An updated checklist of the water beetles of Montenegro (Co- leoptera, Hydradephaga). Spixiana 39 (2): 205-212. During a short collecting trip to Montenegro in 2014, 26 locations were sampled and 692 specimens belonging to 45 species of water beetles were collected. The following species are recorded for the first time from Montenegro: Haliplus dal- matinus J. Müller, 1900, Haliplus heydeni Wehncke, 1875, Haliplus laminatus (Schaller, 1783), Hydroporus erythrocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758), Hyphydrus anatolicus (Guignot, 1957), Melanodytes pustulatus (Rossi, 1792) and Rhantus bistriatus (Bergsträsser, 1778). The addition of these seven species brings the total of Hydradephaga known from Montenegro to 91 species. The new records are presented and an updated checklist of the Hydradephaga of Montenegro is given. Species keys and notes on identification are provided for adults of species that occur or may occur in Wisconsin. Information on distribution and abundance in Wisconsin, habitat, and life cycle is provided for each species based on a study of 27,310 adults. -

MÜLLER) (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae, Hydroporinae) H.SHAVERDO Abstract The first-, second-, and third-instar larvae of Hydroporus rufìfrons (O.F. MÜLLER, 1776) are described and illustrated. Except for the third-instar larvae, which were collected, the larvae used in this study were reared ex ovo from adults. Larvae of H. rufìfrons are characterized by large size and monotonous dark coloration. Data on biology and distribution of the species are given. Key words: Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Hydroporus, larvae, description. Introduction The genus Hydroporus CLAIRVILLE is one of the largest genera within Dytiscidae and includes about 75 species in Europe. The representatives of the genus are the most common and numerous inhabitants of a wide variety of waters. However, larval morphology of species of Hydroporus is still in need of research. The third-instar larvae of 33 species of Hydroporus were examined by BERTRAND (1928, 1931, 1933, 1972), JEPPESEN (1986), NILSSON (1986, 1987a), NILSSON & CARR (1989), and an identification key of 27 species was proposed by NILSSON (1989). However, morphology of first- and second-instar larvae has been studied for only five species: H. morio AUBE, H. palustris (L.), H. tristis (PAYKULL), H striola (GYLLENHAL), H fuscipennis SCHAUM (BERTRAND 1928, JEPPESEN 1986, ALARIE 1991, SHAVERDO 1999). -
Hydroporus Macedonicus Nov. Spec., a New Member of the Hydroporus Planus-Group (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae)

PESIC A b s t r a c t: Hydroporus macedonicus nov. spec. is described from the Kožuf mountains in the southern part of the Republic of Macedonia. The species belongs to the Hydroporus planus-group, but its broad and stout habitus resembles at first glance that of members of other groups, e. g. such as Hydroporus kraatzii SCHAUM 1867. Further external characters as well as molecular data show, however, that the new species is related to south-eastern European populations of Hydroporus discretus FAIRMAIRE & BRISOUT 1859. One of its characteristic features are the brownish latero- basal areas on the black elytra, a pattern which occurs also in other populations of H. discretus of which two have already been described: Hydroporus discretus ab. woerndlei ZIMMERMANN 1919 and Hydroporus discretus tatricus KINEL 1949. Introduction During a collecting trip through the southern part of the Republic of Macedonia in July 2004 the junior author found two males of Hydroporus CLAIRVILLE 1806, which could not be attributed to any known species. On the other hand the species can easily be iden- tified as belonging to the Hydroporus planus-[or fuscipennis-]group, although - due to the broad and stout habitus - it resembles at first glance Hydroporus kraatzii SCHAUM 1867 or even Hydroporus lundbladi (FALKENSTRÖM 1938). -

Frequent discordance between morphology and mitochondrial DNA in a species group of European water beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) David T. Bilton1, Lucy Turner1 and Garth N. Foster2 1 Marine Biology & Ecology Research Centre, University of Plymouth, Plymouth, United Kingdom 2 Aquatic Coleoptera Conservation Trust, Ayr, Scotland ABSTRACT The Hydroporus memnonius species group includes both widespread and range re- stricted diving beetle taxa in the western Palaearctic, some of which have been divided into a number of geographical subspecies. Of these, Hydroporus necopinatus is distributed in the far west of Europe, from central Spain to southern Britain, and has been split into three subspecies, occurring in Iberia (necopinatus sst.), France (robertorum) and England (roni) respectively—the last of these being a rare example of an insect taxon apparently endemic to northern Europe. Here we explore inter- relationships between populations and subspecies of H. necopinatus and related mem- bers of the Hydroporus melanarius subgroup, using mitochondrial COI sequence data. We reveal widespread discordance between mitochondrial DNA sequence variation and morphology in areas where H. necopinatus and H. melanarius come into contact, consistent with historical introgressive hybridization between these taxa. In light of this discordance, the lack of clear genetic divergence between H. necopinatus subspecies, and the fact that both robertorum and roni are morphologically intermediate between H. necopinatus sstr. and H. melanarius, we suggest that these taxa may be of hybrido- genic origin, rather than representing discrete evolutionary lineages. This pool is shown in Fig 4 on p 25 of Latissimus 29. When I removed the abdomen, in colchicine solution in insect saline (for chromosome preparation) what appeared to a mass of tiny bubbles appeared. My first thought was that I had foolishly opened the beetle in alcoholic fixative, but this was disproved when the “bubbles” began swimming around in a manner characteristic of ciliary locomotion. At the time I was not able to do anything with them, but it was something the like of which I had never seen before. Then, as luck would have it, on Tuesday Max Barclay brought back from the Moscow region of Russia a single living male Hydrobius rottenbergii Gerhardt. This time I injected the beetle with colchicine solution and did not open it up (remove the abdomen) till I had transferred it to ½-isotonic potassium chloride. And at this stage again I was confronted with a mass of the same self-propelled “bubbles”. -
Time Period Determination of the Kuril Ainu's Major Withdrawal from Kamchatka
Time period determination of the Kuril Ainu’s major withdrawal from Kamchatka TAKASE Katsunori1 ABSTRACT The Kuril Ainu are the indigenous people of the Northern and Central Kuril Islands. Although Russian documents have suggested that these people also occupied Sothern Kamchatka, the time period and habitation area in Kamchatka have been poorly understood. However, recent archaeological studies have shown that they emerged in the 15th century AD and occupied not only the Kuril Islands but also a wide area of Southern Kamchatka. Moreover, such studies have indicated that their habitation area in Kamchatka rapidly decreased from the mid-17th to 18th centuries AD. Because the precise time period of their departure remains to be revealed, the present study determines when the Kuril Ainu withdrew from Kamchatka, based on new materials collected from Southeastern Kamchatka. According to the results, the Kuril Ainu’s habitation area in Kamchatka rapidly decreased in the early 18th century AD. During that time, the northern boundary of the Kuril Ainu’s habitation area on the east coast of the peninsula shifted 350 km south from Kronotsky Bay to Vestnik Bay, whereas there was no significant change on the west coast. Introduction The Kuril Ainu are regarded as the indigenous people of the Northern and Central Kuril Islands, according to the Japanese documents recorded in the late 18th and 19th centuries AD (e.g. Torii 1903, 1919). However, Russian documents from the late 17th to mid-18th centuries AD have shown that they inhabited not only the Kuril Islands but also the Southern Kamchatka (Krasheninnikov 1755; Steller 1774; Ogloblin 1891).
