DOWNING POINT designated Monument of National Importance Most Dalgety Bay residents will be aware of the coastal promontory called Downing Point with its commanding view over the Forth estuary. Many will not know that because of this view it was chosen in 1914 to be the site of a two gun battery forming part of the inner defences of the seaward approach to the of Forth. This also incorporated two searchlights that would have been located on the concrete blocks at the tip of the Downing Point and Donibristle Bay promontory. Last year Historic Environment (HES) carried out a review of structures that are connected to the First World War within Scotland and this included Downing Point. The aim was to identify which of the sites met the criteria for designation, either scheduled as monuments of national importance or listed as buildings of special architectural or historic interest. The decision to designate the Downing Point site as a scheduled monument of national importance was because of the part it played, along with other similar sites, in the defence of the Fife coast and the Royal Naval Dockyard at Rosyth. Adjacent to the battery and included in the designation is Bathing House wood. It Two Gun Battery was here that men of the Royal Engineers, Infantry and Forth Royal Garrison Artillery that manned the battery and searchlights had accommodation blocks and other supporting buildings. In 2015 the Dalgety Bay Community Woodlands Group that manages the woodlands arranged for trees to be planted by Donibristle Primary school pupils to commemorate the soldiers who fell in WW1. Colonel Jim Kinloch, the Chairman of the Royal Artillery Association Scottish Region, and the Honorary Colonel of the 105th Regiment Royal Artillery attended this event along with serving and veteran members of the regiment. Following the planting, Colonel Kinloch spoke to the children about the sacrifices made by WW1 soldiers and answered pupils’ questions including the identification of a WW1 belt buckle uncovered by one pupil during the planting. Our lead story on the front page this month is the result of the hard work of members of DBCWG exposing the gun emplacements on Downing Point from under the tangle of brambles and nettles. There is much to read via the links provided on page one about this part of our town and the role it played in the two wars long before Dalgety Bay existed. And speaking of that time, the view of Downing Point gives me the shivers when I recall the time (many years ago) when, as Boy Scouts from Leith on a weekend camp, we had to dash between waves to reach the point. That night we slept in an underground air raid shelter at the edge of Donibristle runway because the storm was giving our leaders cause for concern over the safety of our tents. 7 Robert Jones from Colinton Garden Club in Edinburgh will give us his presentation based on his visits to the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. I believe Robert is pretty good with his camera so we will look forward to some good photographs. Robert is coming in place of the advertised speaker, who had to call off. The meeting will be held on Friday 4th May 2018. Petticoats and Plants, the untold story of Scotland’s gardening women was the subject of our April meeting. Deborah Reid gave us a concise and excellent talk on the history of women in gardening. They had a hard time. It was a really well presented social history and was very well received. Did you know that Dalgety Bay Horticultural Society (DBHS) provides meetings every month of the year, usually with a guest speaker, followed by light refreshments and a raffle? DBHS holds meetings on the first Friday of each month at 7:30pm in Dalgety Bay Community Centre. You are welcome to come along to our meetings and, who knows, you may be convinced to join us. Alternatively go to our website at www.dbhs.org, click on downloads, then membership form, fill it in then send it back. Membership is good value at £4.
