Thomas Merton's Poetic Incarnation of Emptiness Alan Altany I. Introduction: A Heaven of Naked Air Thomas Merton's later poetry is an emblem of his transcending his previous desire for explanatory, propositional, theological demar cations, a geography of the "unknowing" and "emptiness" of the sa cred. Thus, the progression of Merton's poetic work can be seen as a poetics of disappearance: the disappearance of an old, corrupt world in favor of a vision of a kenotic, new world; the disappearance of the false self or empirical ego in favor of discovering the true self in and inseparable from God; the disappearance of traditional religious im agery in favor of spontaneous imagination and antipoetry; the disap pearance of an exclusively supernatural category of the sacred in favor of a humanized and intimate experience of the sacred in the center of the profane. Merton was a man and poet of transformation. This article seeks to interpret the topography of that transformation in Merton's poetry of the 1960s and especially within Emblems of a Season of Fun;. In his early monastic years the sacred for Merton tended to wards a super-essential conception of a divine reality beyond the im manent boundaries of this world. His poetry of the 1940s and 1950s is filled with images of a theological dualism between the natural and the supernatural, between the profane and the sacred. During the last part of his life, his towering personality dominated the intellectual climate of Russia and the world to an unprecedented degree. His work, moreover, continues to be studied and admired. His views on art, literature, morals, politics, and life have never ceased to influence writers and thinkers all over the world. Such interest over the years has produced an immense quantity of books and articles about Tolstoy, his ideas, and his work. In Russia alone their number exceeded ten thousand some time ago (more than 5,500 items were published in the Soviet Union between 1917 and 1957) and con tinues to rise. -

Jean-Baptiste Clamence and the literary infection by evil Summary The article presents the concept of evil, as developed in the literary as well as phil- osophical works of Albert Camus. After a short, preliminary notice on the rela- tionship between literature and evil, the article presents two spheres, in which the problem of evil was grasped by the author of The Rebel. In the main part of the ar- ticle, the complexity of the problem of evil, as represented by Jean-Baptiste Cla- mence from The Fall is shown. It is seen as a development of the concept of evil from The Plague, with the potency to disseminate onto others. It is also perceived, as something resulting from severe trauma of the main character. In conclusion, I claim, that the problem of evil, as experienced by Clamence may be understood as a still relevant metaphor of contemporary culture, struggling with passivity against the rise of social evil. Any opinions or claims contained in this Working Paper do not necessarily reflect the views of HSE Svetlana Klimova1 THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE GOOD AND THE EVIL IN THE TEACHINGS OF LEO TOLSTOY AND HANNAH ARENDT2 The main subject of this article is devited of analyses a problem of Good and Evil in the teaching of Leo Tolstoy and Hannah Arendt. each in his epoch and by a similar way, got to the back of contradictions between “reasonableness”, “morality” and a human behavior in the state and society though they approached them from the opposing points of view. The approach of Tolstoy was Christian-ethical while that of Arendt was philosophic-political. Their congeniality is attributed to the fact that the ethics of Tolstoy and the policy of Arendt are built on a common theoretical ground, i.e. the philosophical anthropology of Kant. In the “man-state” opposition, Tolstoy revealed the ethical prerequisites to creation of the totalitarian ideology, and Arendt showed up the historical, political and inhuman essence of the totalitarianism phenomenon as such. The Fall, by Albert Camus
The Fall, by Albert Camus In A Nutshell The Fall is the fictional, first person confession of Jean-Baptiste Clamence, a Parisian expatriate. Jean-Baptiste used to be a hotshot defense lawyer, but suddenly realized his life was hypocritical and now lives out his days in a seedy bar in Amsterdam. The novel puts you in the center of the action (not unlike those "Choose Your Own Adventure " books) because Jean-Baptiste talks to you while you’re sitting by him in said seedy bar. But The Fall is famous for more than its interesting narrative technique. For one, it was written by Albert Camus, a French thinker known for his philosophy of the absurd, a close cousin to existentialism, and his frenemy status with Jean-Paul Sartre, another French philosopher of the mid-1900s. (Note that throughout his life Camus maintained that he was not an existentialist.) Now, Camus is most famous for three big novels. The first is The Stranger, published in 1942, which tells the story of a detached, emotionless man convicted of murder, who finds existential freedom while in prison awaiting his death. The second is The Plague, in 1947, which revolves around an outbreak of the bubonic plague in an Algerian town, and the struggle of its citizens to deal with human suffering. And of course, the third is The Fall, in 1956, published shortly before Camus was awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature. Camus died only three years afterwards, making The Fall his final piece of fiction. Through these three novels, as well as his other works, Camus establishes and explores several ideas of his philosophy. -
