Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 2, 2013 Youthful Sabres open in Detroit Wednesday Associated Press October 1, 2013 Sabres coach Ron Rolston is reminded of the changes taking place in downtown Buffalo every day he heads into work. There’s a construction site across the street from the team’s arena, where Sabres owner Terry Pegula’s HarborCenter hotel and entertainment complex is being erected. Then there’s the major overhaul the Sabres themselves have been undergoing over the past eight months. They’re both works in progress, and also reflect the potential of a brighter future in Buffalo. “I would say it’s a good correlation and analogy,” Rolston said. “It’s both out front and in the arena.” Rolston is part of the Sabres’ transformation in replacing longtime coach Lindy Ruff, who was fired in February. The changes didn’t end there during what became a tumultuous, lockout- shortened season that ended with Buffalo missing the playoffs for the fourth time in six years. Before the season was over, the Sabres purged much of their old guard — including captain Jason Pominville — as part of a youth movement to shake up what had been an aging, high-priced and under-achieving core. And more changes could still be store, with goalie Ryan Miller and forward Thomas Vanek’s futures uncertain beyond this season. Both are entering the final years of their contracts, and the Sabres haven’t ruled out trading one or both. That’s left Rolston tempering his early expectations of an opening-day roster that could feature as many as seven rookies, including 18-year-old defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 7, 2019 Burden of captaincy, Sabres' struggles not slowing Jack Eichel's play By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News March 6, 2019 While his Buffalo Sabres teammates filtered out of the visitors' dressing room in Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night, Jack Eichel sat at his stall waiting for reporters to finish speaking with Jason Pominville. Eichel, the 22-year-old captain, has made himself available to the media all season, no matter the result. Since a 10-game win streak ended, Eichel has fielded questions about the team's continued defensive lapses and a number of epic meltdowns. In addition, he has had to try to explain the Sabres' inability to win consecutive games since Dec. 13. The responsibility of leading a young team or answering post-game questions during trying times can wear on the NHL's most experienced players, yet Eichel has continued to flourish on the ice. "He’s a special player, a special person," Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian, an alternate captain, said following practice Wednesday. "He’s done a lot of really good things for this city and this organization. People tend to forget he’s only 22. He’s got a lot on his plate, a lot on his shoulders for a young guy. He’s handled it well. I think at times it’s been tough, but he brings his play every night – his effort, his attitude. He really wants to win." Eichel has done his part in trying to revive the Sabres. His 25 goals are one off from setting a career high, and he already has achieved his best totals in assists (47) and points (72) with 16 regular-season games to play.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips Tuesday, February 5, 2013 Sabres lack balance in scoring By John Vogl Buffalo News February 4, 2013 OTTAWA – Lindy Ruff and assistant coaches James Patrick and Kevyn Adams had solid, lengthy NHL careers. They were not snipers, however. They combined for 313 goals in 2,511 games, which works out to a goal every eight outings or so. That didn’t stop Ruff from joking the trio might provide scoring punch to the struggling Buffalo Sabres. Ruff, Patrick and Adams spent much of Monday’s practice in First Niagara Center anchoring a power play. So after the extended workout, is the trio ready to play on the road against the Ottawa Senators tonight? “We might have to,” Ruff said. There are plenty of “secondary scorers” who would be candidates to come out. Drew Stafford, Jochen Hecht and Nathan Gerbe are among the Sabres still looking for their first goal. Marcus Foligno, Steve Ott and Mihkail Grigorenko head another lengthy list of players who have only one. “That’s our biggest issue right now,” Ott said. “Our second, third and fourth line have not produced at all.” The Sabres will enter Scotiabank Place having won just one of their last seven games. Though they’ve also been a mess defensively, the inability to complement the torrid scoring pace set by Thomas Vanek, Jason Pominville and Cody Hodgson is the main reason for their losing skid. Buffalo needs more scorers, plain and simple. “It needs to happen, and it needs to happen right now,” Stafford said before flying to Canada’s capital.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips November 8, 2018 Jeff Skinner is smashing expectations and raising his price in fast start with Sabres By Mike Harrington The Buffalo News November 7, 2018 The Buffalo Sabres knew they were adding some speed to their lineup and were hopeful about putting a few more goals on the stat sheet when they traded for Jeff Skinner on an otherwise quiet August day a little more than three months ago. At least in the season's first 15 games, they got a whole lot more than that. Skinner has 16 points and a team-high nine goals, which was three off the NHL lead entering Wednesday. Eight have come since he joined Jack Eichel and Jason Pominville two weeks ago on what has suddenly become the franchise's most productive line in years. Since Oct. 20, those eight goals have Skinner tied for tops in the league in goals with San Jose's Timo Meier and Montreal's Max Domi. Skinner and Domi go head-to-head Thursday night when the Sabres and Canadiens meet in Bell Centre. After eight years with the Carolina Hurricanes, Skinner had no idea how things would go with a new team. At first, it was a struggle. He had no points in the first four games. Since then: Sixteen points and a team-high plus- 10 rating over 11 games. "The adjustment has gone pretty smoothly here," Skinner said after practice Wednesday. "The first three, four games didn't work out the way I wanted them to personally and not as a team, either.
