With tremendous growth and expansion, prospects of mass media are today viewed as more powerful than ever before. Media has created its own world of glamour, gossip, sex and sensation, that has played a major role in distracting attention from the real issues of our times. Former Chief Vigilance Commissioner N. Vittal in his article in Bhavan's journal June 30, "Journalism is losing……" has indicated that special problem faced by journalists these days relates to journalism itself. The page 3 culture can make people live in a make-believe world and as a result, instead of journalism connecting people, it may result in the people losing touch with reality being connected through the media.

Sathyavarshini MA in English with Communication Studies, Christ Deemed to be University, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. ABSTRACT In a country like India, where people are prominently dark-skinned, people are still obsessed with fair skin. The movie "Colour photo" addresses casual racism in the Indian context. The movie represents the typical neo-colonialistic scenario of how a couple of different skin colours are mocked and jibed. This research will be focusing on how the inferiority complex of dark skin implanted during the colonisation affects the colonised people by altering the ontological perspectives on understanding superior-inferior relationships between groups. The colonisation effect presented by Fanon as "alienation of black man" will be compared to the protagonist of the movie- Jayakrisha. The research will look at the depiction of standardisation of Eurocentric appearances intersecting with the Indian caste system in the movie colour photo. Consequently, the paper will look at breaking down the belief that "fairness is beauty" as a benchmark for perpetuating identity in the name of beauty. Keywords- neocolonisation, colour photo, whiteness, caste. In a non-white country like India, many are obsessed with white skin. Having a lighter skin tone or darker skin tone is often associated with the colonisation history. In India racism is exacerbated with casteism. It is often assumed that lower caste people are dark in colour and upper caste people have lighter skin tones. The race factors in a colonial minded society have overvalued fairness and thereby undervalued the condition of caste.

    Journal of Media and Communication Studies Vol. 3(4), pp. 131-143, April 2011 Available online http://www.academicjournals.org/jmcs ISSN 2141 – 2545 ©2011 Academic Journals Full Length Research Paper A comparative analysis of nutrition science coverage by popular Indian daily newspapers Mekam Maheshwar* and Raghunatha D. Rao Division of Extension and Training, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, AP, India. Accepted 4 April, 2011 This study assesses the coverage of nutrition related topics by leading English and Telugu language newspapers in India for six months and comparatively analyzes number of articles, visuals and priority in space allocation. Nutrition reports were classified into 16 sub-topics based on the commonness of their content including natural foods, obesity, fruits and vegetables, animal food and beverages. English dailies gave more coverage on obesity, beverages, chocolates, whereas Telugu dailies confined mostly to the traditional foods, promoting consumption of natural foods. Comparatively English dailies published more reports in editorial pages, front pages and as box items to grab readers’ attention significantly (P<0.01) than Telugu dailies. Descriptive analysis method was used as parameters for grading the articles. Reliability of agreement between multiple-raters was analyzed by applying Cohen’s kappa test. Few reports on nutrition found to be relied on unauthentic source of information. Two English dailies were observed as over-emphasized few research findings. To avoid publishing of under or over-emphasis of nutrition related topics in print media, there is a need for synergetic efforts between journalists and scientists in the field of diet and nutrition sciences.
