Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. • Branch Rickey Was Born in 1880 and Branch Rickey Grew up on a Modest Farm in Southern Wohio
esley Branch Rickey was born in 1880 and Branch Rickey grew up on a modest farm in southern WOhio. His parents instilled Branch with General Manager, strong Christian values that would remain with him throughout his life. Schooled in a one room St. Louis Cardinals schoolhouse, he taught himself Latin and Greek and went on to attend Ohio Wesleyan University where he played baseball and football. While still in college, he was invited to play professional baseball. Wanting his parents’ approval for his involvement in pro ball, he pledged to them to never go into a baseball stadium on a Sunday, a promise that became a lifetime commitment. After a short stint as a catcher with the St. Louis Browns and New York Highlanders, he went on to complete his law degree at the University of Michigan. After coaching for a short time at Michigan, he spent most of the next ten years managing in the major leagues. It was Branch’s sharp eye for talent that brought him to the business side of baseball, where he would revolutionize the game. As General Manager for the St. Louis Cardinals, Rickey originated the concept of the “farm system”, utilizing minor league farm clubs to develop talent for major league teams. Soon the Cardinals were a National League power and teams everywhere were copying Branch’s system. Thanks to Rickey’s innovation and determination, the Cardinals produced nine pennants and six world championships from 1926 -1947. Later as president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Rickey decided that in order for baseball to be truly “the national pastime,” a long tradition of whites-only would have to be broken.

“The Royals of Sir Cedric” by Steve Treder of The Hardball Times December 21, 2004 At its inception, the most successful expansion franchise in pre-free agency baseball history didn’t impress many observers. • Introduction Making an Adjustment
Introduction Making an Adjustment David M.K. Sheinin and Raanan Rein The Jewish American comedian Lenny Bruce famously reflected, “Who can be glad they’re Jewish? You can say…I’ve made a good adjustment, but that’s all.”1 In his 2013 documentary, “When Jews were Funny,” director Alan Zweig is pre- occupied with and anxious about what has changed in recent decades regard- ing Jewish comedy and Jewish comedians in the United States. More specifically, he asks, is there still “Jewish” comedy? No comedians interviewed have the same answer, but Gilbert Gottfried may have come closest to explaining a shift that has occurred over time. While yiddishkeit, Yiddish in-jokes, the Borscht Belt, and the other categorical “Jewish” markers of a comedian’s identity may have slipped away, Jewish comedy continues to function through comedic devices that identify protagonists as Jewish in conjunction with other, overlap- ping identities. Reflecting an ever more complicated set of ethnic and other identities in the Americas, the shift is away from the rigid, and toward a set of constantly reconfiguring identity borders. So according to Gottfried, on the popular television comedy Seinfeld, “every character in it was a Jew, even though they changed their name…. George Costanza and his family were all Jews, but they have an Italian name.”2 Jews have been adjusting their identities for centuries. Sport tells those adjustment stories in the twentieth century where Jewish sport narratives have both reflected and pushed a growing fluidity and complexity of ethnic identity and its boundaries. Jewish sports narratives have tended away from rigid mark- ers toward more complex, multifaceted identity narratives.
