Het is voor elke rozenliefhebber boeiend regelmatig op de hoogte te worden gesteld met ontwikkelingen die zich voordoen. Het is beslist geen uitzondering dat amateurs na verloop van tijd intensief met het vak mee gaan leven . Uiteraard is de belangstelling in eerste instantie gericht op de verschillende facetten van het teeltechnische vlak, daar­ naast gaat men zich echter ook interesseren voor de hoe ­ danigheid van de afzetverhoudingen. Ook de spanning tussen kosten en opbrengsten van de bedrijven wordt door rozenliefhebbers geconstateerd bij het beluisteren van bezorgde geluiden over de afzet van rozenstruiken gedurende de jongste drie jaren. Productie voor een nog onbekende markt. In het binnenland worden de meeste rozen afgenomen door grootgebruikers als Plantsoenendiensten, Buitenplaat­ sen, Amateurs enz. Met betrekking tot de export kan gesteld worden dat deze zich vooral richt op Engeland en de Scandinavische landen. Het ontbreekt ons echter nog te veel aan cijfermateriaal om nauwkeur ig verhoudingen aan te kunnen geven, laat staan om daaraan conclusies te kunnen verbinden! 17 Verhouding tussen ontwikkeling "Vraag en aanbod" wordt o.m . bepaald door economi­ sche - en klimatologische omstandigheden . Enerzijds zijn gedurende de jongste drie jaren in het binnenland de voorraden aan rozen sterk toegenomen door de terugval in de bouw, waardoor minder plantsoenen en tuinen werden aangelegd. Anderzijds stagneert de export naar Engeland door de economische situatie aldaar, ter· wijl in de Scandinavische !anden rozen in geringere mate bevriezen doordat "Koning Win­ ter" gedurende de laatste jaren veel macht heeft verloren (normaal bervr iest in Scandina­ vië elk jaa r 30%). Als gevo lg van deze omstandigheden is de produktie van rozen in gehee l Europa zo ver ingekrompen dat verwacht kan worden dat in het komende najaar de overschotten weer tot het ver leden zul len kunnen behoren. De pr ijzen zul len daarna waarschijnlijk weer optrekken. Publiciteit van de Roos. Wel is het mogelijk de vraag te vergroten door voorlichting - en reclameacties te stimu­ leren . Hierbij kunnen de Nederlandse Rozenvereniging, haar zusterverenig ing de "Kon. Mij Tuinbouw en Plantkunde" en vaktechnische organisaties als de Plant Propaganda Ho lland (P.P.H.) nog zeer talr ijke diensten bewijzen. Wij denken hierbij in het bijzonder aan de voorlichtingsaktiviteiten van de 135 "Mij" -af­ delingen (135 locaties over het hele land gespreid) en de nieuwe affiche van de Plant Propaganda Holl and : ,,Straks zit u op rozen! ". Ook de voorlichtingsaktiviteiten van de Nederlandse Rozenvereniging be loven veel voor de toekomst, dit blijkt uit de toenemende belangstelling voor allerlei excursies. Het spreekt voor zich dat deze lovenswaardige aktiviteiten voor zowel de amateur-vereni­ gingen als het vak hun uitwerking niet zullen missen ! Ing. Tj. v.d. Kooi. IN DI T NUMMER pag. Het ledental van de Nederlandse Rozenvereniging blijft zich ondanks de iets neergaande conjunctuur toch gunstig ontwikkelen. Bedroeg het ledental eind 1973 zo'n 298 leden, eind 1974 was dit aangegroeid tot 450. Deze ledenwinst is voor een belangrijk deel mede te danken aan de inspanningen van de zustervereniging "De Roos" . Deze vereniging, waarin de rozenkwekers zich hebben verenigd, verklaarde zich bereid aan hun bekende rozenliefhebbers, die nog geen lid zijn van de Nederlandse Rozenvereniging het lidmaatschap voor 1974 aan te bieden. Dit gebaar en de toezegging deze aanbieding eveneens in 1975 te doen, stemmen het bestuur tot grote dankbaarheid. Om als vereniging de toenemende kosten te kunnen dragen is groe i een eerste vereiste. Ook aan de leden wordt gevraagd rozenliefhebbers van het bestaan van de vereniging op de hoogte te brengen. Op deze wijze en via publicaties in o.m . .,Groei en Bloe i" en het b lad "De Volkstu in­ der" van het Algemeen Verbond van Volks t uindersveree nigingen zal getr acht worden een steeds grotere bekendheid te verkrijgen. Nieuw adres administratie. Het adres is gewijzigd, dit luidt: Mevr. Keip-Hooge ndijk, Breedelaan 6a, Bussum, tel. 02159 - 18066. Mevr. Keip beheert het secretariaat, vragen en suggesties kun t u haar med edelen . Verslag rozensnoeimiddag op zaterdag 8 maart j.l. op Kwekerij "De Wilde" te Bussum, G.A-H. Buisman en Zn te Heerde, J. Spek B.V. te Boskoop en Fa. H.A. Verschuren en Zonen te Haps. Waarschijn lijk gestimuleerd door het guns t ige weer wa s de opkomst van Rozenl iefhebbe rs zeer verheugend . Op Rozenkwekerij "De Wilde" te Bussum on tvingen ru im veertig en­ thousiaste mensen aanschouwelijk onderricht in het snoeien van rozen. Bij Rozenkwekerij G.A.H. Buisman en Zn waren 10 leden te gast, na instruc t ie door de bedrijfs leider - de heer van der Hoeven - kreeg een ieder de gelegenheid waardig­ heid te ontwikkelen. Niet alleen de snoei van struikrozen, doch ook die van klimrozen ontving ruimschoot s aandacht. Het bestuur heeft met voldoen ing geconstateerd dat de ze voor jaarsexcur sies veel be lang ­ stell ing genieten, reden te meer om deze ook in een volgend jaar weer te organis eren. Tenslotte rest ons nog oo k hier een dankwoord te richten tot de gasth eren rozenkweker s, die de leden van de "Veren iging" met raad en daad advisee rden en derhalve de sno ei­ excursies mogelijk maakten . HET ZOMERPROGRAMMA VAN DE NED ERLANDSE ROZENVER ENIGING . De voorlopige programma's van de excursies op 10 mei, 2 en 18 juli werden reeds in het eerste Rozenbu lletin '75 vermeld. Wij wijzen u in het bijzonder op de datum van de Jaarve rgadering van de Ned. Rozen­ vereniging, welke is vastgesteld op 3 augustus a.s. Wilt u deze en de volgende data in uw agenda vastleggen? 19 Woensdag 2 juli: excursie naar Rosarium "Floriade" te Amsterdam, koffietafel in restaurant v.d. Horst te Aalsmeer en bezoek aan Rozenkwekerij ,,Rosaflor" aan de Kwakel tussen Aalsmeer en Uithoorn. Aanvang: 10 uur. Vrijdag 18 juli: bezoek Rozenkwekerij "De Wilde" te Bussum. Aanvang: vanaf 2 uur. Zaterdag 9 augustus: Jaarvergadering van de Ned. Rozenvereniging in het Westbroek­ park, Den Haag, met vooraf een rozenkeuring door de leden. Aanvang: 10.30 uur. Zaterdag 13 september: Excurs ie naar de tuinen van de Midde lbare Tuinbouwschool te Frederiksoord, koffietafel in restaurant Blok te Wapserveen en bezoek aan Kon. Kwekerij "Moerheim", Dedemsvaart. 100 JARIG BESTAAN ENGELSE ROZENVERENIGING (5-8 JULI '76). Reeds in een eerder Rozenbulletin wezen wij u op deze feestelijke gebeurtenis. Tegelijk werd de voorzichtige gedachte gelanceerd om bij eventuele belangstelling een gezamenlijke re is te organiseren. Laat u de administratie van onze vereniging - Mevr. De eerste bloei is de meest uitbundige, het is daarom wellicht aanbevelenswaardig de rosaria dan eens met een bezoek te vereren.     The Red Rose of Lancaster? JOHN ASHDOWN—HILL In the fifteenth century the rival houses of Lancaster and York fought the ‘Wars of the Roses’ for possession of the crown. When, in 1485, the new Tudor monarch, Henry VII, brought these wars to an end, he united, by his mam'age to Elizabeth of York, the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York, to create a new emblem and a new dynasty. Thus was born the Tudor rose. So might run a popular account, and botanists, searching through the lists of medieval rose cultivars, have even proposed identifications of the red rose of Lancaster with Rosa Gallica and the white rose of York with Rosa Alba, while the bi-coloured Tudor rose is linked to the naturally occurring variegated sport of Rosa Gallica known as ‘Rosa Mundi’ (Rosa Gallica versicolor), or alternatively, to the rather paler Rosa Damascena versicolor.     This is Richard III. He was King of England in 1485 when Henry Tudor fought against him at the Battle of Bosworth Field. This is Henry Tudor. He came from Wales and he wanted to be the new King of England. His army battled against Richard III at Bosworth Field and won. Henry became the new King of England, Henry VII, in 1485. Richard III belonged to the House of York. His family were called Plantagenet and their family badge, called a crest, was the Wild Boar. Because he came from York, Richard also used the badge of York the White Rose. Henry Tudor ‘s family badge (crest) was the Red Rose. Because he came from Wales and belonged to the House of Lancaster, Henry also used the badge of the Welsh Red Dragon. After Henry defeated Richard, and became the new King of England, Henry VII, he married Richard III’s cousin, Elizabeth of York. Henry then combined the White Rose of York with the Red Rose of Tudor, so that the new badge became the Red and White Tudor Rose. Family badges (crests) were used a lot during Tudor times. If you saw a crest on something or someone’s clothes you could tell which family they belonged to. Family Crests were a little like the company logos that we see today on clothes. Family crests were created because in Tudor times knights started to wear armour with helmet visors that covered their faces. Because you could not see the knight’s face there had to be a way of telling who they were.

In the last issue of the Roy al Update was the story of the Mission Rose coming to Oregon and thriv ing in the climate so well suited to roses. In June of 1889 the newly f ormed Portland Rose Society held its f irst exhibit of roses. To this exhibit goes the credit f or the birth of the Rose Festiv al idea. On June 10, 1904, the Rose Society held its f irst f loral parade. The f lower-decked v ehicles, bicy cles, carry alls were f ine; horses pranced and paced, with roses wov en in their bridles. There were twenty automobiles in the line of march, carbon arc lights f lickered on 3rd Street, and the business part of the city was near the f amous Skidmore Fountain.
