www.dalgetybay.org.uk NEWSLETTERNEWSLETTER MAY 2018 DOWNING POINT designated Monument of National Importance Most Dalgety Bay residents will be aware of the coastal promontory called Downing Point with its commanding view over the Forth estuary. Many will not know that because of this view it was chosen in 1914 to be the site of a two gun battery forming part of the inner defences of the seaward approach to the Firth of Forth. This also incorporated two searchlights that would have been located on the concrete blocks at the tip of the Downing Point and Donibristle Bay promontory. Last year Historic Environment Scotland (HES) carried out a review of structures that are connected to the First World War within Scotland and this included Downing Point. The aim was to identify which of the sites met the criteria for designation, either scheduled as monuments of national importance or listed as buildings of special architectural or historic interest. The decision to designate the Downing Point site as a scheduled monument of national importance was because of the part it played, along with other similar sites, in the defence of the Fife coast and the Royal Naval Dockyard at Rosyth. Adjacent to the battery and included in the designation is Bathing House wood. It Two Gun Battery was here that men of the Royal Engineers, Infantry and Forth Royal Garrison Artillery that manned the battery and searchlights had accommodation blocks and other supporting buildings. In 2015 the Dalgety Bay Community Woodlands Group that manages the woodlands arranged for trees to be planted by Donibristle Primary school pupils to commemorate the soldiers who fell in WW1. Colonel Jim Kinloch, the Chairman of the Royal Artillery Association Scottish Region, and the Honorary Colonel of the 105th Regiment Royal Artillery attended this event along with serving and veteran members of the regiment. Following the planting, Colonel Kinloch spoke to the children about the sacrifices made by WW1 soldiers and answered pupils’ questions including the identification of a WW1 belt buckle uncovered by one pupil during the planting.
