It was his 20th career NHL shutout and is his first career- win over the Bruins (0-5-0 entering tonight’s game). • It is Minnesota’s first shutout of the season and is the first time this season in which the Bruins have failed to score a goal. • It is the fourth Wild shutout over the Bruins in the lifetime series between these teams and is their second in Boston. • The 5-0 loss is the largest shutout margin vs. the Bruins since a 6-0 loss at Buffalo on Feb. 8, 2012 ... Maines Veterans Memorial Arena by a score of 4-2. Wayne Simpson, Jordan Szwarz, Mark Naclerio and Alex Grant scored for Providence, while Malcolm Subban contributed with 38 saves on 40 shots in the victory. Wayne Simpson kicked off the scoring just 3:12 into the first period, slipping the puck past Senators Goaltender Chris Driedger to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead. Assisting on the goal was forward Anton Blidh and defenseman Rob O’Gara. Despite the strong start from Providence the first period featured even play from both sides, with each team registering 12 shots in the frame. In addition to matching fighting majors delivered to Providence’s Tyler Randell and Binghamton’s Guillaume Lepine, the only other penalty came late in the period. Binghamton’s Kyle Flanagan was whistled for holding at 17:16 in the period, giving Providence a power play opportunity that proved unsuccessful. The Senators came out strong in the second, looking to tie the score in front of the home crowd. At 5:37 they did just that when Casey Bailey tallied his fourth of the season, assisted by Rumble and Englund, to knot the score at 1-1. Binghamton had a prime opportunity to take the lead just minutes later, when P-Bruins defenseman Alex Grant was called for Hooking at 9:19. The Senators opportunity proved to be short-lived however, after Jordan Szwarz slipped a pass from Tyler Randell into the net for a short-handed goal and a 2-1 Providence lead.

There’s a construction site across the street from the team’s arena, where Sabres owner Terry Pegula’s HarborCenter hotel and entertainment complex is being erected. Then there’s the major overhaul the Sabres themselves have been undergoing over the past eight months. They’re both works in progress, and also reflect the potential of a brighter future in Buffalo. “I would say it’s a good correlation and analogy,” Rolston said. “It’s both out front and in the arena.” Rolston is part of the Sabres’ transformation in replacing longtime coach Lindy Ruff, who was fired in February. The changes didn’t end there during what became a tumultuous, lockout- shortened season that ended with Buffalo missing the playoffs for the fourth time in six years. Before the season was over, the Sabres purged much of their old guard — including captain Jason Pominville — as part of a youth movement to shake up what had been an aging, high-priced and under-achieving core. And more changes could still be store, with goalie Ryan Miller and forward Thomas Vanek’s futures uncertain beyond this season. Both are entering the final years of their contracts, and the Sabres haven’t ruled out trading one or both. That’s left Rolston tempering his early expectations of an opening-day roster that could feature as many as seven rookies, including 18-year-old defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen.

Eichel, the 22-year-old captain, has made himself available to the media all season, no matter the result. Since a 10-game win streak ended, Eichel has fielded questions about the team's continued defensive lapses and a number of epic meltdowns. In addition, he has had to try to explain the Sabres' inability to win consecutive games since Dec. 13. The responsibility of leading a young team or answering post-game questions during trying times can wear on the NHL's most experienced players, yet Eichel has continued to flourish on the ice. "He’s a special player, a special person," Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian, an alternate captain, said following practice Wednesday. "He’s done a lot of really good things for this city and this organization. People tend to forget he’s only 22. He’s got a lot on his plate, a lot on his shoulders for a young guy. He’s handled it well. I think at times it’s been tough, but he brings his play every night – his effort, his attitude. He really wants to win." Eichel has done his part in trying to revive the Sabres. His 25 goals are one off from setting a career high, and he already has achieved his best totals in assists (47) and points (72) with 16 regular-season games to play.

Free Press photographer Trevor Hagan was on his way to Minneapolis to cover the Jets/Wild playoff series. They've handled the Minnesota Wild in the first two games off their playoff series, but the Winnipeg Jets have proven to be no match for Mother Nature. A record-setting spring snowstorm meant the Jets were unable to land in Minneapolis Saturday afternoon and forced the charter flight to be diverted to Duluth, 250 kilometres northeast. After sitting on the tarmac for a couple hours waiting to see if an opportunity to get into the Twin Cities might open up, a decision was made to turn the plane around and head back to Winnipeg by late afternoon. All planes were grounded at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport for much of the day as the area was under a blizzard warning, with some estimates of more than 30 centimetres of snow. The Jets will now fly out of Winnipeg Sunday morning, which is a major change to normal game- day routine. The puck is set to drop for Game 3 at 6 p.m. in St Paul, with the Jets up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series. Winnipeg held a brief practice and media availability Saturday morning at the Bell MTS Iceplex, moving up the time because of the storm system.
