Caliban is referred to as a “born devil” because he is the son of a witch . Caliban is so brutal that good education had no effect on him. The precious article was lost in the pool. Stephano, Trinculo and Caliban were led to the stinking pool under enchantment of Ariel. They were left into the pool upto their chins and thus they lost their battles. Q2. Who is a harmless fairy? According to Caliban why is the fairy harmless? Ans. A harmless fairy is he who never hurts anyone. Ariel is the harmless fairy here. According to Caliban, the fairy is harmless as he often hears such sounds on the as this island is full of mysterious sounds and melodies which are pleasant to the ear and are harmless. Q3. Ans. ‘Good mischief’ is to do something evil so that there will be good outcome of this, the good mischief is to kill Prospero and to win the island forever. How is the subplot integrated in the main plot? Ans. The subplot referred here is plotting of Prospero’s murder. This made Caliban realise that Prospero was a far better master than Stephano and was indeed very powerful. Q6. Q1. What is meant by: “The dropsy drown this fool!”? Why is Caliban annoyed with Trinculo? Ans. ‘This fool' here refers to Trinculo. Caliban curses Trinculo by saying that Trinculo may be affected by dropsy i.e. a disease which causes swelling to the body. Caliban is annoyed with Trinculo as he does not understand the severity of the situation and is more interested in stealing the trumpery. Q2. What was the murder plan? If it is not done, what would follow? Ans. The murder plan was killing Prospero by battering his head with the log of wood by ripping up his stomach with a stake or cutting his windpipe with a knife. If Prospero is not murdered, he would cause pinches in their bodies from head to toe and transform them into strange creatures. Q3. What is referred to as mistress line and as under the line? What allusion is there in their usage? Ans. There is pun on line. Mistress line means clothes line and under the line means equator line. It is an allusion to what happens to people who pass the line of equator. The violent fever which they contract in that hot climate make them lose their hair. Q4. What is meant by, “ Steal by line and level “? Why does Stephano give Trinculo another garment? Ans. “Steal by line and level” is a pun continued on line. Line refers to sailor’s plumbline and level refers to carpenter’s level. Trinculo says that they will seal very systematically as if it were the matter of line and level. Stephano is very pleased by the use of pun by Trinculo to appreciate his wit. He rewards Trinculo with another garments as a king of the island. Q5. Where do the three plotters finally go? Ans. The three plotters finally go to Prospero’s cell. They are unaware that Prospero is awake and is invisibly watching them. Q6. Q1:Who are Fury and Tyrant? What are they asked to do? ANS: Fury and Tyrant are names of Prospero’s spirits who are in the shape of dogs and hounds. They are asked to chase and hunt Caliban, Trinculo and Stephano. Q2: Why are Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo punished? Ans: Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo are punished for being wicked and plotting murder of Prospero. Q3: How does Prospero intend further to punish the three culprits? Ans: Prospero asks the spirits named Mountain, Silver, fury And Tyrant to chase Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo. These spirits are in the form of dogs and hounds and are urged to hunt three of them. Prospero tells the spirits to afflict them with stiffness and pain in their joints which will contract their muscles with cramps. He also orders them to pinch them so that they appear spotted than a leopard or a wild mountain cat. Q4: Finally, what happens to the three culprits at the end? What does it show about Prospero? Ans: The three culprits are hunted thoroughly and are at the mercy of Prospero. Prospero decides not to take revenge finally and forgives them. This shows that Prospero is not revengeful and believes in forgiveness rather than taking revenge. Q5: How is the theme of forgiveness carried out in the plot? Ans.
