I remember as a boy my dear Grandfather saying to me that if someone (especially elderly) can spare 5, 10 or 30 minutes of their life to tell you something about themselves, about history or give advice I should listen because their life is precious and they have taken the time to give you a part of it. THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF DUNLOP MOTORSPORT IN TOUCH [ www.injection.tv ] ISSUE TEN, NOVEMBER 2008 Simoncelli, di Meglio and Dunlop celebrate in style! Marco Simoncelli and Alvaro Bautista have been the most consistent finishers in the MotoGP 250cc category, each scoring in 13 of the 15 races this year and are first and second in the riders' standings with one race remaining, in Valencia at the end of October. With his third place finish in Malaysia mid-October, seconds behind Bautista at the chequered flag, it was Simoncelli who was crowned the 2008 250cc champion and the Italian celebrated by completing a helmet-less victory lap around the track. Simoncelli has scored five wins to Bautista's four so far this year, but the Italian has consistently finished on the podium. Mid-season he was on devastating form, finishing second to Mika Kallio in France, and then winning the Spanish and German Grands Prix, finishing second in Britain, and third at the Dutch Grand Prix. Bautista had fallen far behind by the time the bikes lined up in Spain, having scored one win, but just 16 more points in the Mike di Meglio wins the Australian 125cc race and Dunlop's 12th straight category title opening six races. The Spaniard worked hard during the second half of the year, starting on his home ground where he was second to Simoncelli, and that led Dunlop celebrates another successful to a run of six straight podium finishes, culminating in victory in South Africa. TASMANIAN MOTORSPORT HALL OF FAME DAVID “Skippy” PARSONS (Inducted 2021) David “Skippy” Parsons started his motorsport career as a teenager, on a trials bike in 1975. He had a natural talent and won the Tasmanian championship the following year. It was to be his first of an amazing nine consecutive championships through until 1985. David also contested three Australian championships, which in the 1970s and 1980s usually attracted fields of nearly 300 riders from all over Australia and overseas, finishing ninth in 1985. While excelling on two wheels, David was also starting to make a name for himself on four wheels, winning his class in club days in his father Graham’s Holden Torana SLR5000 L34. He also set a course record at the Highclere Hillclimb, in the State’s North-West, which stood for many years, so when Graham retired from racing in 1977, it was only natural David move up to touring cars. After several seasons, which included a class record at Symmons Plains, David upgraded to a Holden Commodore - and always looking for more power - he purchased a second-hand motor from John Harvey of the Holden Dealer Team in 1982. David finished fifth in the Symmons Plains round of the national championship before going on to record four top-five results to finish 12th in the championship and winning Rookie of the Year. His efforts didn’t go un-noticed and he was recruited by the Peter Jansen Cadbury Schweppes Team to race a Commodore at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 endurance events. David and Peter finished fourth in David’s first appearance at Mount Panorama, qualifying third on the grid the following year and running as high as second before a blown engine ended their day.

The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust February / March 2015, Issue #6 Bruce McLaren Retirement Village – Grand Opening As mentioned in our first issue, the trust is very proud to be associated with Ryman Healthcare’s newest Retirement Village located at 795 Chapel Road, Howick, East Auckland. Ryman is the country’s largest Aged Care operator presently with 30 Retirement Villages. Traditionally the villages are named after famous New Zealanders. The ‘Grand Opening’ of the village was held on Friday 19th December, to which the Trustee’s were invited as special guests, along with other special guests, existing residents, prospective residents, construction staff, contractors and others. There was certainly a McLaren motor racing flavour to the evening, with orange themed special invitations, white-overalled parking attendants waving chequered flags and, parked under the village centre porte-cochere were the Trust’s McLaren Service Station workshop vintage Austin 7 and a brand new McLaren 650S Spider! Guests enjoyed a cocktail party and a selection of songs from Dame Malvina Major, along with speeches by Ryman Healthcare Managing Director Simon Challies, CFO Gordon MacLeod, and our own Jan McLaren, who had the honour of officially opening the new Bruce McLaren Retirement Village. Jan’s was a particularly memorable speech and included her personal thoughts: “Bruce was well recognised internationally, and it is great to see a tribute to him in his home city. It’s nice to see his name remembered on something permanent outside of the motorsport community. We were very pleased to have been asked.’’ A commemorative plaque in the village centre was then unveiled by Jan, ably assisted by another very special guest, Greeta Hulme.
