Host Sabrina Celestin

Sabrina Celestin has been in the business of Media and Communications for the past fourteen years. She received her formal education in Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of and gained her practical experience working in Trinidad and the UK. She has shared her talents with top Media Houses, including CCN TV6 (One Caribbean Media), British Sky Broadcasting, and ESPN (Disney, UK), McCann Port- of-Spain among others. Sabrina’s passion for communications has driven her to ask questions of how we communicate with each other, verbally and nonverbally.

When she is not devising and implementing communication strategies, Sabrina can be found on stage communicating as a jazz singer and actress.

Host Elizabeth Solomon

Elizabeth Solomon describes herself as a Change Agent. She started her working life as a journalist and received seven awards in print, radio and television. Elizabeth was recruited to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. Her work took her to some of the worst and most protracted conflicts in the world and she has focused on supporting local efforts to build resilient democratic national institutions in Kosovo, Bosnia, and Somalia. Her work on human rights and development saw her working in Guyana, and India. Elizabeth also holds degrees in journalism and in law.

She spent several years in the Netherlands where she worked with academic institutions and has held positions at United Nations Headquarters. She is also a certified mediator and was a member of the UN mediation team in the negotiations between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Elizabeth left Cyprus to take up a post as the Peace and Development Adviser in Sierra Leone to support the transition from peacekeeping to a development mandate. With some twenty years experience in peacebuilding, Elizabeth decided to return home to . She is a member of the Mediation Board and the Executive Director of the Caribbean Centre for Human Rights on a voluntary basis. As her day job, Elizabeth is the Executive Director of the Dispute Resolution Centre, which serves the Caribbean.

Deneka Thomas is a 24-year-old Spoken Word Poet, Writer, Teaching Artist, Photographer and an aspiring author with an urgent voice that raises against gender inequality, advocacy for women, encourages self and body image appreciation and exhorts environmental awareness.

Deneka is an Artist and Performer with the Spoken Word Based Company The 2 Cents Movement and a Teaching Artist with the Trinidad and Tobago extension of the Brooklyn Based Theatre company Girl Be Heard.

She is a creator who is bent on questioning the norm and going beyond the status quo. Her writing is a happy marriage of campaigning for women’s rights and a pure fascination of the earth and its ecology. These combine to create her personal brand of ecofeminism. However, her work is a force that challenges and probes everything that concerns existing. She is a Verses Bocas Poetry Slam 2015 Finalist and a First Citizens National Poetry Slam Finalist 2016 and currently developing the manuscript for her first collection of poems.

Performer Chantal Esdelle

Performer Ruth Osman

Trinidad-based Guyanese singer/songwriter and flautist, Ruth Osman, has been performing since childhood. Her passion for music has led to her appearance in a variety of events -from the church stage to national and international concerts.

Over the past decade, she honed her skills in the jazz genre, performing primarily with the jazz trio Jacoustik and then with various musicians and bands. In 2013, she teamed up with producer Jason Dasent to record her debut album, Letting Go.

In November 2016, Ruth worked with producer Keon Jeffrey of Klassic Music Ent. and a_phake of Future Crab Studios to produce her second album, Elemental. The album, dubbed ‘a 10-track gem’ by the Trinidad Guardian, includes collaborations with jazz guitarist Theron Shaw, singer/ songwriter Collis Duranty and saxophonist Courtney Fadlin.

Armed with a BA in English Literature and a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts and Cultural Enterprise Management, Ruth has also developed a writing career as a speechwriter, freelance feature writer and poet. Her poems, when featured in her performances, add another dimension to her music. She now performs alongside pianist Wayne Guerra and percussionist Sheena Richardson, and together they create a musical experience that has been called ‘original’, ‘entrancing’ and ‘intense’. Her inspiration, she says, comes from the desire to “help us connect with each other and with the transcendent beauty of the human experience”.

Performer Kerina Brereton

On April 19th 1981, the world was graced with had the distinct honor of working under Mr. Andre the birth of this bouncing baby, who later became Largen and Ms. Hazel Franco. Here, she became known as Kerina Brereton. Speaker Nadia Huggins

Nadia Huggins is a self-taught visual artist and In 2011, Nadia cofounded the visual arts publication self-employed graphic designer. Speaker Rahanna Juman

Rahanna Juman wants the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to appreciate their natural resources and to understand how these ecosystems support their very existence, especially with the uncertainty being faced with impending climate change. She is currently the acting Deputy Director at the Institute of Marine Affairs, a government funded research institution in Trinidad and Tobago. Rahanna holds a PhD in Zoology from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. She has been conducting applied research on coastal ecosystems in Trinidad and Tobago for the past 20 years and has published a book on Wetlands of Trinidad and Tobago as well as contributed to international journal articles.

As a scientist, Rahanna does not believe her research has value unless it is converted to useful information that can be internalised by all citizens, including decision-makers, resulting in behavioural changes. ‘It must influence the way we do business; our environment should be given consideration in all our activities’. Rahanna went on to complete a Bachelor of Law from the University of London so that she could bridge the gap between science and policy, and make policy more effective. She chaired a Cabinet appointed Steering Committee responsible for developing an Integrated Coastal Zone Management Policy Framework, Strategies and Action Plan for Trinidad and Tobago. She has garnered international experience as a Hubert Humphrey fellow from 2010-2011, a Watson International Scholars of the Environment Fellow (2008), an American Fellow (2006) and a UNESCO/ L’OREAL Fellow (2002).

Rahanna not only loves mangroves, but she loves to cook and take care of her family, especially her niece-Annissa and her chiwawa-Simba.

Speaker Rudylynn Roberts

Rudylynn De Four Roberts attended Howard University in Washington DC., where she obtained a Bachelor of Architecture in 1974. She is a Past President and Fellow of the Trinidad and Tobago Institute of Architects and is a registered Architect in Trinidad and Tobago.

Her first love is for Historic Restoration and she has devoted much of her life to restoring historic buildings and lobbying for the preservation of the built Heritage in Trinidad and Tobago. Rudylynn established and served as the Head of the Trinidad and Tobago’s Government Historic Restoration Unit for twelve years, before starting her own private architectural practice, De Four, Farmer and Associates Ltd and now Rudylynn Roberts Architects Ltd.

As a founding member of Citizens for Conservation she was actively involved in researching and drafting The National Trust Act of Trinidad and Tobago and was a member of the Trust’s first two Executive Councils. She is also the President of The International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Trinidad and Tobago.

Her experience in the Field of Preservation allowed her to serve on several Government committees in various administrations, such as the Queen’s Park Savannah Management Committee, Archaeology committee, Restoration action Committee, and represent her country at several conferences and symposia, delivering lectures and networking for the heritage preservation movement.

Speaker Felicia Chang

In our increasingly globalised and transient world, Felicia Chang explores how a better understanding of our past can help us build more compassionate and connected global communities.

Felicia studied Biology, Chemistry and Anthropology at the University of and holds an MSc in International Health with tropED certification from various institutes in Europe. It was while researching female sexual health in Ethiopia, that she realised how important it was to examine our behaviour within the context of culture and history. She also noticed how the sharing of stories allowed people to connect in ways no other social device could.

When she returned to Trinidad in 2012, she co-founded Plantain, a company that aims to inspire everyone to want to tell their story. The company sets out to connect people to each other and to their past by interweaving oral histories with historical and genealogical research, and making this accessible through beautiful design. To date, the stories collected connect the Caribbean to North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, West Africa, Latin America and the UK. In 2015, spurred by an innovation grant they were awarded, she began to explore how technology could be used to engage an even wider audience.

Speaker Asiya Mohammed

As a child, Asiya S. Mohammed was always passionate about helping others less fortunate than her. This led her to work with UNICEF, USAID and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she represented Trinidad and Tobago at the United Nations General Assembly on issues related to gender, human rights, and peace and security.

In 2014, she founded Conflict Women, Ltd., a social business which provides free training and a monthly income to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in exchange for their hand crafted jewelry. To date Conflict Women has won the Idea2Innovation competition and the 1776 Challenge Cup Caribbean, and was selected as a grant recipient by PSI Caribbean.

Asiya Mohammed is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. She was also a recipient for the Young Female Leader Award in 2016 by the Association of Female Executives of Trinidad and Tobago and continues to persist despite the challenges she encounters on the entrepreneurial journey.

In her downtime, Asiya enjoys meditation, boats, yoga and nature.

Speaker Vanessa Stewart

“There is a difference between living and simply being alive”. This simple lesson helped her through her husband’s short terminal illness.

She attended Bishop Anstey High School for seven years from the age of 11 years. This she regards as the first step in her becoming socially and environmentally aware, and conscious of a need to contribute to a better society.

Vanessa Stewart completed her basic medical training at UWI in Jamaica and her specialist paediatric training in the and returned home to work in public medicine until she eventually became Head of Department at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at General Hospital where she remained until retirement in 2015.

During her time on the Neonatal Service, she was responsible for training and mentoring many individuals and more importantly, counseling parents through the difficult period of having a very ill baby. She has served on the Adoption Board of Trinidad and Tobago and is currently on the Board of The Breast Feeding Association of Trinidad and Tobago.

Her current passion is to guide the initiation of Human Breast Milk Banking in Trinidad and Tobago in order to ensure better rate and quality of survival of sick preterm infants.

Speaker Shamla Maharaj

Shamla Maharaj is a young lady who is extremely in tune with reality. This is very apparent with her ability to converse on any topic, with persons of varying characteristics, and shows the dexterity of her brilliance. Shamla is very serious when it comes to the personal and overall development of both herself and society. Her wit and charisma underlies a wonderfully gifted sense of humour, emanating from a deep and humble soul. Despite her disability, she is still able to embrace and spread laughter. Her independence is her passion, and her character and reputation are her precious gems.

Miss Maharaj is the Managing Director of Recommended Solutions Consultancy Services (RSCS). Shamla was a former employee at Saudia Holdings Ltd, with prior experience as a Research Assistant I at the National Agricultural Marketing and Development Corporation (NAMDEVCO).

Shamla earned a MSc. in Marketing and Agribusiness (Business and Marketing Analysis Specialization). She also holds a BSc. in Agribusiness Management from the University of the West Indies, and a Certificate in Fundamentals of Marketing from the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business. She is currently pursuing an MPHIL in Agricultural Economics which she intends to upgrade to a PhD, specializing in Marketing and Agribusiness.

Speaker Shamla Maharaj (cont’d)

With experience beyond the agribusiness sector, Shamla has sat on the Advisory Council Board for the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development. She also served as Social Ambassador and Social Motivator for the Ministry of Social Development, whereby she put forward ideas, presentations, and plans for Persons with Disabilities. Miss Maharaj represented Trinidad and Tobago at UNESCO’s 8th World Youth Forum in Paris, France. She was invited and funded by UNESCO to be one of the six (6) delegates, which included UNESCO’s Director General Irina Bokova, to be an opening speaker in 2013. She also contributed to the debate that made it into the introduction of the final recommendation of the theme “Social Inclusion, Civic Engagement, Dialogue and Skills Development”, to be presented at their General Conference.

Shamla also represented youth as a Social Ambassador at UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations (MOST) conference for Latin American and Caribbean countries, at Hilton Trinidad in 2012. The paper she presented was published by UNESCO. She attained Trinidad Express’ Youth Individual of the Year 2010, and was chosen as a National Patriot for Trinidad and Tobago by the Ministry of Diversity and Social Integration in 2013. Shamla is the Co-Author of Journeys to Success: 20 Empowering Stories Inspired by The Principles of Napoleon Hill. The name of her Chapter is “Unstoppable Journey”.

It is instructive to note that Shamla was born with Cerebral Palsy, but has never allowed this challenge to deter her. She is insistent about proving to T&T that a person with a disability can live a full life once the opportunity is created, as she has done with the unswerving support of her family. Being a motivator and advocate, Shamla has left positive impressions on institutions and minds with whom she has interacted, and her plan is to continue doing so.

Speaker Cleopatra Borel

What is behind the personality which selects as a sport? Here are some other facts to add to the paradox; Female shot putter; from a rural village; from a national population of 1.3 million persons. What makes this person imagine their success and go on to achieve it?

Cleopatra Borel is a female shot putter from Mayaro, Trinidad & Tobago. She is a 4 time Olympian and five time winner of the First Citizens Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year. She is Trinidad & Tobago’s first female gold medalist, and regularly features on the IAAF Diamond League Circuit. She has also achieved medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games. Her most important accomplishment to date has been her 7th place at the Summer 2016 Olympic Games in , Brazil.

Cleopatra easily qualifies as being one of the most enduring and widely competitive female athletes from Trinidad and Tobago.

Cleopatra has also maintained a balance between her sports career and her academia by successfully completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Health Psychology at the University of Maryland County (UMBC), and her Master’s Degree in Education from .

Speaker Ingrid Lashley

Ingrid Lashley is the former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Trinidad and Tobago Mortgage Finance Company Limited (TTMF). Prior to joining TTMF, Ingrid spent eighteen (18) years at Scotiabank in various senior positions in financial control, private banking, trusteeships and merchant banking, exiting as the General Manager of Scotiatrust and Merchant Bank Trinidad and Tobago Limited.

Ms. Lashley is the holder of a Masters in Business Administration in Accounting and Finance from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and also carries the designations of Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and Chartered Accountant. Ingrid is currently the Chairman of the Bourse Group and National Enterprises Limited, in which capacity she sits on the Boards of the Investee Companies. She also holds directorships in Eco-Industrial Development Company of Tobago Limited, West Indian Tobacco Company Limited and the CL Financial Group. Ms. Lashley serves as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Trinidad and Tobago.

Despite her demanding professional life, Ingrid finds time for involvement in the culture and social life of Trinidad and Tobago and the Board of Management of her alma mater, Bishop Anstey High School. She is an accomplished bass pan player and a former Inter-Bank calypso queen. Ingrid also holds credentials in piano and dance.

24 What is love?

Our ideas and our definitions of love as human beings are as diverse as the colours of our skin. There is no doubt though, that this concept that seemingly eludes definition is one that is a fundamental part of our existence on this planet and affects the way we see the world and the way we see each other. Our definitions of love are shaped by the way we grow up, family life and values, pleasant as well as unpleasant experiences etc. Ultimately, I believe we spend most of our lives searching for love in the way that we choose to define it. In the end there is no such thing as the perfect love story... love is what we create it/make it to be.

There is finding and losing. Leaving and praying... staying and being. Sacrificing bits of your heart for the sake of others. Closing your eyes to the imperfections in others so that you can open your eyes each day with a renewed sense of the purpose of your togetherness.

25 The Caribbean And The Right To Memory

As we are discovering every day, with an increasingly elderly population succumbing to Alzheimer’s, when we lose memory we lose what makes us who we are.

The ancestors of the majority of the Caribbean population were brought to the region against their will and their traditions and culture was systematically repressed, whether it was the banning of the drum or traditional religions. These strictures were assaults on our very sense of self. Through incredible strength of resistance, through existential need, we devised strategies to preserve what we could through storytelling and improvisation.

These strategies depend on oral transmission for survival. The coming of video, however, presented an ideal opportunity to record and preserve our traditions and cultural practices. Nevertheless generations have grown up knowing next to nothing of their own traditions and history while being familiar with those of colonial and neo-colonial societies.

26 The science of science communication, and how we get it wrong

From the early days of philosophy we see reference and reverence towards the environment. Greek philosophers of Plato and Aristotle reflect concerns of the effects of human population on the physical environment and from then saw how our actions create imbalances which we are all forced to pay for. Yet, despite clarity from the most brilliant of times past, great empires have fallen due to environmental degradation. Why don’t we listen to our experts and great minds when they speak changes to come? This session will discuss why societies don’t listen to our environmental experts, and why now, the communication of science is as important as the science itself.

TEDActive brings together a unique community to share a week of watching the live simulcast of the TED Conference in a creative, casual setting. The gathering is full of surprising, unforgettable experiences to inspire conversation and action around ideas.

Other TED events

TED also regularly hosts other special events around the globe. TEDIndia was held in November 2009 in Mysore, celebrating and exploring the beckoning future of South Asia. TEDWomen was held in 2010 in Washington, DC, and again in 2013 in San Francisco, asking the question, how are women and girls reshaping the future? TEDYouth was held in New York City in 2011 and 2012, and in New Orleans in 2013, with short talks designed to stimulate the curiosity of students. TEDCity2.0, powered by the 2012 TED Prize, presented a day of new thinking about urban life.
