1. Call to Order Assistant Commissioner Armstrong called the meeting to order at 11:00am.

2. Chairperson Planells volunteered to be the Chairperson of the committee.

3. Educational Pieces It was brought up that there has been some thought by student-athletes about kneeling for the national anthem. It was questioned what it actually means to the players who kneel, and are they only doing it because it’s a movement that started on television. Sahmanovic mentions that England’s soccer team kneels for 10 seconds before every game to represent unity.

An idea was discussed and asked if there can be a conference-wide statement that is said by the PA announcer before each home contest to signify unity in our conference and society. Sahmanovic also mentioned a “moment of action” for a post-game message where competing teams can come together to promote unity.

4. GSAC United Campaign The GSAC plans to get wristbands and stickers with a new “GSAC United” logo as part of a campaign that aims to show unity throughout the conference and in society. GSAC United will involve all student-athletes, coaches, etc. in an effort to bring all conference members together.

5. School SAAC’s The conference’s first goal with the SAAC’s is to have a functioning committee at every member institution. Zarate mentioned that it would be great to integrate both the GSAC SAAC and I.D.E.A. Committee and work together on certain projects or educational pieces.

6. Website Informational Page The GSAC I.D.E.A. Committee webpage has been created and is on the GSAC website under the ‘Governance’ tab.

7. Working Through a Book Mascaro mentioned that Vanguard’s committee is reading a book called ‘Be the Bridge’ and Jones-Lin mentioned that her team is reading a book called ‘Roadmap to Reconciliation’. The committee will try to figure out a text to read and discuss as a group after the holidays. The group was asked to come to January’s meeting with some ideas of books/journals the committee could work through.

8. Future Meeting Dates Achay will create a Doodle poll to inquire details about a potential meeting in January.
