelosi and Leader McCarthy: Since the killing of George Floyd just one month ago, our country has seen protests grow, attitudes shift, and calls for change intensify. We in the music and entertainment communities believe that Black lives matter and have long decried the injustices endured by generations of Black citizens. We are more determined than ever to push for federal, state, and local law enforcement programs that truly serve their communities. Accordingly, we are grateful for movement of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S. House of Representatives and urge its quick passage. The Justice in Policing Act is not about marginal change; it takes bold steps that will make a real, positive difference for law enforcement and the communities they serve. We celebrate the long- overdue rejection of qualified immunity, emphasizing that law enforcement officers themselves are not above the law – that bad cops must be held accountable and victims must have recourse. We applaud the provisions to ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, to establish a national police misconduct registry, to collect data and improve investigations into police misconduct, to promote de-escalation practices, to establish comprehensive training programs, and to update and enhance standards and practices. This legislation will not only promote justice; it will establish a culture of responsibility, fairness, and respect deserving of the badge. Our communities and nation look to you to take a stand in this extraordinary moment and we respectfully ask that you vote YES on the Justice in Policing Act of 2020.

SUMMER 2011 IU Indianapolis LAW Alumni Magazine The IMPACT Campaign: Your Chance to Make a Difference for the Law School INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW – INDIANAPOLIS Message from the Dean As I comPLete my fouRth yeAR As DeAn, I am struck by what a marvelous law school we have, how far it has come in its brief history with a full-time day program, and the tremendous impact it and its more than 10,000 alumni have on Indiana and beyond. We should all be extremely proud. At the same time, however, I am also struck by the fact that as good as the school is, there is still much we need to do to make it the very best it can be. for this reason, we are embarking on an ambitious capital campaign, the success of which is vital to the school’s ability, in an increasingly competitive environment, to continue producing great lawyers, judges, and leaders. this issue of the magazine focuses on this campaign and, consistent with our recently adopted strategic plan, on the areas in which resources raised will be invested—faculty, student scholarships, nationally prominent programs and skills training/experiential learning. While the school is generally ranked highly among all u.s. law schools, its funding is near the bottom. our direct expenditures per student last year ranked 141st out of 198 and our financial aid per student budget was in the bottom quartile. our resources are by far the lowest of all Big ten law schools. If we can provide an excellent education for students with this small amount of funding, consider what we could do if we had sufficient dollars to do what most other law schools can do already—such as fund endowed faculty chairs, or offer core classes with fewer than 100 students in the classroom.

REDINOCENTE: THE CHALLENGE OF BRINGING INNOCENCE WORK TO LATIN AMERICA Justin Brooks* t In 2008, I traveled to Oruro, Bolivia to train defense attorneys on DNA technology. I had done similar trainings in Chile, Paraguay, Mexico, and other countries in Latin America, but nowhere that felt quite so remote. The 143-mile bus trip from La Paz passed through dusty villages filled with mud huts and lacking basic infrastructure. The bus stopped many times, picking up Chola women wearing shawls and derby hats, and carrying their huge satchels of goods to sell and trade. It seemed unlikely that the technology I would be talking about would have much value in this remote outpost. My fears were confirmed when I talked to the lawyers I was training in Oruro. They lacked access to basic technology and there were certainly no DNA labs readily available to them. On the other hand, I became optimistic when I talked to the local judges.
