The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies of oil and gas companies represent a key element behind this perception. If these CSR strategies are resulting in genuine contributions to environmental targets, they could be regarded as one important tool for achieving the green shift. Whether CSR strategies can be effective in this way depends on several societal framework conditions. Young people constitute an indispensable element in this context, as this group indicates the evolution of those social norms and identities CSR strategies must take into consideration. Recent climate protests of young people in Norway and all over the world put the established CSR strategies and the ability of the industry to contribute to the green transition to the test. The response of the Norwegian oil and gas industry to these protests is particularly significant, as Norwegian society is strongly guided by the idea of aligning economic activity with societal values. Stronger than elsewhere, companies are expected to contribute to values across environmental, social, and economic dimensions as stipulated by the policy guidelines set by the Norwegian government. This study thus examines how young people at various Norwegian institutions perceive and portray the oil industry’s response to the recent

NORWEGIAN ENVIRONMENTALISM BETWEEN STATE AND LOCAL COMMUNITY: WHY GREENPEACE FAILED IN NORWAY Kristin Strømsnes, Per Selle and Gunnar Grendstad Why is it that Greenpeace never succeeded in Norway? To answer this question, we have to examine the way organized environmentalism is configured in the Norwegian case. This is a case that does not easily fit into the general assumptions behind the definitions of environmentalism that has been generated by the bulk of ‘continental’ or ‘Anglo-Saxon’ literature (see Grendstad et al. 2006). We argue that the Norwegian case deviates from the mainstream definition of environmentalism due to two anomalies. The roots of the two anomalies are found at different but interrelated levels of analysis. The first anomaly is that the Norwegian political and social system differs when compared to systems in most other countries in that adversary actors or interests are not excluded from national politics, but, in general, are welcomed by the government. We label this anomaly the inclusive polity and the state-friendly society. In short, we refer to it as the state-friendly society. This anomaly, which has a long historical tradition, is primarily found at a structural level. But it also ties in with mainstream attitudes and beliefs that define part of the Norwegian political culture. The other anomaly is more ideological, although this, too, has strong structural ties because national environmental concern is influenced by a notion of social hardship and self-sufficiency as part of local living.

Today, thirteen OECD countries have passed landmark legislative reforms that call for compulsory prepayment and universal entitlement to comprehensive services, while most of the others achieve similar coverage through a mixture of public and private voluntary arrangements. This study carried out a detailed analysis of why, how and to what effect governments became involved in health care financing in eight of these countries. During the early phase of this evolution, reliance on direct out-of-pocket payment and an unregulated market mechanism for the financing, production and delivery of health care led to many unsatisfactory outcomes in the allocation of scarce resources, redistribution of the financial burden of illness and stabilisation of health care activities.

According to more or less reliable censuses, they number today about 40 000 in Norway (1 per cent of the total population), 20000 in Sweden (0.25 per cent), 4500 in Finland (0.1 per cent) and 2000 on the Kola peninsula in Russia. Only Finland has had a regular ethnic census. The Samis call themselves sapmi or sabmi. It is only recently (after 1950) that this name has been generally accepted in the Nordic countries (singular same, plural samer). Tacitus wrote about fenni;1 Old English had finnas;2 Historia NorvegitE (History of Norway) written about P80 had finni,3 and the Norse word was {imzar. 4 In medieval Icelandic and Norwegian literature, Finnmork was the region in northern Scandinavia where the Samis lived. The northern­ most Norwegian fylke (county) of today, Finnmark, takes jts name from the huge medieval Finnmork. Bern Convention Secretariat 20 November 2012 Dear Prime Ministers Jens Stoltenberg, Fredrik Reinfeldt and Jyrki Katainen 25 Environmental NGOs in Norway, Sweden and Finland on behalf of 800.000 members are calling for a more ambitious, responsible and long-term management plan for our shared large carnivore populations, to safeguard their existence in the Fennoscandian ecosystems. We encourage the governments of Norway, Sweden and Finland to establish a joint management platform for large carnivores, beginning with the wolf. The Scandinavian wolf population is suffering from isolation, reduced genetic variation and inbreeding. Sweden has approximately 300 wolves, and the wolf is classified as Endangered on the national Red List. Finland’s wolf population has now been reduced to less than 200 individuals, and is classified as Endangered in the Red List. In Norway the wolf population size is down to 25 individuals in total. Wolves in Norway are listed as Critically Endangered in the Red List. The politically defined population target allows only three annual litters, which is the main reason for the current Red List classification. Furthermore, only around one per cent of Norway’s territory is designated for occupation by wolves.

    6 CASE TWO: Reversals of Body-Law in Norway: Birth Control and Abortion 6.1 Introduction: Same Issues, Different Direction, Different Result Both the United States and Norway underwent social movements that advocated for the right to birth control and to have an abortion within certain parameters; but those paths took different forms and eventually led to significant differences. Effectively, the Storting became the arena in which the debate on these measures took place in Norway. In America, reformers worked at both the state and federal levels within their individual state legislatures, all the while attempting various arguments at the Supreme Court level. In contrast to the American case law resulting from the facts in Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479 (1965), the Norwegian Storting had, at various times, passed laws on birth control and abortion from the late 1950s to 1978, in which accommodations on the issues had been reached and legally formalized within that body. But in 1978, the new Norwegian law was the result of a legislative consensus which itself was based on a larger socio-political upheaval. Norwegian women had tried for as long as their country had existed to extract the same reproductive rights as their American counterparts had also fought for, working consistently but also unsuc- cessfully on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. At the beginning of the Storting session in 1978, members of the Norwegian Stort- ing who might have happened to read Aftenposten, could have read about protests by both the Christian-based Folkesaksjon (People’s Action Against Abortion, FASA) and the Feminist Movement in Oslo and throughout Norway.914 Segments of the national Lutheran Church (Den Norske Kirke, DNK) in Norway became the leading resisters to social change especially change with regard to the role of women in society and to any changes in sexual norms.
