REPORT: Insect visitors to Marianthus aquilonaris and surrounding flora Nov 2-4, 2019 Kit Prendergast, Native bee scientist BSc First Class Honours, PhD researcher and Forrest Scholar On behalf of Botanica Consulting 1 REPORT: Insect visitors to Marianthus aquilonaris and surrounding flora Nov 2-4 2019 Kit Prendergast, Native bee scientist Background Marianthus aquilonaris (Fig. 1) was declared as Rare Flora under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950 in 2002 under the name Marianthus sp. Bremer, and is ranked as Critically Endangered (CR) under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN 2001) criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v); C2a(ii) due to its extent of occurrence being less than 100 km2, its area of occupancy being less than 10 km2, a continuing decline in the area, extent and/or quality of its habitat and number of mature individuals and there being less than 250 mature individuals known at the time of ranking (Appendix A). However, it no longer meets these criteria as more plants have been found, and a recommendation has been proposed to be made by DBCA to the Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC) to change its conservation status to CR B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) (Appendix A), but this recommendation has not gone ahead (DEC, 2010). Despite its listing as CR under the Western Australian Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, the species is not currently listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The main threats to the species are mining/exploration, track maintenance and inappropriate fire regimes (DEC, 2010). Fig. 1. Marianthus aquilonaris, showing flower, buds and leaves. -

Jessop2 The sequence of families used in this Flora follows closely the one adopted by the Australian Plant Census (www.anbg.gov. au/chah/apc), which in turn is based on that of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG III 2009) and Mabberley’s Plant Book (Mabberley 2008). It differs from previous editions of the Flora, which were mainly based on the classification system of Engler & Gilg (1919). A list of all families recognised in this Flora is printed in the inside cover pages with families already published highlighted in bold. The up-take of this new system by the State Herbarium of South Australia is still in progress and the S.A. Census database (www.flora.sa.gov.au/census.shtml) still uses the old classification of families. The Australian Plant Census web-site presents comparison tables of the old and new systems on family and genus level. A good overview of all families can be found in Heywood et al. (2007) and Stevens (2001–), although these authors accept a slightly different family classification. A number of names with which people using this key may be familiar but are not employed in the system used in this work have been included for convenience and are enclosed on quotation marks. 1. (National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, Australia 2000) 1986. Chromosome numbers in Lomandra (Dasypogonaceae). Telopea 2(6): 741-744 - Chromosome numbers for Sections Lomandra (13 species studied) and Typhopsis (one species) are based on x = 8, but three species of Sect. Cephalogyne have x = 7. Eight species are reported as diploid and five as tetraploid, while four show infraspecific polyploidy. The chromosome numbers of 17 species have been determined (Table 1). Several of these counts were previously reported (in Lee 1966) but without citation of voucher specimens. Preparations were of root-tips or pre-meiotic floral buds, pre-treated with saturated aqueous p-dichlorobenzene for about 2 Y4 hours, fixed in 1:3 acetic-alcohol and stained with aceta-orcein or alcoholic carmine. The sex of many vouchers could not be determined, since they were collected out of the flowering season. One of the counts of L. preissii (Waterhouse NSW 75454), a diploid, was cultivated for nine months in Sydney and there produced female and herma phrodite flowers and set fruit in isolation from other flowering plants of Lomandra. This genus is normally dioecious but hermaphrodite flowers occur sporadically in other species (A. T. Lee pers. comm.). Two base numbers are represented: x = 8 in the 13 counted species of Sect. Lomandra and x = 7 in three species of Sect. Cephalogyne, following the classi fication of Stevens (1978). A count of 2n = 16 has been obtained on L. -

Howick Road South Construction Project (Muntz Rd to Fisheries Rd) Vegetation, Flora, Fauna and Environmental Considerations Report December 2017 Julie Waters (BEnvSci) Senior Environmental Officer EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The survey has been undertaken in accordance with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Technical Guidance, Terrestrial Flora and Vegetation Surveys for Environmental Impact Assessment in Western Australia (2016) as part of the application to Clear Native Vegetation for a 9.6 km section of road upgrades. Total area of 24 hectares, 6.72 hectares of which is native vegetation. The permit area is along S Howick Road Reserve (between Muntz Road and Henkes Road) and Henkes Road Reserve (between Howick Road and Fisheries road). The existing road is a gravel road within a 100 metres wide road reserve. The total cleared road width is currently ranges from 18 metres. The Shire is applying to clear 25m wide along the 9.6km section of road to allow for drains to be located anywhere within the clearing footprint area. The entire 25m will not be cleared along the whole length of the permit. Introduction The Shire of Esperance plans to upgrade Howick Road from the Fisheries to Coolinup road over a 3 year period. One section has already been done CPS7185. This is a major transport route to the Beaumont CBH grain receival facility and thus gets a high amount of trucks and other traffic. The survey is part of our compliance obligations for the purpose of clearing native vegetation to construct the road. Howick road and Henke Road are approximately 85km east of Esperance, on the south coast of Western Australia. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. It seems to be 4 somewhat forgotten genus which is worthy of more attention. Reinhold Forster (1729-98) and his son Johann Gemge Adam Forster (1754-94) ed "Leptospermurn" in 1776 but separation of the species remained difficult. named several species in 1867. Briggs and Johnson produced an acceptable classification for Myrtaceae, based on inflorescence structure, in 1979. In revision of Leptospermum by Thompson was published. Bean conducted further e Leptospermum originates from the Greek leptos - fine or slender and sperma - a seed. Most pdople are aware of the various cultivars of the New Zealand form of Leptospermurn scoparium which have been available in nurseries for many years. My experience with these has been that they require a cool climate with well-drained soil conditions for opt+-m growth. Leptospermum scoparium also occurs in Tasmania. In the 1988 edition of "Rare or Threatened Australian Plants" by Briggs & Leigh 21 Leptospermum species are listed. These include Leptospermum epacridoideum, glabrescens, leuhma ti, maxwellii, sericeum, wooroonooran and some listed as "species 1 to species 16". 80 doubt some of these species are now named or have been classified as identical to some previously named species.
