The stories about the Spider-Man skeleton and the "Kaine ruining Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 Reilly's life constantly" issues were good. The stories about Ben Reilly's girlfriend Jessica and his issue with the Fantastic Four were not so good. Overall a good book where the plot moved at a nice pace. Mar 15, Rory Toohey rated it liked it. Well, after eight ish page volumes, they start to dismantle what was shoddily put together. DeMatteis returns to bring his ridiculously melodramatic prose to a love story featuring that pesky asshead Kaine. And JRJR gets to draw a lot of fight scenes in the rain. Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 from the terrible parts, this was pretty Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4. Mar 09, David rated it it was amazing Shelves: comic-books. Totally loved this one. How can I not love a book with JR, Jr. It's just the best! I think my version of heaven will have every Spidey chapter drawn by JR, Jr. Meh Once again this series was really silly and just way too damn loooooooooonggggg. Did I me mention too long??? Too long! May 23, Brandt rated it it was ok Shelves: comic-books. We'll just start this review with the boiler plate I've been attaching to these Clone Saga collections--Dan Slott pulls this off so much better with the Otto Octavius-cum-Spider-Man approach in Superior Spider-Manso The Clone Saga is already behind the eight ball here. Could it be a case of there being too many cooks thanks to FIVE! But I've only got two more of these to go, so there's no quitting now. In this volume, We'll just start this review with the boiler plate I've been attaching to these Clone Saga collections--Dan Slott pulls this off so much better with the Otto Octavius-cum-Spider-Man approach in Superior Spider-Manso The Clone Saga is already behind the eight ball here. In this volume, we see the Spider-Man creative teams beginning to setup to undo everything they had Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 previously to go back to the status quo. In the previous volume they took away Peter's powers, Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 would assume, in an attempt to solidify Ben as the new Spider-Man. But they also introduced a new clone corpse that is custom made to undermine the fact that Ben is the "true" Spider- Man, and then they follow that up by bringing Peter and MJ back into the book! Why would you do that after de-powering him if you didn't intend for him to be Spider-Man again? Obviously, this is what happened. So maybe it would be just to cut to the chase so I don't have to read another pages of this, but I'm going to soldier on Jul 22, Todd rated it it was ok. What a mess. If you answered five years, you've probably read this trade. Why do I think that? Because we can't go more than two issues without a reference to the five years he spent on the road. Little actual development but they really want Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 hammer home that he was gone for five years. Yes, I know this was before trades were huge and they were looking at introducing the story to new readers, but come on! There had to be a better way. I think the recap pages that Marvel does now are way less intrusive. The story gets to breathe and new readers know what is happening! The art is all over the place. Some is awful and others are serviceable. No one really knocks these out of the park. However, they moved relatively slowly with their plans to restore Peter Parker as the true Spider-Man, and push aside Ben Reilly, and as a result the stories start to get a bit thin, as you can tell the writers were trying to spin their wheels until it was finally time to end the Clone Saga. As fans of this era of Marvel Comics would be aware, there was at the time the major X-crossover Onslaught coming down the pike, and with Marvel not wanting the restoration of Peter Parker as Spider-Man to Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 eclipsed by it, they decided to hold off a few more months, which meant drawing the entire Clone Saga out once more. The storyline also featured the Hobgoblin getting a major makeover, as the Jason Macendale version of the character got cybernetic upgrades. Macendale as a character suffered through fads of the early and mid nineties, first getting possessed by a demon, and later getting Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 into a cyborg. Poor guy. The end of the storyline finally wrapped up the long-running plotline of the Spider- skeleton that had been unearthed in the same smokestack that Ben Reilly had woken up in, way back when. The less said about the conclusion, the better, but it was clear with this subplot that Marvel had Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4 the skeleton more or less for the heck of it, because although it complicated matters for the characters, its true origin or purpose was never even explained, until much later, in a one-shot written by Spider-Man: Complete Ben Reilly Epic Book 4. The storyline is hokey, and very nineties, but at least it put that subplot to bed finally. The last issue presented here introduces one of my favourite Ben Reilly-era characters, Jimmy-6, the son of mob boss Fortunato, who would make various apperances over the next few years, even after Peter Parker was restored as Spider-Man. The artwork in this collection feels much more consistent and enjoyable than in the previous Clone Saga collection, with particular standouts being, as usual, Mark Bagley and John Romita Jr. His style was still somewhat blocky, but he had an inker and colourist who really did it justice, adding dimension and depth to his characters. This is a fairly solid and enjoyable collection of Spider-Man stories, with a great sense of pacing throughout the various crossover stories, and definitely worth reading. Skip to content.
