  • Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th.

It is argued here that these concepts are just as applicable to the analysis of historical doctrinal conflicts in Late Antiquity as they are to understanding modern conflicts. In the following, I apply social conflict theory to three conflicts involving the late antique papacy to see what new insights it can proffer. The first is Zosimus's involvement in the dispute over the hierarchy of Gallic bishops at the beginning of the fifth century. The second and longest case-study is Leo I's interven- tion in the Chalcedonian conflict over the natures of Christ. The final brief study is the disputed election of Symmachus at the end of the fifth century. Keywords Christology – Council of Chalcedon – Late antique papacy – Leo I, pope – papal letters – social conflict theory – Symmachus, pope – Zosimus, pope The term “conflict” is usually read as a negative, especially when used in the same phrase as “religious”.

Degree Of the School of Theology and Ministry By: Pierluigi De Lucia, S.J. Directed by: Francine Cardman Second Reader: Francis A. Sullivan, S.J. May 2010 © Copyright by Pierluigi DE LUCIA, S.J. 2010 Abstract The Petrine ministry of the bishops of Rome and relations with the eastern bishops at the time of the first four ecumenical councils are the focus of this thesis. It places the Church in the complex historical context marked by the public recognition of Christianity under Constantine (312) and the great novelty of the close interactions of the emperors with the bishops of the major sees in the period, Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and Constantinople. The study examines the structures of the church (local and regional synods and ecumenical councils) and the roles of bishops and emperors in the ecumenical councils of Nicaea (325), Constantinople I (381), Ephesus (431), and Chalcedon (451), including the “robber” council of 449.

  • (69) January to December,1962
VOLUME LXIX (69) January to December,1962. 1962-1 JOTTINGS In Isa.48:10 we find God saying of Israel, " I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction." This was true of Israel in Egypt. Moses compared Egypt to an iron furnace: "The LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be unto Him a people of inheritance, as at this day" (Deut.4:20). The furnace was hot when Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. The people were in sore affliction when Moses decided to turn his back upon the glory, the wealth and the sin of Egypt and to east in his lot with the people of his race. He thought that they would understand that at his coming to them, God was by his hand giving them deliverance. But the attitude of the Israelite who was smiting his fellow changed Moses' view. His brethren were in no wise ready to leave the land of bondage and to accept Moses as their prince and deliverer. He was met with the question of the offender, " Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? thinkest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian?" (Ex.2:14). When Pharaoh heard what Moses had done, he sought to slay him, and Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh to Midian. But Moses' fear of Pharaoh was not the foundational cause of his leaving Egypt. The Spirit, of God through Paul gives us the real reason when He says, " By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king" (Heb.11:27).

  • Concilium Nicaenum I – Excursus on the Number of the Canons
0325-0325 – Concilium Nicaenum I – Excursus on The Number Of The Canons Excursus on The Number Of The Canons this file has been downloaded from http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf214.html NPNF (V2-14) Philip Schaff HEFELE. All the churches did not, however, adopt this practice; for we see in the Acts of the Apostles (xx. 36 and xxi. 5) that St. Paul prayed kneeling during the time between Pentecost and Easter. This canon is found in the Corpus Juris Canonici. Decretum, Pars III, De Conc. Dist. III. c. x. Excursus on the Number of the Nicene Canons. 43 There has come down to us a Latin letter purporting to have been written by St. Athanasius to Pope Marcus. This letter is found in the Benedictine edition of St. Athanasius’s works (ed. Patav. ii. 599) but rejected as spurious by Montfaucon the learned editor. In this letter is contained the marvellous assertion that the Council of Nice at first adopted forty canons, which were in Greek, that it subsequently added twenty Latin canons, and that afterwards the council reassembled and set forth seventy altogether. A tradition that something of the kind had taken place was prevalent in parts of the East, and some collections did contain seventy canons. In the Vatican Library is a MS. which was bought for it by the famous Asseman, from the Coptic Patriarch, John, and which contains not only seventy, but eighty canons attributed to the council of Nice. The MS. is in Arabic, and was discovered by J. B. Romanus, S.
