And just a week after we returned from New York, we headed to much warmer temperatures of California to do some more buying. PHOTOS: As you can see, there are no photos on this list. Time simply did not permit it. If you want a photo of either a specific item, or one that we have multiples of we will try to provide you with one. At the present time images sent over the internet via email will be gratis, while hard copy photos, scans or xerox copies are $1 per item. We ask that you limit your photo requests to items that sell for $25 or more. Items marked with an * should have images on our web site. Eventually we will have images of all commemoratives, medals and banknotes on our website. ORDERING: Ordering information is on the back of the order blank. If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to ask. Our advertised phone hours are 9 AM to 6 PM during the week, although we are usually here earlier and later and sometimes on the weekends as well. You may call (our machine is always on), Fax or E-Mail us 24 hours a day and we go to our Post Office virtually every day. Most orders are shipped out within 24 hours of receipt of payment. Orders with payment receive preference. If calling and we do not answer, please leave a message. When we are busy writing a catalog ( especially the last two weeks of March 2004) we tend to let our machine screen the phone, so please leave a message and we may even pick up. We will return your call if necessary. Please speak slowly and distinctly when leaving a message. BUYING: We are always looking to buy all worthwhile numismatic items, not only Palestine, Israel and Judaica. If you are thinking of disposing of all or parts of your collection, please contact us. We also need material for our mailbid sales. MAILBID SALES; We hold two mailbid sales each year, one in May and one in November consisting of ancient to modern world wide material, with heavy emphasis on Israel/Palestine/Judaica. Our spring 2004 sale is going to be one of our best including a number of seldom offered ancient Jewish coins, two rare Israel patterns, a nice grouping of Judaic medals and a fine selection of world and ancient coins. We spend much of the months of March and September writing catalogs. During this time our we generally have our phone ringer on for just a few hours a day and during the final week it’s usually off the entire time. However if you leave a message, that we can under- stand, we will return your call. SUBSCRIPTIONS: If you have not ordered from us in the past year, your subscription has expired and a subscription blank is included with this list. If you order from us, you will of course receive future lists. We would much rather sell coins, medals, etc. than subscrip- tions. However to insure receiving future lists, please send us $15 ($25 overseas) to help us keep up with the cost of mailing. Also our lists our now available on-line at www.rosenblumcoins.com at no charge to you. ABOUT THIS LIST: This list is a general stock list and the prices listed replace any and all lists that you may have in your possession. It will be active until our next Israel list in the late winter of 2004. Most gold coins and medals are priced to reflect gold at the $415+ level, which is about 20% more than last year at this time. We have listed items that are in stock in mid-February 2004 or we believe are on the way to us as we speak. Our inventory changes almost daily. Please let us know what you are looking for and we will do our best to find it for you. ANCIENTS: We have listed part of our large inventory of Jewish and Jewish related ancient coins. Others are listed on our world and ancient price list (included), or on our vcoin internet store at www.vcoins.com/rosenblumcoins. At the present time we are listing only ancient and medieval coins there, but eventually we will list modern coins and medals also. WEBSITE: Our website is a place to see new purchases and internet special. If we have your email address, and have it in our email address book (not always one and the same) we have notified you in the past and will continue to notify you in the future of all new cat- alogs. If you would like to be added to the list of people who will get informed about this, please email us. If you don’t want this notifica- tion, you can periodically check our website (Rosenblumcoins.com) to see what’s new. We think you will find our site easy to navigate and we think you will be happy with the speed in which our images appear. The website also contains a secure server for credit card orders. And if you have suggestions of what else you would like to see on our website, please do not hesitate to let us know. We will try to help you if possible, or at least pass on the suggestion to our webmaster who will let us know how feasible it is. • The Empire Strikes: the Growth of Roman Infrastructural Minting Power, 60 B.C
The Empire Strikes: The Growth of Roman Infrastructural Minting Power, 60 B.C. – A.D. 68 A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Classics of the College of Arts and Sciences by David Schwei M.A., University of Cincinnati, December 2012 B.A., Emory University, May 2009 Committee Chairs: Peter van Minnen, Ph.D Barbara Burrell, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Coins permeated the Roman Empire, and they offer a unique perspective into the ability of the Roman state to implement its decisions in Italy and the provinces. This dissertation examines how this ability changed and grew over time, between 60 B.C. and A.D. 68, as seen through coin production. Earlier scholars assumed that the mint at Rome always produced coinage for the entire empire, or they have focused on a sudden change under Augustus. Recent advances in catalogs, documentation of coin hoards, and metallurgical analyses allow a fuller picture to be painted. This dissertation integrates the previously overlooked coinages of Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt with the denarius of the Latin West. In order to measure the development of the Roman state’s infrastructural power, this dissertation combines the anthropological ideal types of hegemonic and territorial empires with the numismatic method of detecting coordinated activity at multiple mints. The Roman state exercised its power over various regions to different extents, and it used its power differently over time. During the Republic, the Roman state had low infrastructural minting capacity.

  • Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus
GRECO-ROMAN CULTURE AND THE GALILEE OF JESUS Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus, the first book- length investigation of this topic, challenges the conventional scholarly view that first-century Galilee was thoroughly Hel- lenized. Examining architecture, inscriptions, coins, and art from Alexander the Great’s conquest until the early fourth century CE, Chancey argues that the extent of Greco-Roman culture in the time of Jesus has often been greatly exaggerated. Antipas’s reign in the early first century was indeed a time of transition, but the more dramatic shifts in Galilee’s cultural climate happened in the second century, after the arrival of a large Roman garrison. Much of Galilee’s Hellenization should thus be understood within the context of its Romanization. Any attempt to understand the Galilean setting of Jesus must recognize the significance of the region’s historical develop- ment as well as how Galilee fits into the larger context of the Roman East. MARK CHANCEY is Assistant Professor in the Deparment of Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University, Dallas. He is author of The Myth of a Gentile Galilee (2002, SNTS Monograph No. 118). society for new testament studies MONOGRAPH SERIES General Editor: John M. Court Recent titles in the series 120. Reading the Markan Transfiguration (Mark 9:1-9) in the Light of Jesus’ Scattering of the Tyrian Baal Coins Bill Domeris Abstract Keywords The transfiguration is found in all three Synoptic Gospels yet Transfiguration remains one of the more puzzling incidents in the life of Jesus. At Baal coins the level of narrative, the event forms the bridge between the Irony Mark’s Gospel Galilean ministry of Jesus and his coming passion and the occasion Temple is bracketed by warnings of his imminent death. The tone is already Bill is a Biblical scholar and a set by Jesus’ ironical comment on ‘taking up one’s cross’. The transfiguration points forward to Jesus’ encounter in the temple and his scattering of the Tyrian Baal-Melkart coins. The radical transformation of Jesus and the responses of Peter and the other disciples in the ensuing debates, as they struggle to make sense of what is happening, furthers the ironical intent of the narrative.
