PO Box 2886 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Sugar Land, TX [email protected] www.tabchoops.org 77487 Vol. XLII No. 8 August 20, 2020 Exceptional Times Call For Exceptional Leadership! To say that the events of 2020, thus far, are leading us to an exceptional 2020-2021 basketball season is an obvious understatement. Limited work with our players this past spring, virtual learning, adjusted opening dates for schools this fall, daily self-health checks prior to each visit to school, are just a few of the many changes we’ve encountered from the beginning of the pandemic. As COVID-19 remains a challenge for all of us, we must navigate through the new school year with different approaches and a positive attitude. Our student-athletes need our leadership as we move forward toward this basketball season. Coaches will have to lead through a season with no tournaments, often earlier start dates for district play, and God forbid, dealing with the possibility of players and coaches absent due to illness. 5A & 6A coaches will need to set examples on how to mold a team that may be missing both players and coaches for a month, or more, as both the football & volleyball seasons start a month later with no commiserate late start for basketball. Basketball coaches are leaders in the community, in their schools, and most importantly, for their young men and women in their program. Your leadership as a Texas basketball coach, while dealing with any cir- cumstances which we may encounter this season, will define the experience for your athletes and parents dur- ing this basketball season. Let’s make the 2020-2021 season exceptional!! I wish you, your family, and your school community the best of luck. Stay well. Best swishes, Mike Carrabine, TABC President On Wednesday, August 12, TABC president Mike Carrabine and 1st VP Angela Spurlock, along with TABC assistant directors Hawk Carter and Bob Wall met via Zoom with Dr. Susan Elza, Brandy Belk and Joseph Garmon of the UIL Athletic staff. Below is information and some rationale that came out of the meeting. • Fall sports schedules have been adjusted by classification based on the percentage of schools located in counties that have mandated restrictions on public contact. • At this time, the UIL is trying to keep winter and spring schedules intact with state tournaments/championships be- ing played at their normal times. • Invitational basketball tournaments have been eliminated this year to reduce contact from large numbers of teams gathering at one site. In exchange, the maximum number of games was increased from 21 to 27. Since the regional tournaments were eliminated for this season, the playoffs will need one additional playing date to finish prior to the state tournament. For that reason the district certification dates were moved to February 9 (from February 13) for girls and to February 16 (from February 20) for boys. • Teams will be allowed to play three games per calendar week this season as long as only one of those games is played during the school week (on a night preceding a school day.) (Many schools are scheduling regular Tuesday and Friday games and leaving the Saturday playing date open to accommodate make up games that may have been previously postponed due to a COVID-19 situation.) • Decisions on whether games are cancelled or made up is left to the District Executive Committees (DEC). • Crowd size is limited to no more than 50% of capacity and procedures for administering local mandates are left up to the host schools. • The number of playoff qualifiers in each class will remain the same as it has been unless circumstances force a re- duction. • If a school choses to cancel all or part of its season, all existing eligibility, transfer and residency rules still apply to its team members if they want to try to play for another school. • The girls and boys state tournaments will still take place on the first and second week- ends in March, and the size of the Alamodome will enable fans to attend and still follow local safety mandates.
