The Secret Rituals of the O.T.O. Edited and Introduced by FRANCIS KING Front dustjacket The Secret Rituals of the O.T.O. Edited and Introduced by FRANCIS KING In recent years there has been a remarkable resurgence of interest in what is generally referred to as the 'Occult'. Popular Sun-sign astrology has become a subject for cocktail party chatter; the 'Underground press' displays an intensive, although often ill- informed, interest in such subjects as Glastonbury, Ley Hunting, and Flying Saucers; and books — many of them owing what little merit they possess to the skillful employment of scissors and paste — on all aspects of occultism pour from all the presses. In the shadow of such well-publicised aspects of the Occult revival can be dimly discerned the shape of an altogether more important phenomenon — nothing less than the rebirth of Magic. Magic, that is, in the sense that it is defined by the extraordinary occultist Dion Fortune: 'The science and art of causing changes in consciousness in accordance with will.' There is no doubt that the magical techniques, for which extraordinary efficacy is claimed, are almost exclusively derived (although sometimes indirectly) from those two extraordinary occult sodalities the Hermetic Order of the Golden Front dustjacket Dawn and the Ordo Templi Orientis. The rites and secret instructions of the former organisation are easily available in Dr, Francis Regardie's Golden Dawn, a work which only now, thirty-five years after its first publication, is beginning to receive the appreciation it so undoubtedly deserves. Those of the latter, the Ordo Templi Orientis, have hitherto never been published, although grossly inaccurate and incomplete typescript versions of them have occasionally been sold for high prices. Now, at last, this volume makes available to the occult student not only the symbolic- masonic riches of the initiate on rituals pf file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Michael/...Secret%20Rituals%20of%20the%20O.T.O/index.html (1 of 2) [12/28/2001 2:00:55 PM] Front dustjacket the O.T.O. but the secret magical instructions of the Order's seventh, eighth and ninth degrees, the full details of the techniques from which such occultists as Theodor Reuss and Aleister Crowley derived their mystic powers. PART ONE The Birth and Development of the O.T.O. * CHAPTER ONE The Manifesto of 1917 In the spring of 1917 the Russian people, worn out by almost three years of their rulers’ political and military incompetence, overthrew their Czar and installed a Provisional Government. At about the same time the U.S.A. entered the war on the allied side. Neither of these events greatly excited the inhabitants of Henri Oedenkoven’s and Ida Hoffmann’s eccentric vegetarian community situated at Ascona in Switzerland. They were far more interested in a bombastic encyclical just promulgated by Theodor Reuss, a temporary guest of the community. ‘Let it be known’, began this manifesto, ‘that there exists, unknown to the great crowd, a very ancient Order of sages, whose object is the amelioration and spiritual evolution of mankind by means of conquering error and aiding men and women in their efforts of attaining the power of recognizing the truth. This Order has existed already in the most remote times and it has manifested its activity secretly and openly in the world under different names and in various forms: it has caused social and political revolutions and proved to be the rock of salvation in times of danger and misfortune. It has always upheld the banner of freedom against tyranny in whatever shape this appeared, whether as clerical or political or social despotism or oppression of any kind. ‘To this “secret order” every wise and spiritually enlightened person belongs by right of his or her nature: because they all, even if they are personally unknown to each other, are one in their purpose and object and they all work under the guidance of the one light of truth. Into this Sacred Society no one can be admitted by another unless he has the power to enter it himself by virtue of his own interior Illumination neither can anyone after he has once entered be expelled unless he should expel himself by becoming unfaithful to his principles and forget again the truths which he has learned by his own experience. ‘All this is known to every enlightened person. ‘But it is known only to few that there exists also an external, visible organization of such men and women, who having themselves found the path to real self-knowledge, and who having travelled the burning sands, are willing to give to others, desirous of entering that path, the benefit of their experience, and to act as spiritual guides to those who are willing to be guided. file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Michael/...0Secret%20Rituals%20of%20the%20O.T.O/p1c1.html (1 of 4) [12/28/2001 2:01:15 PM] The Secret Rituals of the O.T.O. ‘While numberless societies, associations, orders, groups, etc., have been founded during the last thirty years in all parts of the civilized world, all following some line of occult study, yet there is but ONE ancient organization of genuine Mystics which shows to the seeker after truth a Royal Road to discover the Lost Mysteries of Antiquity and to the Unveiling of the One Hermetic Truth. ‘This organization is known at the present times (sic) as the: Ancient Order of Oriental Templars Ordo Templi Orientis Otherwise: The Hermetic Brotherhood of Light ‘It is a Modern School of Magic. And, like the ancient schools of magic, it derived its knowledge from the East. This knowledge was never revealed to the profane, for it gave immense power for either good or evil to its possessors. It was recorded in symbol, parable and allegory, requiring a Key for its interpretation. ‘The symbols and glyphs of Freemasonry were originally also derived from the more ancient mysteries. ‘These symbols of ancient Masonry, of the Rosicrucians, the sacred art of the ancient Chemi (Egyptians), of Homer’s Golden Chain, like those of modern Freemasonry, etc., are however but different aspects of the One Great Mystery. They all require a key to disclose the real underlying meaning. There exists, however, but One Right Key, and moreover this one right key must be used the Right Way. ‘This key can be placed within the reach of all those who are prepared unselfishly to study and work for its possession, if they apply for membership to the Order of Oriental Templars (O.T.O.). ‘The O.T.O. (Ordo Templi Orientis) is a body of Initiates in whose hands are concentrated the secret knowledge of all Oriental Orders and of all existing Masonic Degrees. Its Chiefs are Initiates of the highest rank and recognized as such by all capabel (sic) of such recognition in every country in the world. The Order is international, and has existing connections in every civilized country in the world. Every man or woman who becomes a member of the O.T.O. has an indefeasible right to the first three degrees of Masonry. ‘The O.T.O., although an Academia Masonica, is not a Masonic Body, so far as the craft degrees are concerned in the sense in which that expression is usually understood in England, and therefore in no way conflicts with, or infringes the just privileges of, the United Grand Lodge of England. English Master Masons in good standing, by arrangement, on affiliation, are admitted at reduced charges. Members of the IX° become part-proprietors of the Estates and Goods of the Order. For further information see the publications of the O.T.O., and the synopsis of the degrees of the O.T.O.’ The manifesto goes on to outline the Constitution of the O.T.O.; the rules of membership are file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Michael/...0Secret%20Rituals%20of%20the%20O.T.O/p1c1.html (2 of 4) [12/28/2001 2:01:15 PM] The Secret Rituals of the O.T.O.

Syncrétismes et hérésies dans l’Orient Seldjoukide et Ottoman (XIVe-XVIIIe siècle), Actes du Colloque du Collège de France, Octobre 2001 (Paris: Peeters, 2005) (Collection Turcica, vol. 9), pp. 428, ISBN 904 2 915 49 8. Various aspects of the question of religious syncretism in the Middle East have repeatedly been the subject of research. Seen from an ‘orientalist’ and idealistic point of view, this question has been dealt with by national historiographies in a predictably justifi catory fashion. Moreover, after the end of the Cold War era, it resurfaced, integrated into wider questions such as that of the politicisa- tion of religion or that of the emergence of “ethnic-identities”, an issue which has recently engulfed the institutions of the European Union. In the current enfl amed situation, the historian has diffi culty in detaching himself/herself from the crucial present debate on religion/culture and confl icts (dictated as an almost exclusive approach and topic of research according to the lines of the ‘clash of civilizations’ theory). Often encountering retrospective and anachronistic interpretations, (s)he needs to revisit, among other issues, the question of the religious orthodoxies and of the deviances from them. Th e collective work presented here is, in short, an attempt to explore respective phenomena in their own historical terms. Th e participants at the Colloque of the Collège de France in October 2001 developed new analyses and proposed responses to an historical phenomenon which is linked in various ways to cur- rent political-ideological events (Preface by Gilles Veinstein, pp xiii-xiv).

  • QUESTION 39 Schism We Next Have to Consider the Vices That Are Opposed to Peace and That Involve Deeds: Schism (Schisma) (Quest
QUESTION 39 Schism We next have to consider the vices that are opposed to peace and that involve deeds: schism (schisma) (question 39); strife (rixa) (question 41); sedition (seditio) (question 42); and war (bellum) (question 40). On the first topic there are four questions: (1) Is schism a special sin? (2) Is schism a more serious sin than unbelief? (3) Do schismatics have any power? (4) Are schismatics appropriately punished with excommunication? Article 1 Is schism a special sin? It seems that schism is not a special sin: Objection 1: As Pope Pelagius says, “Schism (schisma) sounds like scissor (scissura).” But every sin effects some sort of cutting off—this according to Isaiah 59:2 (“Your sins have cut you off from your God”). Therefore, schism is not a special sin. Objection 2: Schismatics seem to be individuals who do not obey the Church. But a man becomes disobedient to the precepts of the Church through every sin, since sin, according to Ambrose, “is disobedience with respect to the celestial commandments.” Therefore, every sin is an instance of schism. Objection 3: Heresy likewise cuts a man off from the unity of the Faith. Therefore, if the name ‘schism’ implies being cut off, then schism does not seem to differ as a special sin from the sin of unbelief. But contrary to this: In Contra Faustum Augustine distinguishes schism from heresy as follows: “Schism is believing the same things as the others and worshiping with the same rites, but being content merely to split the congregation, whereas heresy is believing things that are diverse from what the Catholic Church believes.” Therefore, schism is not a general sin.

  • The Legacy of an Anticolonial Religious Leader in Today’S Vietnam
Kyoto University A Posthumous Return from Exile: The Legacy of an Anticolonial Religious Leader in Today’s Vietnam Janet Hoskins* The 2006 return of the body Phạm Công Tắc, one of the founding spirit mediums of Caodaism and its most famous 20th century leader, re-awakened controversies about his life and legacy among Caodaists both in Vietnam and in the diaspora. This paper argues that his most important contribution lay in formulating a utopian project to support the struggle for independence by providing a religiously based repertoire of concepts to imagine national autonomy, and a separate apparatus of power to achieve it. Rather than stressing Tắc’s political actions, which have been well documented in earlier studies (Blagov 2001; Bernard Fall 1955; Werner 1976), I focus instead on a reading of his sermons, his séance transcripts and commentaries, histories published both in Vietnam and in the diaspora, and conversations with Caodaists in several countries when the appropriateness of returning his body was being debated. Keywords: Vietnamese religion, anti-colonial struggle, diaspora, postcolonial theory On November 1, 2006, excited crowds in Tây Ninh gathered in front of the huge central gate to their sacred city, which had not been opened for half a century. The large octag- onal tomb on the way to the Great Temple had been built for Phạm Công Tắc, Caodaism’s most famous and controversial 20th century leader, and planned as his final resting place, but it had sat empty for decades. Now, news had come that the gate would be opened on this day to receive a funeral procession coming from Cambodia, bearing his remains in a dragon shaped carriage, where his body would be welcomed, celebrated with a full night of prayers and chanting, and then finally laid to rest.

  • The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley's Thelema, 1919
Aries – Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism 21 (2021) 69–93 ARIES brill.com/arie Proximal Authority The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley’s Thelema, 1919–1930 Manon Hedenborg White Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden [email protected] Abstract In 1920, the Swiss-American music teacher and occultist Leah Hirsig (1883–1975) was appointed ‘Scarlet Woman’ by the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), founder of the religion Thelema. In this role, Hirsig was Crowley’s right-hand woman during a formative period in the Thelemic movement, but her position shifted when Crowley found a new Scarlet Woman in 1924. Hirsig’s importance in Thelema gradually declined, and she distanced herself from the movement in the late 1920s. The article analyses Hirsig’s changing status in Thelema 1919–1930, proposing the term proximal authority as an auxiliary category to MaxWeber’s tripartite typology.Proximal authority is defined as authority ascribed to or enacted by a person based on their real or per- ceived relational closeness to a leader. The article briefly draws on two parallel cases so as to demonstrate the broader applicability of the term in highlighting how relational closeness to a leadership figure can entail considerable yet precarious power. Keywords Aleister Crowley – Leah Hirsig – Max Weber – proximal authority – Thelema 1 Introduction During the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665–1714), Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (1660–1744), was the second most powerful woman in the kingdom. As the queen’s favourite, the Duchess overcame many restrictions hampering women of the time.

There was a time when I thought that the Yooropean Yahoodim Tetragrammaton ( = YHWH ) that was and is presented to the world was genuine, but after further study and review I realized that it was false. I have come to understand that the Jetthiopian Paleo- Tetragrammaton ( yhwh =JEWE) that was discovered on the Mesha Stele or the Moabite Stone around 1869 AD was in fact the original one, and it was not just four letters that you add other letters too to compose the Orijahnator’s name, but it was in fact the full name of the Orijewnator’s name which is JEWE . The final letter in the name can be silent at times therefore leaving the root word ‘ JEW,’ and this full name can be compounded with other words to give different meanings such as, ‘JEW-EL ’ ( Jew is mighty) or ‘JEW-O-SHA-WAH ,’ ( Jew is Salvation ) etc. With the ‘ E’s’ interchangeable with ‘ A’s’ in the name it can be rendered JAWE or JAWA and with the silent ‘H’ added we get JAHWEH and JAHWAH and with ‘OSHA ’ added we get JAHOSHAWEH or JAHOSHAWAH and with ‘ L’ added to the name ‘JEWE’ we get the name ‘JEWEL’ and is not the Orijewnator a precious JEWEL ? • New Religious Movements
New Religious Movements New Religious Movements: Challenge and response is a searching and wide-ranging collection of essays on the contemporary phenomenon of new religions. The contributors to this volume are all established specialists in the sociology, theology, law, or the history of new minority movements. The primary focus is the response of the basic institutions of society to the challenge which new religious movements represent. The orientation of this volume is to examine the way in which new movements in general have affected modern society in areas such as economic organisation; the operation of the law; the role of the media; the relationship of so-called ‘cult’ membership to mental health; and the part which women have played in leading or supporting new movements. Specific instances of these relationships are illustrated by reference to many of the most prominent new religions – Hare Krishna, The Brahma Kumaris, The Unification Church, The Jesus Army, The Family’, The Church of Scientology, and Wicca. For students of religion or sociology, New Religious Movements is an invaluable source of information, an example of penetrating analysis, and a series of thought-provoking contributions to a debate which affects many areas of contemporary life in many parts of the world. Introduction The East-West Schism (also known as the Great Schism) resulted in the division of Christianity into Eastern (Greek) and Western (Latin) branches. The mutual excommunications in 1054 marked the climax to a long period of tension between the two streams of Christianity and resulted from, amongst other things, cultural, linguistic, political and theological differences that had built up over time. Here we examine a number of these differences and their ultimate culmination in dividing East from West. 2. Greek and Latin Cultural Differences In his work 'Turning Points', Noll argues that “As early as the first century, it was possible to perceive pointed differences between the representatives of what would one day be called East and West.” 1 The Eastern Orthodox theologian Timothy Ware expands on this: From the start, Greeks and Latins had each approached the Christian mystery in their own way. At the risk of some oversimplification, it can be said that the Latin approach was more practical, the Greek more speculative; Latin thought was influenced by judicial ideas...while the Greeks understood theology in the context of worship and in the light of the Holy Liturgy..
