anDrás kornai Realizing Monads ABSTrACT We reconstruct monads as cyclic finite state automata whose states are what Leibniz calls perceptions and whose transitions are automatically triggered by the next time tick he calls entelechy. This goes some way toward explaining key as- pects of the Monadology, in particular, the lack of inputs and outputs (§7) and the need for universal harmony (§59). 1. INTrODUCTION Monads are important both in category theory and in programming language de- sign, clearly demonstrating that Leibniz is greatly appreciated as the conceptual forerunner of much of abstract thought both in mathematics and in computer sci- ence. Yet we suspect that Leibniz, the engineer, designer of the Stepped reck- oner, would use the resources of the modern world to build a very different kind of monad. Throughout this paper, we confront Leibniz with our contemporary scientific understanding of the world. This is done to make sure that what we say is not “concretely empty” in the sense of Unger (2014). We are not interested in what we can say about Leibniz, but rather in what Leibniz can say about our cur- rent world model. readers expecting some glib demonstration of how our current scientific theories make Leibniz look like a fool will be sorely disappointed. Looking around, and finding a well-built Calculus ratiocinator in Turing ma- chines, pointer machines, and similar abstract models of computation, Leibniz would no doubt consider his Characteristica Universalis well realized in modern proof checkers such as Mizar, Coq, or Agda to the extent mathematical deduc- tion is concerned, but would be somewhat disappointed in their applicability to natural philosophy in general. -

Page 1 of 19 To appear in Synthese Probability and Proximity in Surprise Tomoji Shogenji1 Abstract This paper proposes an analysis of surprise formulated in terms of proximity to the truth, to replace the probabilistic account of surprise. It is common to link surprise to the low (prior) probability of the outcome. The idea seems sensible because an outcome with a low probability is unexpected, and an unexpected outcome often surprises us. However, the link between surprise and low probability is known to break down in some cases. There have been some attempts to modify the probabilistic account to deal with these cases, but they are still faced with problems. The new analysis of surprise I propose turns to accuracy (proximity to the truth) and identifies an unexpected degree of inaccuracy as reason for surprise. The shift from probability to proximity allows us to solve puzzles that strain the probabilistic account of surprise. Mind Body Problem and Brandom's Analytic Pragmatism
The Mind-Body Problem and Brandom’s Analytic Pragmatism François-Igor Pris [email protected] Erfurt University (Nordhäuserstraße 63, 99089 Erfurt, Germany) Abstract. I propose to solve the hard problem in the philosophy of mind by means of Brandom‟s notion of the pragmatically mediated semantic relation. The explanatory gap between a phenomenal concept and the corresponding theoretical concept is a gap in the pragmatically mediated semantic relation between them. It is closed if we do not neglect the pragmatics. 1 Introduction In the second section, I will formulate the hard problem. In the third section, I will describe a pragmatic approach to the problem and propose to replace the classical non-normative physicalism/naturalism with a normative physicalism/naturalism of Wittgensteinian language games. In subsection 3.1, I will give a definition of a normative naturalism. In subsection 3.2, I will make some suggestions concerning an analytic interpretation of the second philosophy of Wittgenstein. In the fourth section, I will propose a solution to the hard problem within Brandom‟s analytic pragmatism by using the notion of the pragmatically mediated semantic relation. In the fifth section, I will make some suggestions about possible combinatorics related to pragmatically mediated semantic relations. In the sixth section, I will consider pragmatic and discursive versions of the mind-body identity M=B. In the last section, I will conclude that the explanatory gap is a gap in a pragmatically mediated semantic relation between B and M. THREE ARGUMENTS TO THINK THAT FAITH DOES NOT ENTAIL BELIEF BY DANIEL HOWARD-SNYDER Abstract: On doxastic theories of propositional faith, necessarily, S has faith that p only if S believes that p. On nondoxastic theories of propositional faith, it’sfalse that, necessarily, S has faith that p only if S believes that p. In this article, I defend three arguments for nondoxastic theories of faith and I respond to published crit- icisms of them. 1. Introduction Pistology is on the rise. The study of the nature and value of faith was once the domain of biblical scholars, theologians, and the occasional philosopher of religion. Not anymore. Epistemologists, moral psychologists, and classicists, along with many philosophers of religion, have gotten into the act, in no small part because faith has become more readily seen as a widespread human phenomenon, rather than just a religious one, something at the center of human flourishing, not just religious flourishing – aviewthe ancient Greeks and Romans held, a view in recovery today (Morgan, 2015; Preston-Roedder, 2018; Tsai, 2017). This renewed scholarly interest in faith thought of as a psychological atti- tude, state, orientation, or trait that can have secular contents or objects, not just religious ones, parallels recent social trends. One example: in his farewell speech, Barack Obama uses the faith lexicon seven times, but only once with religious content. He speaks of ‘faith in reason and enterprise, and the pri- macy of right over might,’ of ‘faith in America and in Americans,’ of ‘faith … in the power of ordinary Americans to bring about change,’ and the like. -

PHI 110 Lecture 2 1 Welcome to our second lecture on personhood and identity. We’re going to begin today what will be two lectures on Rene Descartes’ thoughts on this subject. The position that is attributed to him is known as mind/body dualism. Sometimes it’s simply called the dualism for short. We need to be careful, however, because the word dualism covers a number of different philosophical positions, not always dualisms of mind and body. In other words, there are other forms of dualism that historically have been expressed. And so I will refer to his position as mind/body dualism or as Cartesian dualism as it’s sometimes also called. I said last time that Descartes is not going to talk primarily about persons. He’s going to talk about minds as opposed to bodies. But I think that as we start getting into his view, you will see where his notion of personhood arises. Clearly, Descartes is going to identify the person, the self, with the mind as opposed to with the body. This is something that I hoped you picked up in your reading and certainly that you will pick up once you read the material again after the lecture. Since I’ve already introduced Descartes’ position, let’s define it and then I’ll say a few things about Descartes himself to give you a little bit of a sense of the man and of his times. The position mind/body that’s known as mind/body dualism is defined as follows: It’s the view that the body is a physical substance — a machine, if you will — while the mind is a non-physical thinking entity which inhabits the body and is responsible for its voluntary movements. -

Leibniz’s Ultimate Theory Soshichi Uchii Abstract This is a short summary of my new interpretation of Leibniz’s philosophy, including metaphysics and dynamics. Monadology is the core of his philosophy, but according to my interpretation, this document must be read together with his works on dynamics and geometry Analysis Situs, among others. Monadology describes the reality, the world of monads. But in addition, it also contains a theory of information in terms of the state transition of monads, together with a sketch of how that information is transformed into the phenomena via coding. I will argue that Leibniz’s program has a surprisingly wide range, from classical physics to the theories of relativity (special and general) , and extending even to quantum mechanics. 1. How should we read Monadology? Among Leibniz’s papers he completed in his last years, the one that should be regarded as containing the core of his system of knowledge is Monadology (1714). It is a theory of metaphysics, but I take it that Leibniz thought that it is the foundation of dynamics, and he envisaged that dynamics should be combined with his new geometry, called Analysis Situs. There are two firm grounds for the preceding assertion. The first is that Leibniz sketched the relationship between his metaphysics and dynamics, in the two papers New System and Specimen Dynamicum (both published in 1695; English tr. in Ariew and Garber 1989). If we wish to figure out a reasonable interpretation of Monadology, this ground must be taken very seriously. INTRODUCTION Logicians, philosophers and to judge from the Internet even the general public are vaguely aware that Leibniz held views about logic that anticipate modern ideas of proof system and algorithm. Though there are many places in Leibniz’ works that might be cited as evidence for such claims, popular works cite virtually only two of Leibniz’ shorter papers, Characteristica universalis and De arte combinatoria. Curiously, though there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of references to these papers, nothing serious has been written in recent decades about the papers themselves that could be called a professional exegesis or discussion of their logical content. The purpose of this short paper is to remedy that lack by offering a “reconstruction” of the system Leibniz sketches in De arte combinatoria, which of the two essays is the one more focused on the notions of proof and algorithm. A point of caution about method should be made at the outset. Any modern “reconstruction” of views in the history of logic is by its nature a compromise. It is an attempt to preserve as much of the original content, including its terminology and formulas, as is possible while simultaneously meeting the standards of modern metatheory. For example, if it is possible to do justice to the original by observing standard formats, then they should be Page 2 followed. For example, if it is fair to the text, it is desirable to define the syntax inductively, state definitions set theoretically, develop notions of proof within an axiom or natural deduction system, and define semantic ideas in a recursive manner parallel to syntax. -

University at Buffalo Department of Philosophy Nousletter Interview with Jorge Gracia Jorge Gracia is a polymath. He works in metaphysics/ontology, philosophical historiography, philosophy of language/hermeneutics, ethnicity/race/nationality issues, Hispanic/Latino issues, medieval/scholastic philosophy, Cuban and Argentinian art, and Borges. Gracia’s earliest work was in medieval philosophy. His more than three decades of contributions to medieval philosophy were recently recognized by his being named the winner of the most prestigious award in the field in 2011, the American Catholic Philosophical Association’s Aquinas Medal. That put him in the ranks of Jacques Maritain, Etienne Gilson, Bernard Lonergan, Joseph Owens, G. E. M. Anscombe, Peter Geach, Michael Dummett, John Finnis, Brian Davies, Anthony Kenny, Alisdair McIntyre and one Pope, Karol Wojtyla, and now one saint. Even after Gracia redirected some of his intellectual energies into other branches of philosophy, UB was still being ranked by the Philosophical Gourmet Report (PGR) as one of the best schools in medieval philosophy: 13th in 2006 and in the 15-20 range in 2008. If there were PGR rankings for Latin American philosophy or the philosophy of race and ethnicity, Jorge Gracia’s work would have enabled us to be highly ranked in those fields, higher, I suspect, than UB is in any other philosophical specialization. In the 2010 Blackwell Companion to Latin American Philosophy, Gracia was listed as one of the 40 most important figures in Latin American philosophy since the year 1500! Gracia is also one of the leaders in the emerging field of the philosophy of race and ethnicity.
