Trying to build a program - had a 3rd/4th grade camp, 5th/6th grade camp, 7th/8th grade camp, 9th grade camp all separate. Hosted summer league for HS - players coach themselves 2. Jim Blackburn a. The opponent doesn’t care if it’s the coach’s kid or not b. Easy to coach son if he stays “on level” with his grade; harder to coach if he is a sophomore on varsity, etc. 3. Joe Lombard - Canyon HS Girls BB - 19 state basketball championships a. Basketball gives so much to us as coaches, give it back to our players, community b. Learn and use and grow as a coach every day 4. Don’t be a “clock watcher” - the work takes the work - Royce Huseman b. Don’t copy someone else - be who you are as a coach 7. Dominic Amorosa a. Basketball has become such a guard dominated game - have to have a style of play that fits the players b. Transition Offense is higher points per possession than half court offense c. Build a mindset of toughness - pick up full court, run when we have the ball d. Can still shoot great shots as a transition oriented team 8. Dominic Amorosa a. Starting a new program is way easier because the style of play is all they know b. “Kingwood Park Basketball” shirts all over the place - create the identity c. Didn’t cut any players the first year - 5 teams w/ only 3 coaches i. First year - just wanted everyone to play 9. Doug Galyean - Eastland HS BBB - Friend of Don Meyer a. Building Trust is more important than drawing plays b. Trust leads to players wanting to grow as players c. Don Meyer loved to teach, pray, and talk basketball b. Coach Meyer- tough to play for but he loved his players, and the players were now “one of his guys” c. Wanted to be more like Jesus every day - to serve not be served 11. Ross Hodge - Associate HC UNT MBB a. Larry Eustacey - wanted to play defense HIS way, but offense would change based on players. Players are important b. Punish for turnovers - if players get tentative because they are afraid to turn it over.. Good… those guys won’t be our top players c. At the small school - find ways to get easy baskets c. Transition offense is similar to 6 man football 13. Trae Moore - Retired coach Martin’s Mill HS BBB a. Don’t make one loss more that it is b. Depending on personality, it may be best to move around every 5-6 years c. Work on end of game situations every practice 14. Trae Moore a. Blockout like crazy the first 3 minutes of the game - hit hard b. Players must know their roles c. Offensive philosophy - score in first 7 seconds or make 7 passes d. Practice broken up into quarters i. 1st quarter - Shooting/Skills ii. 2nd quarter - Team Defense iii. 3rd quarter - Team Offense iv. 4th quarter - Scrimmage/Situations 15. Trae Moore a. You can be tough on kids behind closed doors, but in front of the crowd, be positive b. Must be able to tell the kids truth and must tell the parents the same thing 16. Alex Stephenson - Dodd City GBB a. Get advice from winning coaches *first learn how to practice b. Can have mentor coaches without even knowing them. c. Women’s basketball can influence HS boys and Men’s basketball can influence HS girls teams 17. Alex Stephenson a. Alex Stephenson a. Players cannot be timid - must know exactly where to be and sprint there b. In zone pressure - play the passing lanes not the person 19. Cornelius Mitchell - Legacy HS BBB a. Coaches he learned from carry themselves in a professional manner. The way they speak, dress, and communicate in all situations. Be a professional 20. Cornelius Mitchell a. Help players be the best they can individually but that player must be willing to work with the team. b. Trick players into not being so selfish - help them help us c. Players must play hard - only reason they get pulled out of drills is not play hard d. Play lots of 1 on 1 up to 5 on 5 - players see themselves getting better 21. Cornelius Mitchell a. AAU isn’t going anywhere so use it to benefit team/program/players b. Good and bad in both HS and AAU i. Good - kids are playing, getting “exposure” and staying in shape 22. Zak Boisvert - US ARMY MBB a. If he was a HS coach - practice paint finishes a ton, offense built on spacing, pressure on defense b. Army Hoops - Toughness, competitiveness, enthusiasm, leadership c. Core Values are important but staff must live them 23. Beth Jesurun - Former TABC President - Hunstville GBB a. More of a parent off the court to players - more of a teacher/coach on the court b. Teach players to watch video NOT as a fan, but a player c. Lift girls two days a week *shoot at the end of practice 24. Need players that know how to play 5 on 5 (not 1on1 or 3on3, etc) c. Great coaches are continually asking questions 25. Scott Richardson - Christoval GBB / AD a. Girls and boys difference in coaching i. Girls - try and do exactly what you say. Need more ways to help your team score. Coachable to a fault. Skill may be a bigger factor ii. Boys - may give them more freedom on offense. Sometimes a little hard headed. Rely more on athleticism - a bigger factor iii. Be proactive with players on playing time *Be clear and consistent *Sit em down and talk to them b. Players sometimes understand it better than parents c. Make a huge deal about players roles d. Document/Journal - write down feelings/issues had in practice; games; etc i. Will help with patterns of our behavior as coaches e. Parent issues - are good- because we all want to be at a place that is passionate about hoops. Passionate parents mean they care about what we do *allows for more patience 27. Scott Richardson a. As an AD wants coaches who 1) give a championship level daily (no matter the sport) 2) Don’t want to win only at one sport bc that doesn’t build championship mindset b. People around us love other sports like we love basketball c. There are lots of pressures from other people *Think like the AD at times - what does he deal with? d. The biggest problem he deals with - poor communication between coach/player/parents 28. Eric Littleton - Flower Mound HS BBB a. Dean Smith at UNC built a family atmosphere no matter the status - very unique at the college level b. Culture eats strategy for breakfast - UNC Basketball Family showed that c. Family of Faith lead him to learn that serving is most important. “Life isn’t about me” 29. Eric Littleton a. Personnel is important in defensive philosophy *what gives us best chance to win? b. Point zone at Flower Mound - perfect because smart kids, good size, they believe in it c. Shoot it quick and have fun on offense “life is too short to not enjoy this moment” 30. Eric Littleton a. Loves watching film and loves hoops, but don’t let it become a god b. Faith in God, Love spouse, have a relationship with our own kids c. Can we be as detailed oriented in our life? Likes the girls personalities so much more than the guys c. Focus on the Process of just working each day d.
