  • Conclusion: What Might a War Film Look Like Going Forward?
CONCLUSION: WHAT MIGHT A WAR FILM LOOK LIKE GOING FORWARD? This text began from a broad perspective that was very much in line with Kellner’s understanding of the power of cinema: Films can also provide allegorical representations that interpret, comment on, and indirectly portray aspects of an era. Further there is an aesthetic, philosophical, and anticipatory dimension to flm, in which they provide artistic visions of the world that might transcend the social context of the moment and articulate future possibilities, positive and negative, and pro- vide insight into the nature of human beings, social relationships, institu- tions, and conficts of a given era. (14) From this point of view, this book considered the movies that it ana- lyzed within the technological and military “eras” they were made and frst viewed within, and considered the ways in which the war flm most often undermined the potential cooperative power of Internet-enabled machine species with a continued focus on the humanistic ethics laid out by Jeffords’ Reagan-era hard body. The “insight” the movies provided reifed the fears and concerns found in the moviemaking machinic phy- lum of Hollywood and its overlap with the American State War Machine, all the while deconstructing the documents as windows into “the nature of human beings, social relationships, institutions, and conficts” as it related to the civilian machinic audience of war flms. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2017 229 A. Tucker, Virtual Weaponry, DOI 10.1007/978-3-319-60198-4 230 CONCLUSION: What MIGHT A WAR FILM LOOK LIKE GOING FOrwarD? This book is being published with the knowledge that, like Interfacing with the Internet in Popular Cinema, it is far from compre- hensive and with the hope that other scholars might pick up some of the initial or underdeveloped thoughts that were begun with this text.

  • Korean Demilitarized Zone the Korean
Middle States Geographer, 2009, 42: 100-106 CINEMATIC REPRESENTATIONS OF LANDSCAPE: THE (REEL) KOREAN DEMILITARIZED ZONE Chris Fuhriman Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering United States Military Academy West Point, NY 10996 ABSTRACT: Much more than an artificial border etched into the landscape by conflict, the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a complex, unique space which has gone largely unexplored (literally and conceptually) since its establishment in 1953. This paper provides a cultural geography of the Korean DMZ as expressed through two American films and one South Korean film. The analysis explores the cultural meanings and dominant ideologies that shape these differing cinematic representations of the same landscape, and examines the ways these big screen images in turn reinforce the meanings and ideologies which formed them. In the American films, Stealth (2005) and Die Another Day (2002), the dominant discourse effectively marginalizes the landscape of the DMZ, and by extension, North Koreans. In the South Korean film, JSA (2000), the audience sees a landscape without boundaries, where the differences between North and South Koreans (like the border between them) have disappeared. This paper argues that in the sum of these contrasting cinematic place-images a sense of place emerges. Keywords: Landscape, Space and place, Cinema, Korea, Demilitarized zone THE KOREAN DMZ: FINDING REAL MEANING IN A REEL LANDSCAPE On July 27, 1953 General Mark W. Clark of the United States Army, Kim Il Sung of North Korea, and Peng Teh-huai of the Chinese Volunteers signed the armistice agreement, formally ceasing all combat operations of the Korean War which had devastated the Korean countryside and urban centers for three years (Fehrenbach, 1998).

  • SHANE HURLBUT, ASC Director of Photography
SHANE HURLBUT, ASC Director of Photography BIO Shane Hurlbut, ASC is a member of the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The American Society of Cinematographers recognized Hurlbut after his first feature film, The Rat Pack (1998), depicting Frank Sinatra and his infamous friends at the height of their influence, directed by Rob Cohen. Consequently, Hurlbut was the youngest cinematographer to be nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers for his work on The Rat Pack. He was also nominated by the DVDX Awards in 2003 for his work on 11:14. Hurlbut's films have garnered universal acclaim. His work behind the camera is ever-growing and redefining what it means to be a DoP in the industry. He got his start back in the 90s, working with musicians who defined music in the decade, and therefore, Hurlbut defined their visual tone of the era. He is known for Guns N' Roses' November Rain, as well as working with Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, The Rolling Stones, and Nirvana. Hurlbut's versatility as a cinematographer transcends any one genre. He's filmed action, sports, drama, and comedy - but it's his attention to story and character that is always at the heart of his arresting visuals. It is Hurlbut's subtlety and creativity with lighting that defines the sheer beauty and atmosphere in his work. The emotion he brings to the movement of the camera, like a dance, walks in line with the character's journey. COMMERCIAL & MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTORS McG, Maurice Marable,

  • 28 Days Later
28 Days Later Dir: Danny Boyle, Netherlands/UK/USA, 2002 A review by Elizabeth Rosen, University College London, UK Given the rightfully vicious response to their last project, The Beach (2000), one would think that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland would hesitate before working together again. Fortunately, they didn't, and the result, 28 Days Later, is one of the best horror films to come out in years. This is not to say that the film doesn't have glitches; it does. But 28 Days Later is an ambitious film which, like the best of its genre, leaves its audience thinking as well as cowering. The film opens with a montage of violent riot footage culled from television newscasts. When the camera pulls back to reveal a chimpanzee strapped down and forced to watch these scenes repeatedly as part of a scientific experiment, the viewer may find himself squirming, not merely because of the ethics of the science, but also because he is the chimpanzee, as well. This subtle moment of self-reference resurfaces later in the form of questions about man's "animal" nature and Darwinian notions of survival, but here it serves first as background. The chimps in this lab are infected with a highly contagious virus called "Rage", and when well meaning animal activists free one of the infected animals, all hell breaks loose. Twenty-eight days later, bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes from a coma to discover that the virus has wiped out the population of England, and seemingly the world. Or almost wiped out.
