City of San Bernardino Historical and Pioneer Society P.O. Box 875, San Bernardino, CA 92402 LIBRARY NEWS FEBRUARY 2008 By Richard D. Thompson, Librarian Historic Tours of the San Bernardino Area “Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear” February 9th Tour: The San Bernardino Buildings of Howard E. Jones and Associates Several months ago while I was reading the “Donaldson Report,” an architectural study of historic San Bernardino, I ran across a section on the courthouse. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and although I have never gone through the process, I would imagine the federal government requires a lot of paperwork to justify putting a site on the list. This sub-report lists the architect of the courthouse as Howard E. Jones, and gives some interesting biographical data. Particularly interesting is that Jones spent most of his life in San Bernardino, and the list of structures he designed is most impressive. Since that time I have done a little research on him, enough to know that he was a major figure in building the San Bernardino I grew up in. Recently, Allen Bone discovered that one of the fellows he frequently has coffee with, Clare M. Day, was associated with the Jones firm. Mr. Day, a well-respected architect in his own right, and now a resident of Redlands, worked for Jones in 1950 and ‘51. In 1954, Day won an award from the publication Progressive Architecture for his design of a proposed central library in San Bernardino, one to take the place of the Carnegie Library.

  • The US Department Store Industry in the 1990S
Regulatory Constrained Portfolio Restructuring: The US Department Store Industry in the 1990s Abstract The US department store industry has undergone a recent round of strategic acquisition-based portfolio restructuring. This paper analyses one such acquisition, studying how its geography is restructured in the pre- merger stage to conform to the Federal Trade Commission's 'fix-it-first' policy and to improve the strategic fit of the transaction. The article then investigates evidence, and analyses the effects, of a new era of stricter FTC enforcement, where divestiture may no longer be sufficient in cases of horizontal market overlap. Fundamentally, the paper considers the nature of 'real' regulation in action, as rules partially dictate investment decisions. Keywords : retail, regulation, antitrust, divestiture Steve Wood Department of Geography, University of Southampton, SO17 1BJ Email: [email protected] Revised February 2001. Forthcoming in Environment and Planning A INTRODUCTION There are numerous forms of corporate restructuring a firm may adopt in order to succeed in competitive markets. These have been well documented within the economic geography literature (e.g. Clark, 1993b; 1994; Clark et al. , 1992; McGrath-Champ, 1999). First, an organisation may pursue financial restructuring; changing the capital structure of the firm to increase shareholder value. High leverage restructurings (LBOs and leveraged recapitalisations) in particular, have met with varied levels of success across different industries and firms (Bowman et al. , 1999). Second, a firm may restructure organisationally, redesigning its operations to align with the firm’s strategy (cf. Porter, 1980). Finally, and most obviously, a firm may restructure its portfolio of business units to sharpen its focus by disposing of units peripheral to its broader goals and core operations, eliminating under-performing units, or alternatively acquiring other operations and integrating either horizontally or vertically (see Bowman et al.

  • HUDSON THEATER, 139-141 West 44Th Street, Manhattan
Landmarks Preservation Commission November 17, 1987; Designation List 196 LP-1340 HUDSON THEATER, 139-141 West 44th Street, Manhattan. Built 1902-04; architects J.B. McElfatrick & Son and Israels & Harder. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 997, Lot 15. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Hudson Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 36). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-two witnesses spoke or read statements into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The then owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Hudson Theater survives today as one of the historic playhouses that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1902-04, the Hudson was part of a burst in theater construction that shaped the character of Times Square as the new heart of New York's theater district. It survives today as one of the very few turn-of-the-century theaters in the Broadway/Times Square area. The Hudson was bui 1 t for Henry B. Harris, one of the era's top Broadway producers. Harris, who grew up in Boston, worked in theaters in Boston and on the road, managing such stars as Lilly Langtry.
