With each issue of Heartland Magazine, each month we have many hundreds of people visit our offices and tell us their story. It seems Heartland Magazine has become a huge talking point amongst our community and it's the stories, facts and history we place in to each edition that has inspired many people to come and tell us about their lives. I remember as a boy my dear Grandfather saying to me that if someone (especially elderly) can spare 5, 10 or 30 minutes of their life to tell you something about themselves, about history or give advice I should listen because their life is precious and they have taken the time to give you a part of it. You know, these words have stayed with me, I've said it to my kids, friends and staff. We are all so busy these days with smart phones The tenth Issue of Heartland and computers and we are time poor but, we should take time out and listen to the Magazine is underway and will elderly especially, we can learn from them. The picture also shows PO Boxes marked COA – these aren’t allowed to be used they are so rare. COA is thought to be a misprint – it was too early for the Commonwealth of Australia; it is thought it should read AOC.

Tanya, Mallanganee’s Post Mistress tried to research it once and thought she’d made headway when she found pictures of similar boxes; however they turned out to be the actual Mallanganee PO boxes; just on an unknown website.

Due to the age of the post office boxes, even Australia Post is unsure of their origin/make. If you know someone that can tell us what COA stood for and what year they were made, please write in to us here at Heartland Magazine as we’d love to find out.

Footnote: I couldn’t resist asking Tanya what the strangest mail she has ever had to Current PO Boxes deal with might be. She told me that she gets mail for the Bruxners’, (whom the Highway is named after) which is fairly odd, as they have been deceased for well over 50 years. She had to ring Australia Post and ask how strict the delivery code on the mail was, as these are addressed to the gravesite of the Bruxers. She was asked to deliver them regardless, as it is a legal paperwork issue to do with the Bruxners’ estate. While Tanya said she doesn’t mind delivering the Bruxners’ mail to the cemetery, she said “She would be most alarmed if they ever turned up to collect it instead!”.

The Tabulam Race Day is a wonderful social event; Fashion on the Field is a feature, although the dress code encompasses everything from High Fashion to stubbies and thongs.

The second largest horse race in the Northern Rivers area, there will be plenty of entertainment for the kids, horse racing for the adults, licensed bars and TAB access. I caught up with Milton, who told me “When it comes to live horse races, you won’t get a meeting like it anywhere else.”

The marquee spots sell out every year. The Tabulam Cup is the feature Race of the Day, being held at approximately 2 pm. Put the date into your calendar and take the whole family out for a day of fun and fashion. You’ll be glad you did.

Dandelions: Make a wish Sometimes known simply as “puffballs” the dandelion has always been a way of making a wish. You pick the dandelion, make a wish and blow all the seeds off in a single breath to make the wish come through. The origin of this practise is unknown.

The floral meaning of the dandelion is that as a gift for a loved one that it will provide happiness for them and is also a promise of total faithfulness. From the sunflower family, it’s also thought that while you blow on it you can send your thoughts and dreams to your loved one across the wind.

Lastly, if you are in love, you can blow on a dandelion to see if they love you back. If all the seeds blow off on the first breath, your love is returned. If it takes two breaths, your loved one has reservations.

The saying “ a heart as big as Phar Lap’s” alludes to the horses strength and staying power, as well as the actual weight of the horses heart itself. In 1987, the Fairymount festival was still going strong. Twenty-one years after it first began as the Dairy Festival, it celebrating its ‘coming of age’ with style and flair. The theme for the year was Memories. Many former officials and participants were asked to return if at all possible, which they did. Some of the highlights included live music with hits from the 60’s, give-aways and gifts for the kids; such as free sausages from the local butchers. The main parade was held at the Kyogle showground that year, not in the main street.

Hot air ballooning was the feature of the festival, with early morning rides as well as fixed rides during the day. It must have been quite a sight hanging over Kyogle and Fairymount, looking down on hundreds and hundreds of people attending the festival. The bird’s eye view must have been quite spectacular. A historical booklet was printed that year to commemorate the 21 years of the festival. The parade, as usual, had a lot to offer; with marching girls, a gymnastics display, the

1977 Queen & Princess Northern Rivers Concert Band, a float for the Queen of Fairymount and much more. On the Monday night a variety concert was held, showcasing the local talents of performers of all kinds and was very popular. The art exhibition also kicked off Monday night, with wine and cheese at the opening event. On Wednesday, the Official Dinner was held – some things don’t change. A maypole was one interesting addition that year. Friday saw the buskers contest kick off, with the buskers all dressed up it was quite a sight to behold.

On the showground, a vintage car display was a big crowd pleaser, along with many rides, market stalls, sideshow alley, the ghost house, Costume Guy hoop la, ‘knock a dolly” and a disco. Bluegrass band ‘Bootleg’ provided live music throughout the festival.

The aim of the festival, even then was “ to promote Kyogle and district as a productive and scenic area.”

I’m sure they didn’t expect the festival to be going strong 25 years later and beyond.

Long touted as a rallying point for community spirit, the festival to this day, brings together the community, sporting and service clubs, schools, charitable events, business operators and banks.

Wendy McIntosh Highlights from 1992 included a hang gliding display Miss Kyogle Hospital and a street machines show. The parade featured 1977 the Lismore City Pipe Band, the Gold Coast

Traditional Jazz Band and the Tongan Brass Band. Saturday afternoon entertainment was provided by rock n roll group ‘Spellbound’ as well as the delightful sound of Isabella a Capella.

The Fairymount Festival queen for the year was Megan Watts, who raised a staggering $7000 for charity. The year went down in the history books as providing record sales in the shops a real boost for local businesses.

The mixed golf tournament was also a big success, as
