The diversity, intensity, and rapidity of these changes create volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), which challenge leaders on ways to lead effectively as existing methods prove inadequate. The problem in this study was that of inadequate leader preparedness to lead and win in VUCA environments. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of 15 Nigerian corporate executives about their VUCA business environment and the strategies they employed for VUCA-readiness and success within the manufacturing sector. The research question guiding the study related to the lived experiences of corporate executives in manufacturing companies in Nigeria regarding VUCA-readiness and succeeding in a VUCA environment. Chaos theory and complexity leadership theory were used to frame the study. Data collection occurred through snowball sampling to interview 15 participants who are senior executives in large manufacturing corporations in Lagos, Nigeria. Data was analyzed through Ricoeur’s theory of interpretation and member checking. As a result, 4 key themes that emerged were business agility, strategic workforce and demand planning, recovery management for organizational resilience, and conscientious and value-based leadership. The study findings may contribute to positive social change in providing strategies for organizational sustainability, business readiness, responsive leadership, and enhanced employee well-being in VUCA. These decisions need to be made on a solid ground and diverse information sources should be considered in the decision process. For exploring different futures, foresight offers a wide range of methods for gaining insights. The starting point of this thesis is the observation that recent foresight methods particularly use patent and publication data or rely on expert opinion, but few other data sources are used. In times of big data, many other options exist and, for example, social media or websites are currently not a major part of these deliberations. While the volume of data from heterogeneous sources grows considerably, foresight and its methods rarely benefit from such available data. One attempt to access and systematically examine this data is text mining that processes textual data in a largely automated manner. Therefore, this thesis addresses the contribution of text mining and further textual data sources for foresight and its methods. After clarifying the potential of combining text mining and foresight, four concrete examples are outlined. As the results show, the existing foresight methods are improved as exemplified by roadmapping and scenario development.

The research focuses on a multiple case-study in the telecommunication sector. Through a comparison of five international companies that perform CF and two that do not, the paper highlights the organizational variables that characterize an organization for CF. In order to foster CF, different organizational forms have been found: a dedicated foresight unit, a strong interrelation among strategy, R&D and marketing, specific task projects. Berlin, 14th September, 2015 Michael Kaserer i Management Summary Corporate foresight involves future–oriented awareness and enables the company to detect discontinuous change early, interpret the consequences for the company and formulate effective strategic responses. In the present thesis a focus is set on incumbent firms exposed to external change arising from start–ups. It is argued that start–ups are particular sources of disruptions which have therefore to be integrated into the corporate foresight activities. The exploratory research aims at extending the corporate foresight knowledge base to the start–up context and is organized around the following research question: How do established companies across different industries integrate start–ups into their corporate foresight activities? Based on 10 semi–structured interviews with foresight experts across different indus- tries, the findings show how firms identify relevant start–ups and what are possible corporate foresight outcomes with the aim to successfully innovate and adapt to dis- ruptive changes. The findings indicate that start–ups were integrated into corporate foresight in order to source new ideas, to identify upcoming trends in the business environment, to recruit high–potentials as well as a way to perform market–testings. By doing so, corporate foresight practices needed new information sources as well as modern methodologies.

So far scholars have emphasized that the main advantages of scenarios consist in developing the learning and adaptive skills of organizations. We thus investigate how to develop further these learning skills. Our paper contributes to the strategic management literature in three ways. First, it illustrates a new and simplified methodological approach to real option valuation. Second, it embeds this methodological approach into the 2 x 2 scenario matrix technique. Third, it deepens our understanding of the advantages that the combined use of scenarios and real options might bring to each technique.
