A’s Trade Eric Patterson to Boston for LHP Fabian Williamson

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s traded outfielder Eric Patterson to the Boston Red Sox for minor league lefthanded pitcher Fabian Williamson, the club announced today.

Williamson was 4-3 with a 3.72 ERA in 14 starts for Single-A Salem of the Carolina League. He allowed just three home runs in 65.1 innings and yielded a .242 opponents batting average, including .211 with runners in scoring position. The 21-year old left-hander was originally selected by Seattle in the 22^ndround of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft and was traded to the Red Sox for David Aardsma prior to the 2009 season. Williamson went 10-5 with a 2.42 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 108.0 innings in 28 games, 12 starts, with Single-A Greenville last year. He has a 24-13 record and a 3.17 ERA in 68 career appearances, including 50 starts, in four professional seasons.

Patterson was designated for assignment on Tuesday after batting .204 with four home runs and nine RBI in 45 games with Oakland. He had started just five of the A’s last 34 games and was 5 for 32 (.156) in 18 games total over that span. The 27-year old right-handed hitter was acquired from the Chicago Cubs with Sean Gallagher, Josh Donaldson and Matt Murton for Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin on July 8, 2008 and hit .211 with five home runs and 28 RBI in 114 games with the A’s. Patterson is a .224 career hitter with six home runs, 35 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 134 career games.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

"When I was in Sacramento, I never thought I'd be where I'm at now, or even in consideration," Cahill said. "So just being mentioned, it means a lot. When spring training began, the relief corps was one area that didn't appear to need reinforcements. But closer Andrew Bailey, Michael Wuertz and Craig Breslow all have been slowed by injuries, and Joey Devine has recovered slower than expected after missing all of last season due to elbow surgery. "We obviously were looking for some bullpen depth with injuries and some uncertainties as far as timetables are concerned with those guys," A's assistant GM David Forst said. Ramirez, who turns 29 on Sunday, was in uniform for Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, which ended in a 3-3 tie after nine innings. It was the second time he's been dealt in 15 days. The New York Yankees traded him to Texas on March 9. Ramirez went 6-2 with a 5.22 ERA in 96 games for the Yankees over three seasons. The A's hope his addition is merely precautionary at this point. Bailey, Wuertz and Breslow all should be ready for opening day if they keep progressing at their current pace. Wuertz will make his second exhibition appearance tonight after being bothered by shoulder soreness. Breslow, who has elbow tendinitis, threw from the mound Wednesday and said he hopes to get in a game this weekend.
