Hyeon Chung (file pic) The 31-year-old Nadal will be the oldest year-end No. 1 and first season-ending No. 1 over the age of 30 since the Emirates ATP Rankings were established in 1973. It is his fourth time finishing atop the Rankings, adding to 2008, 2010 and 2013. Roger Federer has pushed Nadal all the way in the battle to finish atop the rankings, with both players enjoying remarkable comebacks in 2017. But with Federer forced to withdraw from Paris, Nadal needed just one more win to finish No. 1. “I’m very, very happy for everything,” said Nadal in his on-court interview. “It has been an amazing year. One year ago, for sure I never dreamed about being World No. 1 again at the end of the season. It’s something that means a lot to me. But the season is not over.” It wasn’t plain sailing for Nadal against the 21-year-old Chung, who is due to feature at the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan next week. After breaks were exchanged in the early stages, Nadal then rallied from a 0/40 deficit before breaking Chung to lead 4-2. However, with Nadal serving for the set in the ninth game, his South Korean opponent broke back and levelled at 5-5. The Spaniard eventually got over the line in the first set as he opened up a 0/40 lead on Chung’s serve in the 12th game and clinched it with a forehand winner as the match ticked into the hour mark. After Chung fended off four break points in the fourth game of the second set, Nadal made his move with a break in the ninth game before sealing victory in one hour and 49 minutes. Nadal is looking to win his 31st ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown this week, and third of the season after victories in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. The left-hander is hoping to add Paris to his illustrious collection, after finishing runner-up at the AccorHotels Arena in 2007. ATP2020 Criteria The ATP Award flights travel to the ATP Grand Slam, Masters 1000 and ATP Final matches. To complete the ATP2020 Award, fly to the listed airports from a vUAL hub (not necessarily your assigned hub), arriving between the Arrivals Start Date and the Arrivals End Date. So, for example, arrive in Melbourne YMML between Jan. 19 and Jan. 26. So, even if you're assigned to the Newark hub, you can fly RJAA-YMML to qualify for the award flight (during the specified date window, of course). For Flight#, use your vUAL ID number. For example if you are 277 in the Denver hub, use UAL277 as your Flight# for all ATP flights. You may use Star Alliance liveries for flights originating outside of the United States, e.g., CCA277 coming out of Shanghai. For PIREP Link, go to Pilot Center after your PIREP is approved, right click on the appropriate Flt Number, choose Copy, then paste into the PIREP link cell on this tracking sheet. You do not need to fly to the next tournament airport from the previous tournament airport; other non- ATP flights may be completed between tournaments. However, it was played by Major Walter C. Wingfield, in an hourglass shaped court in 1873 in Great Britain. It seems to have evolved from similar ancient sports like court tennis, squash racquets and badminton. In 1877, the All England Croquet Club held a Tennis championship in a rectangular court with rules similar to that of modern Tennis. It quickly spread to America, Britain, and later to other parts of the world. Davis Cup, an international tennis tournament, was held in 1900 to promote the game all over the world. On March 1st, 1913, International Tennis Federation (ITF), the international governing body of Tennis was established. It formulates rules to be followed by all the players participating in competitions throughout the world. It also sets guidelines, defines the kind of equipment used in the sport, and defines court dimensions. Tennis is a sport played among two players or two pairs of players competing with each other in a rectangular tennis court with fixed boundaries. The two sides of the court are separated with a net. The sport involves shooting a tennis ball towards the other side of the court with a tennis racket. We propose a novel ranking model that combines the Bradley- Terry-Luce probability model with a nonnegative matrix factorization framework to model and uncover the presence of latent variables that influence the performance of top tennis players. We derive an efficient, provably convergent, and numerically stable majorization-minimization- based algorithm to maximize the likelihood of datasets under the pro- posed statistical model. The model is tested on datasets involving the outcomes of matches between 20 top male and female tennis players over 14 major tournaments for men (including the Grand Slams and the ATP Masters 1000) and 16 major tournaments for women over the past 10 years. Our model automatically infers that the surface of the court (e.g., clay or hard court) is a key determinant of the performances of male players, but less so for females. Top players on various surfaces over this longitudinal period are also identified in an objective manner.
