These reflections in Yukio Mishima's The Temple of Dawn pertain to its main character, Honda, the "Western Japanese" lawyer who, looking back at his life, comes to "realize that what had permitted him to live the way he had was the strength of Western thought, imported from the outside" (25). The Temple of Dawn, the third novel in Mishima's tetralogy The Sea of Fertility, is a novel about the cultural contact between East and West in this century which Mishima traces from a Tokyo in 1912, with its decline of the ancient aristocracy and the emer- gence of a new elite of rich provincial families, to the late sixties, the last years of his own life. Mediated through Honda's relation- ships with Kiyoaki Matsugae and later with Isao, the young patriot for the Emperor's Japan who until his premature death through seppuku uncompromisingly clings to the purity of traditional Jap- anese culture, the text also probes the "question of an unadul- terated Japan" (25).

Helsinki 2015 ISBN 978-951-51-1472-3 (paperback) ISBN 978-951-51-1473-0 (PDF) Unigrafia Helsinki 2015 ABSTRACT Japanese literature in English translation has a history of 165 years, but it was not until after the hostilities of World War II ceased that any single publisher outside Japan put out a sustained series of novel-length translations. The New York house of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. published thirty-four titles of Japanese literature in English translation in hardcover between the years 1955 to 1977. This “Program,” as it came to be called, was carried out under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Harold Strauss (1907-1975), who endeavored to bring the then-active modern writers of Japan to the stage of world literature. Strauss and most of the translators who made this Program possible were trained in military language schools during World War II. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the publisher’s policies and publishing criteria in the selection of texts, the actors involved in the mediation process and the preparation of the texts for market, the reception of the texts and their impact on the resulting translation profile of Japanese literature in America, England and elsewhere.

    3 THE SEA OF FERTILITY, by Yukio Mishima Mary Ryan Yukio Mishima's tetralogy*, The Sea of Fertility, offers Westerners a cultural and historical view of Japan lll the b1entieth century that is probably unobtainable elsewhere, except through scholarly study. This series traces the development of modern Japan from 1912 through the late 1960's. Each novel concentrates on a different era and crises in the history of that country. Yet through­ out unification is achieved not merely through chronology. Mishima ciscusses the cultural conflicts between old imperial Japan and modern westernized Japan through his characters: Kiyoaki's alternate attraction to and rejection of the aristocracy in the person of Satoka; Isao's assassination coup against the rising industrial elite; and Honda's inner philosophical/sensual dichotomy. Uniting all is the Buddhist philosophy of reincarnation. These novels intertwine so many concepts, symbols, and dreams that it is impossible to render anything but a bare sketch of the themes an<~ characters. In Spring Snmv (my personal favorite) one is introduced to Kiyoaki Matsugae, son of a "noveau richc" samurai family; Satoka Ayakuras, daughter of an old but declining noble family, and to Shigekuni Honda, the narrator, member of a middle class family, and ~onfidant of Kiyoaki. Kiyoaki is raised by the Ayakuras to forward his family's prestige. This is the basis of his alternately loving and hating relationship with Satoka. Not until her engagement to a prince is announced does Kiyoaki realize the extent of his passion. They have an intense, doomed affair that form~ a link through the tetralogy.

There are primarily three different levels to the analysis: philosophical, psychological and moral/political, to each of which a chapter is devoted. In the treatment of each of these "levels" the focus is not merely on the nihilism per se but on the aesthetic consequen• ces of the nihilism in Mishima's art of fiction.

In , the new Constitution resulted in the sudden resolution of a lawsuit filed in , as a result of which Honda earned a 36,, yen fee for a single case. He uses part of this money to buy the property, which overlooks Mount Fuji. In the same year he won the case, he rediscovered in an antique shop owned by Prince Toin the emerald ring that the Thai prince, Chao P. At a housewarming party, two pseudo-artistic friends of Honda's are introduced: Mrs Tsubakihara, a mournful poetry student under Makiko Kito who perjured herself for Isao's sake in Runaway Horses , and Yasushi Imanishi, a specialist in German literature who is obsessed with elaborate sadomasochistic sexual fantasies set in his imagined utopian nation, "The Land of the Pomegranate". Many other guests arrive, in scenes which represent Mishima's caricature of post-war Japan; to Honda's disappointment, Ying Chan, another invitee who is now a student in Japan, does not turn up. During the night, Honda peeks into the guest room and is shocked to see Imanishi and Tsubakihara having sex while Makiko watches. This is the first indication of Honda's voyeuristic tendencies which are intended to be emblematic of his approach to the world. The next day they visit the shrine of Mount Fuji; the day after, Honda learns from Keiko that Ying Chan turned up at his house a day late.
