Moderato con rubato Every year in its May concerts the CYS Orchestra features the winners of its Senior Soloist CALIFORNIA YOUTH SYMPHONY Competition. The Competition is held in December and is open to any graduating senior Leo Eylar, Conductor musician. He began studying under Amy Zhang and Helen Wu and Janice Gho – received by being selected for the National Youth Orchestra of the United States. currently studies under Florence Huang. He has won a number of awards and prizes in music competitions including first place awards in the Senior Solo, Ruby Senior Concerto, and Instrumental We are delighted, and incredibly proud, to report that both Janice and Helen have been chosen once again for Intermediate Divisions of the U.S. Open Music Competition. He has also received prizes in the the National Youth Orchestra, which will tour China this summer. Many states do not have a single musician Intermediate and Junior Divisions of the Contra Costa String Competition, the CMTANC Competition, the AFAF Golden Strings of America Competition and the Menuhin Dowling Competition. JANICE GHO began studying the double bass at the age of 13 with Bruce Moyer after many years of playing the piano. This is Janice’s third year in the California Youth Symphony, and her second year as co-principal bassist. In the summer of 2014 Janice was chosen as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA and participated in a coast-to-coast tour of the US in eight different cities with CYS ENSEMBLES WRAP UP OUTSTANDING SEASON. guest artists David Robertson and Gil Shaham. The orchestra performed in many prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Millennium Park, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This year Janice was once The CYS String Ensembles, under the direction of Kati Kyme, and the CYS Wind Ensembles, directed by again selected to be a member of the National Youth Orchestra and will participate in a seven-city tour Rosita Amador, will present their season finale concert at 2pm on Sunday, June 7 in the Smithwick Theatre of China this summer.
