Long woodland trails, wetlands with boardwalks, lake, heath, grassy plains In Brief This is a fascinating walk of great variety, featuring long woodland trails, many of them unsigned, punctuated by some considerable surprises. The most notable of these is the Wetlands Centre where a boardwalk and good sandy paths keep you dry-shod, and where food and drink is available at the Heather Farm Café . There are no nettles and no troublesome undergrowth on this walk. Some of the paths on the north side are muddy in a wet winter but the lack of fencing means you can usually skip to either side. Provided you have good boots, you will enjoy this walk even (or especially) in winter. With very little road walking (and no stiles!), your dog will be very welcome on this walk.     In a series of guided Heritage Walks around Woking, and in these articles, we investigates the stories behind H G Wells’ CHAPTER THREE - famous science-fiction novel ‘The War of the Worlds’ ON HORSELL COMMON Iain Wakeford 2016 Having read of the Martian cylinder in his ‘Daily Chronicle’, the Narrator heads to Horsell Common where he finds the turf and gravel ‘charred as if by a sudden explosion’. There was a group of bystanders including ‘a couple of cyclists, a jobbing gardener I employed sometimes, a girl carrying a baby, Gregg the butcher and his little boy, and two or three loafers and golf caddies who were accustomed to hang around the railway station’. Wells and his wife learned to ride a bicycle whilst in Woking, and it appears that he was quite keen on gardening, mentioning his little greenhouse with an illustration of the first marrow that he grew there, in his autobiography written in 1934 (below). Who the girl carrying the baby or Gregg the butcher and his little boy were we do not know (there were many more butchers in Woking in 1895 than there are today), but I cannot help wonder whether these and the ‘loafers and golf caddies’ had upset Wells one day as he was wondering around Woking, and had therefore found their way into his ‘little black book’ to be later destroyed by his Martians! The same could probably be said of those who were at the sandpits in the afternoon of that www.wokinghistory.org There were numerous butcher’s shops in Woking in Wells’ day, most no doubt displaying their meat similar to that shown here at Robert Wasley’s shop in Chertsey Road, Woking.

    The Common The newsletter from the Horsell Common Preservation Society Volume 17 Spring 2020 ic reqd May in McLaren Park We have all seen a lot of changes during these strange and challenging times, normal patterns have altered, and new behaviours adopted, to follow national and local guidance to manage this virus. These changes have naturally affected Horsell Common Preservation Society, our commons and staff. HCPS working closely with other managers of local open spaces and local authorities, closed the car parks in March. Since May 13th the car parks have been re-opened. Please take great care to respect the social distancing rules. With Heather Farm tenants shut down and therefore our income impacted we have unfortunately furloughed Senior Ranger Rachel. We have also taken a decision to postpone our AGM from June to September. We will update you when guidance is clear. We have recently marked significant anniversaries within the Society, our trustees and staff. Read more along with other updates in this issue. We look forward to businesses restarting at Heather Farm and general access returning when conditions allow. Stay well and keep safe!
