Tree to 25 m tall, sometimes flowering and fruiting as a small tree around 6 m, trunk fluted, bark non- descript, smooth, mid grey. Young stems and buds with fine appressed hairs, stems becoming hairless. Leaves New growth red. Leaves alternate, pinnately compound. Stipules absent. Petioles 1-3 cm long. Leaflets 2-6, alternate, subopposite or opposite, terminal leaflet absent, rachis projecting beyond last leaflet. Petiolules 2- 4 mm long, with a prominent pulvinus at base. Leaflet blades obovate to elliptic to narrow-elliptic, usually 3-9 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, base attenuate or cuneate, margins entire, apex acute or obtuse with a mucro. Female flowers. Flowers Inflorescences axillary, paniculate. Flowers functionally unisexual, monoecious, 5-merous, slightly zygomorphic, c. 4 mm diam. Calyx 5-lobed, connate at base, 1-2.5 mm long and wide, lobes unequal, green. Petals 5, free, petals subobovate-elliptic with slender claw, each petal with 2 hairy yellow scales about as long as or longer than petals. Male flowers with usually 8 strongly exserted stamens (anthers pink) and a rudimentary ovary; female flowers with usually 8 staminodes and a 3-locular superior ovary. Disc complete Male flowers. In July 2013, a total of 86 full floristic and 105 rapid floristic sites were sampled across the island, based on a stratified random sampling design. A hierarchical agglomerative clustering strategy (Flexible UPGMA) and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity coefficient with default beta, along with nearest neighbour analysis to identify anomalous site allocations, was used to analyze the floristic data. In total 33 vegetation communities were delineated and mapped: 19 mapping units from the full floristic analysis; 7 variants identified within five of the above 19 groups; 3 mapping units from analysis of canopy- only floristic data; and 4 mapping units recognised in previous studies that are mapped but were not sampled in this survey.

This paper reviews the biogeography and ecology of the family Meliaceae and maps many of the clades. Recently published molecular phylogenies are used as a framework to interpret distributional and ecological data. The sections on distribution concentrate on allopatry, on areas of overlap among clades, and on centres of diversity. The sections on ecology focus on populations of the family that are not in typical, dry-ground, lowland rain forest, for example, in and around mangrove forest, in peat swamp and other kinds of freshwater swamp forest, on limestone, and in open vegetation such as savanna woodland. Information on the altitudinal range of the genera is presented, and brief notes on architecture are also given. The paper considers the relationship between the distribution and ecology of the taxa, and the interpretation of the fossil record of the family, along with its significance for biogeographic studies. Finally, the paper discusses whether the evolution of Meliaceae can be attributed to ‘radiations’ from restricted centres of origin into new morphological, geographical and ecological space, or whether it is better explained by phases of vicariance in widespread ancestors, alternating with phases of range expansion. Australian subtropical rainforests and plant populations have become increasingly fragmented since European settlement. Managing relict populations and remnants within the landscape matrix is dependent upon our understanding of plant reproductive biology. The incidence of autogamous self-compatibility and dioecy was investigated in subtropical rainforests, near Taree, in the Manning Valley (northern New South Wales). The proportion of dioecious species in rainforests of the region is high (~17%), but varies among sites. The potential for hermaphroditic species to self-pollinate was examined by bagging inflorescences in the field. Of the > 30 species (in 14 families) studied, nine species exhibited high levels of self- compatibility. These were predominantly pioneer and edge species, but other pioneer species were self-incompatible. Different behaviour occurred within families. Twenty species (in 13 families) regenerated from basal coppice or root suckers following bushfire. The significance of knowledge of reproductive biology for management is discussed. Introduction Many tropical and subtropical trees and shrubs are characterised by wide geographical distributions, but at individual sites species often have low population densities. During the Tertiary subtropical rainforest was very extensive in Australia (Adam 1992). In recent geological time its distribution has become limited and fragmented, as much of Australia became arid, with fluctuations in extent driven by climatic change during glacial-interglacial cycles.

Plant Formations in the Lord Howean BioProvince Peter Martin Rhind Lord Howean Lowland Rain Forest These forests are generally characterized by the endemic Ficus columnaris (Moraceae) and Howea forsteriana (Arecaceae), while other large endemic trees include Guioa coriacea (Sapindaceae), and the endemic Pandanus forsteri (Pandanaceae) is frequent in gullies. Smaller endemic trees include Coprosma putida (Rubiaceae), Dysoxylum pachyphyllum (Meliaceae), Geniostoma petiolosum (Loganiaceae), Psychotria carronis (Rubiaceae) and Randia stipulosa (Rubiaceae), and the ancient Bubbia howeana (Winteraceae), Lianas are very common with the largest of these remarkable plants including Lyonsia reticulata and Marsdenia rostrata, but epiphytes such as the endemic epiphytic orchid Dendrobium moorei (Orchidaceae) are scarce. The undergrowth is composed of a variety of species including the endemic Exocarpus homaloclada (Santalaceae), Senecio insularis (Asteraceae) and the endemic fern Asplenium milnei (Aspleniaceae). Small trees, such as the endemic Celtis amblyphylla (Cannabaceae) and Rapanea platystigma (Myrsinaceae) dominate the exposed outer edges of the forest. Also in the lowland rain forest are two endangered Red Data Book species. These are Marrattia salicina (horseshoe fern), which is an endemic sub-species, confined to certain ledges and terraces, and Passiflora herbertiana subsp. insulae-howei (Lord Howe Island passion fruit) another endemic sub-species that grows as a low twiner. Another endemic found in the lowland forest is Sideroxylon howeanum (Sapotaceae). Lord Howean Hill Forest The endemic Acicalyptus fullagari (Myrtaceae) and Howea belmoreana (Arecaceae) are two of the main characteristic trees of these forests. Other endemic trees include Guioa coriacea (Sapindaceae) and Notelaea quadristaminea (Oleaceae) but most of the smaller trees found here such as Bubbia howeana are also found in the lowland forest.
