MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • A's News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star Outing by Trevor
A’s News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star outing by Trevor Cahill lifts Oakland A's By Joe Stiglich, Contra Costa Times A's starter Trevor Cahill said he's likely to spend his All-Star break logging beach time in his hometown of Oceanside, just outside of San Diego. As things are unfolding, Cahill's agenda could get redirected north to Anaheim. The All-Star Game is at Angel Stadium on July 13, and Cahill is making a bid to represent the A's. He's building a case that's hard to ignore. Cahill limited the Pittsburgh Pirates to two hits over 72/3 innings in a 5-0 victory Saturday night in front of 25,068 fans at the Oakland Coliseum. He struck out a career-high 10 and won his sixth straight decision, giving him the longest winning streak by an A's starting pitcher since Dan Haren won 10 straight from April 18-July 1, 2007. The A's are likely to get just one player named to the All-Star team, and closer Andrew Bailey and catcher Kurt Suzuki figure to get strong consideration, too. Typical of his personality, Cahill (7-2, 2.88 ERA), who less than two months ago was at Triple-A Sacramento, takes a low-key approach about even hearing his name in the discussion. "When I was in Sacramento, I never thought I'd be where I'm at now, or even in consideration," Cahill said. "So just being mentioned, it means a lot. We've got plenty of guys that are good enough to be named All-Stars." The A's were bound to grab attention on 1970s Turn Back The Clock Night, regardless of how they played.

  • A's News Clips, Thursday, March 25, 2010 A's Receive Reliever Edwar Ramirez from Rangers in Trade for Infielder Gregorio Petit
A’s News Clips, Thursday, March 25, 2010 A's receive reliever Edwar Ramirez from Rangers in trade for infielder Gregorio Petit By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune The A's added some insurance for their wounded bullpen Wednesday, trading infielder Gregorio Petit to the Texas Rangers for right-handed reliever Edwar Ramirez. When spring training began, the relief corps was one area that didn't appear to need reinforcements. But closer Andrew Bailey, Michael Wuertz and Craig Breslow all have been slowed by injuries, and Joey Devine has recovered slower than expected after missing all of last season due to elbow surgery. "We obviously were looking for some bullpen depth with injuries and some uncertainties as far as timetables are concerned with those guys," A's assistant GM David Forst said. Ramirez, who turns 29 on Sunday, was in uniform for Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, which ended in a 3-3 tie after nine innings. It was the second time he's been dealt in 15 days. The New York Yankees traded him to Texas on March 9. Ramirez went 6-2 with a 5.22 ERA in 96 games for the Yankees over three seasons. The A's hope his addition is merely precautionary at this point. Bailey, Wuertz and Breslow all should be ready for opening day if they keep progressing at their current pace. Wuertz will make his second exhibition appearance tonight after being bothered by shoulder soreness. Breslow, who has elbow tendinitis, threw from the mound Wednesday and said he hopes to get in a game this weekend.

10 DIVISION I Baseball DIVISION I 2002 Championship Edited by Ty Halpin. Highlights Horns Hook Fifth NCAA Title: Texas won its fifth championship, outlasting South Carolina, 12-6, in the title game June 22. Longhorns skipper Augie Garrido became the first coach to win a Men’s College World Series crown with two different teams. Garrido led Cal State Fullerton to three previous titles. Texas’ other championships came in 1949, 1950, 1975 and 1983. Reliever Huston Street hurled one and two-thirds scoreless innings to pick up a series-record fourth save and win most outstanding player honors. • A's News Clips, Thursday, May 6, 2010 Bullpen Comes to Oakland A's
A’s News Clips, Thursday, May 6, 2010 Bullpen comes to Oakland A's rescue against Texas Rangers By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's manager Bob Geren had eight relievers at his disposal, and he wasn't shy about using them. Oakland's bullpen was pressed into heavy duty again Wednesday afternoon, and the unit salted away a 4-1 victory over the Texas Rangers that helped the A's reclaim first place in the American League West. With starter Trevor Cahill exiting in the sixth inning as he neared his pitch limit, Tyson Ross, Brad Ziegler and Andrew Bailey combined to allow just two hits over the final four innings. A night earlier, five relievers handled the final six innings of a 7-6 victory after starter Vin Mazzaro was pulled early. "They all did a heck of a job getting us those two victories," Geren said. The A's took two of three from the Rangers and steadied the ship on the heels of a 1-5 road trip. They enjoy a day off before welcoming the Tampa Bay Rays to the Oakland Coliseum for a three-game set starting Friday. Cahill (1-1) rebounded nicely after allowing three homers against Toronto last Friday. His sinker had the movement that was missing against the Blue Jays. He also benefited from two double-play grounders and, unlike his previous start, pitched well after being handed an early lead. The only run charged to him was unearned and came after he left the game. Cahill was called up from Triple-A Sacramento because of a forearm injury to starter Brett Anderson, and the A's need him to deliver.
