    La représentation historique dans le film burlesque muet Christel Taillibert La représentation historique et le burlesque Par définition, le genre burlesque s’est avant tout inscrit dans la contemporanéité de sa production : si ce type de comédies, dont les caractéristiques ont été définies par Mack Sennett à travers les productions de la Keystone mises en chantier à partir de 1912, a si bien fonctionné auprès du public, c’est parce qu’il était fondamentalement subversif, et permettait aux spectateurs, le plus souvent issus de milieux populaires, de remettre en cause l’ordre établi, de dépasser les limites du respectable. Comme l’écrivait Jean-Jacques Couderc, c’est « tout un public populaire qui voyait se matérialiser sur l’écran ses fantasmes les plus destructeurs, ses pulsions les plus revanchardes, ses rêves les pus délirants : riches dépouillés, bourgeois effondrés, flics inoffensifs, juges impuissants, pasteurs ridicules, jeunes femmes libérées, mais aussi folles cavalcades, courses épiques, envols sans entrave, ascensions stratosphériques, expéditions improbables dans des contrées imaginaires… »1. Le burlesque, en raison même de cette fonction cathartique, s’inscrivait tout naturellement dans le quotidien, mettant en scène des décors et des personnages familiers, ceux de l’Amérique populaire du début du XXe siècle. Le concept même de représentation historique est donc, par nature, antinomique avec le principe fondateur du genre, ce qui explique la rareté des incursions historiques opérées dans le cadre ce type de production, alors que la période cinématographique muette était, au contraire, friande de films historiques en tous genres (mélodrames, films d’aventures, etc.). Pour les besoins de cette recherche, 60 films produits aux Etats-Unis2 au cours de la période muette ont été recensés, et constituent le corpus d’étude, chiffre dérisoire au regard des milliers de courts et longs métrages burlesques réalisés dans ce pays jusqu’à la naissance du parlant.

He will attend a private reception in the Museum Penthouse the evening preceding the tribute, which covers the period from 1915 to 1940, Mr. Roach's most productive years in film, though he continues to be active in television production to this day. Roach, also known for the Topper series, was a rival of the early comedy pio­ neer Mack Sennett, according to William K. Everson, who has assembled this retrospec­ tive. Mr. Everson, an authority on American film who teaches at the New School for Social Research and New York University, has just completed a book on Hal Roach, which the Museum is publishing concurrently with the Roach program. What sustained Roach's productions when the popularity of other comedies, such as Mack Sennett's, began to wane, was the reliance on construction, Everson points out, "Roach's world was serious and orderly...concerning i^tself far more with every­ day nightmares of frustration and embarrassment" than with the "time honored chase" or other standard sight gags.

The results show a large increase in the median shot lengths with the introduction of sound (Mann Whitney U=554.0, Z=-8.33, p= <0.01, PS = 0.0968), estimated to be 2.0s (95% CI: 1.6, 2.4). The dispersion of shot lengths measured using the robust estimator Qn shows a similarly large increase in the dispersion of shot lengths with the transition to sound (Mann Whitney U = 319.0, Z = -9.18, p = <0.01, PS = 0.0557), estimated to be 2.0s (95% CI: 1.7, 2.4).
