Many renowned MTI authors, their estates and rightsholders are contributing songs from their iconic musicals to the revue including Stephen Schwartz; Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty; Cameron Mackintosh; Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg & Herbert Kretzmer; Disney Theatrical Group; Frank Loesser; Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe; Tim Minchin; Jonathan Larson; Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman; Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley; Leslie Bricusse & Frank Wildhorn; Charles Strouse & Martin Charnin; Marcy Heisler & Zina Goldrich; and many more to be announced. See below for Tuition Policy. We intend to practice and perform in person. If restrictions become insurmountable, contingency plans include but are not limited to private and small group rehearsal, and a live stream or filmed (scheduled content stream) performance. Due to the amount of material covered each week in rehearsal, absence is discouraged. If a student misses a rehearsal, they may not be placed in the material covered that week at the director’s discretion. Absence during auditions, dress/tech rehearsals and performances is not permitted. Registration opens August 1. Please visit www.jeterbackyardtheater.com to register. You will receive an email confirming your place in class. Tuition is due within ten days of registration or your spot will be forfeited. TUITION POLICY: Withdrawals, transfers, and cancellations following registration will incur a $25 administrative fee, regardless of the circumstance related to the withdrawal, transfer, or cancellation: other charges may apply depending on when the withdrawal occurs. If the withdrawal/transfer takes place one or more weeks prior to the first day of JBT classes that semester a full refund will be issued, minus the $25 administrative fee. If less than one week’s notice is offered, no refund will be given. .

The South African who wrote the English lyrics for ‘Les Miserables’ talks to Marianne Gray in London HERBERT Kretzmer has very little to be miserable about. Apart from living a fascinating life, which started in Kroonstad then went via Paris and New York to London, he also wrote the English lyrics for Les Miserables, the world’s longest-running musical, which is now coming out as an all-star film. For the film, he has written the lyrics for an additional song, Suddenly, which has been nominated for an Oscar as Best Original Song. We meet in his elegant townhouse in Kensington, London, to talk about the film of the musical which is based on Victor Hugo’s novel set in 19th-century France. The musical has been running worldwide for 27 years, has been seen by 60 million people and shows no signs of flagging. The film stars two Australian leading men —Russell Crowe as the relentless Inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman as the hunted ex convict Jean Valjean — and the gorgeous Anne Hathaway as the hapless Fantine, mother of Cosette, who sells her hair to raise money. Hathaway actually had her beautiful long hair shorn to the scalp during one of the movie’s possibly most emotional sequences. Kretzmer only went on set twice during the shoot. He says he is now a “spare wheel”. “Nobody wants a writer round once his work is done,” he laughs. “He’s just being a tourist.” At 87, and with an OBE (Order of the British Empire), a chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University (which he dropped out of when a student), he still is totally on the ball as he chats, in a soft South African accent, about his extraordinary life.

An Afternoon on Broadway Marks the Beginning of the Band’S 33Rd Season
Purpose and History The Community Band of Brevard exists to educate its members, to entertain its audiences, and to serve its community. Our musical director is Mr. Marion Scott. Mr. Scott formed the Band in 1985 to provide a performance outlet for adult musicians in the area. Our membership, currently numbering about 80, includes people of all ages representing many occupations. Most of our concerts have a specific theme upon which the music focuses. Those themes have often led us to include exceedingly difficult works, which we willingly do, and to include special guest artists. The Band gives several concerts throughout the year. Our concerts include many diverse musical genres, composers, and often previously unpublished works for band. Each program is planned to please a variety of musical tastes. A Few Words About the Rest of the Program: Tonight/Somewhere from West Side Story Words by Stephen Sondheim/ Music by Leonard Bernstein/arr. Terry Winch & Bob Krogstad Set as a mid-century, urban Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story explores the rivalry between two New York street gangs and the forbidden romance that blossoms in spite of it. Bernstein wrote the work in 1957 and it was nominated for 6 Tony Awards that year. If not for The Music Man, it might have won them all. This is the Moment from Jekyll & Hyde Words by Leslie Bricusse/Music by Frank Wildhorn/arr. Bob Krogstad The musical version of the legend of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was premiered in 1997. Frank Wildhorn composed the score and the book was taken from the original Robert Louis Stevenson by Leslie Bricusse. “This is the Moment” comes at the crucial point in the story when Dr. Jekyll is about to test the fateful formula on himself. Into the Fire from The Scarlet Pimpernel Words by Nan Knighthorn/Music by Frank Wildhorn/arr. JAC Redford Also from the pen of Frank Wildhorn and also from the year 1997, The Scarlet Pimpernel depicts the Reign of Terror and the French Revolution. “Into the Fire” comes early in Act I when Percy, Armand and others make plans to rescue some of the doomed aristocrats from the guillotine. Bob Krogstad Quest for Camelot was an animated feature film from 1998 which was based on the Arthurian novel by Vera Chapman called The King’s Damosel.

By foregrounding the role of the audience in creating meaning and by minimizing the “show” as a coherent work, I reconnect musicals to their roots in comedy by way of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of carnival and reduced laughter. The audiences I study are kids, queers, and collectors, an alliterative set of people whose gender identities and expressions all depart from or fall outside of the normative binary.
