SURFACE WATER SUPPLY OF LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER BASIN, 1924 AUTHORIZATION AND SCOPE OF WORK This volume is one of a series of 14 reports presenting results of measurements of flow made on streams in the United States during the year ending September 30, 1924. The data presented in these reports were collected by the United States Geological Survey under the following authority contained in the organic law (20 Stat. L., p. 394): Provided, That this officer [the Director] shall have the direction of the Geologi cal Survey and the classification of public lands and examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of the national domain. The work was begun in 1888 in connection with special studies relating to irrigation in the arid West. Since the fiscal year ending June 30, 1895, successive appropriation bills passed by Congress have carried the following items: For gaging the streams and determining the water supply of the United States, and for the investigation of underground turrents and artesian wells, and for the preparation of reports upon the best methods of utilizing the water resources. Annual appropriations for the fiscal years ending June SO, 1895-1925 1895..----.----___.__________________ $12, 500. 00 1896 ___-__--_-___------------_-____-_-_____ »24, 500. 00 1897 to 1899, inclusive--------------.------------ 50, 000. 00 1900..._....._......_...._-.- _--_...--._.----_ 2 70,000.00 1901 to 1902, inclusive-._____--____________ 100, 000. 00 1903 to 1906, inclusive--------------.-.---------- 200, 000. 00 1907___.____________________ _ ________________ 150,000.00 1908 to 1910, inclusive-.---________________ 100, 000. 00 1911 to 1917, inclusive 150, 000. 00 1918 ------------------_-----_-_-_-----_-_---- 175, 000. 00 1919 _--____---_-_---_---_-_--_---__---_-_--__ 148,244. 10 1920 --------------_----------__-------------- 175,000.00 1921 to 1923, inclusive.-.______..._______ 180, 000. 00 1924 to 1925, inclusive-_-----___-____._.__________ 170, 000. 00 In the execution of the work many private and State organizations have cooperated either by furnishing data or by assisting in collecting data. Acknowledgments for cooperation of the first kind are made in connection with the description of each station affected; coopera tion of the second kind is acknowledged on page 10. Measurements of stream flow have been made at about 4,990 points in the United States and also at many points
